Description
Sentiment de Mr. Chirac sur les fièvres intermittentes. Manuscript document in a neat and legible hand, likely that of a scribe. 56pp. (possibly incomplete). N.p., n.d. [late 17th - early 18th century]. 247 x 194 mm., except for last 4 leaves which measure 255 x 180 mm. Unbound. Edges frayed, last 4 leaves with marginal tears and damage affecting several lines of text, some toning and spotting but very good. Contemporary manuscript notes of Chirac's unpublished lectures on intermittent fevers, most likely taken by a student attending Chirac's medical courses at the University of Montpellier. Chirac taught at Montpellier from 1687 to 1708, then relocated to Paris where he enjoyed great success, becoming physician to Philippe d'Orléans and later to Louis XV. He worked to establish an academy of medicine in Paris, one that would draw on the observations and expertise of physicians both in France and abroad, but his plan aroused the professional jealousy of the Faculté de Paris and was abandoned after his death. Chirac published little during his lifetime, so manuscript records such as these provide valuable insight into his teachings and into the medical practices and beliefs of his day. Our manuscript, written in a mixture of French and Latin, is divided into 16 sections discussing various types of intermittent fevers-including the tertian and quartan forms of malaria, hectic fevers, malignant fevers, etc.-and their treatment. .

Description
[Claremont, California]: Scripps College Press [Professor Kitty Maryatt], 2005. First and Limited Edition. Accordion. Near fine. One of 102 copies, folio size, [40] pp., signed by all contributors. Each semester, the students of the Book Arts and Typography Class at Scripps College arrive and work "toward a common goal of creating a cohesive artists' book." This book came about as a result of "a novel approach: various physical and emotional attributes of a major character were suuggested....[a]s individual stories were written about her, with no pre-conceived sequence, our character's personality became clearer and evolved further..." (n.b., from the Prelude, p. [2]). The "story" is enchanting to read, each page with an utterly imaginative presentation: there are doors that open, pop-ups of various shapes and sizes, ribbons, strings and buttons abound to provide tactile interest, and there is even a volvelle. Issued in an edition of 102 copies, as of this writing we see no other copies online; our search of OCLC locates thirty-four institutional holdings. ___DESCRIPTION: Accordion structure between two stiff cardboard covers, these covered with paper painted with black and shades of dark blue, Centaur and Arrighi types on Mohawk Superfine paper, printed by letterpress with pop-ups and a volvelle, images carved from linoleum, some printed with rainbow rolls, four-colour images printed on an HP Indigo digital printer, more colours added via airbrush and pochoir, scattered throughout are brads, buttons, fabric, gringe, ribbon and thread, the work measures 12 1/2" by 6 1/4" with forty printed pages; signed by Katty Maryatt at the Prelude and each of the contributors at the two-page colophon, this copy no. 88 of the 102. ___CONDITION: Perhaps a shade below fine, the boards mostly clean with a few light, stray marks and a few areas of light wear; the interior fine, clean and without wear, with none of the pages creased (as can happen with accordion books), the exterior ribbon circle creased. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
