Description
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1895. FIRST EDITION. Illustrated with 67 drawings by the writer's daughter after the originals by John Tenniel. Publisher’s red cloth, gilt device to front board, gilt lettering to spine (lightly sunned); interior quite nice. First edition of this “new” version of Carroll’s classic tale. Here, adifferent girl, also conveniently named Alice, yearns to visit the Wonderland of her childhood stories, and lo and behold she finds a way. There she meets the Cheshire Cat, has tea with the Mad Hatter, and visits all our old (and some new) friends. Anna Matlack Richards (1835–1900) was a poet, playwright, and author, a Pennsylvania Quaker whose reputation as a poet had been established by the time she was 20. She married William Trost Richards, and both he and their daughter, Anna Richards Brewster, were renowned American artists. A new Alice was “an expanded version of the stories she had invented for her young children, to whom the novel is dedicated, about their favorite storybook world.” A second edition was published in 1896.

New York: Simon and Schuster. Near Fine in Good dj. 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. [good sound copy with minimal shelfwear; the jacket, however, is heavily edgeworn, with bits of paper loss at the supper extremities and the base of the spine]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To Ruth and Sam -- / I hope this will be / a best seller so I can buy / contact lenses for my wife. / Arthur / December 1954." "In this affectionate biography, Arthur Marx gives a penetrating son's-eye view of Groucho in all his nonconformist splendor. This is not an authorized biography. It is, in fact, so unauthorized that the subject has written footnotes in self-defense." Signed by Author .
