Description
first appearance of Moby Dick (MELVILLE, Herman) Harper's New Monthly Magazine. New York: Harper Brothers, June to November 1851 comprising Volume III, issue XVII (October 1851). Containing 8 pages of excerpt from the classic American novel titled: "The Town-Ho's Story"… From The Whale, the title of a new work by Mr. Melville, in the press of Harper & Brothers, and now publishing in London by Mr. Bentley". Tall 4to, 864 pp. lacking 7 leaves, pp 597-610); apparently quite rare in the publisher's decorative gilt-titled cloth (spine strengthened). Of the two copies currently available online, both are rebound in half-leather boards. Its appearance in the October issue (pages 659–665) of this magazine is the first American printing for any part of "Moby Dick", which was later included in Chapter 54 of the book. The chapter concerns a potential mutiny and the appearance of Moby Dick that thwarted the uprising. It was a first report of the white whale while at sea.
