Very good
Description
La Paz, Bolivia: Escuela Tipografica Salesiana, 1945. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. Octavo size, 125 pp., with two typescript letters, all are signed/inscribed by Franz Tamayo. Text in Spanish. A collection of poems by Bolivian poet, philosopher and politician Franz Tamayo (1879-1956); the Franz Tamayo Province is named after him. Tamayo is considered one of the most important modernist or "modernismo" poets of Latin America, along with others such as Oscar Cerruto, Gregorio Reynolds and Ricardo Jaimes Freyre. He was fascinated by Greco-Roman literature, idealized European culture, and strongly opposed Hispanic culture, rejecting indigenous ethnicity as base; concepts which continue to influence Bolivian thought. Despite his dubiously demagogic political rationale, his contribution to Bolivian poetry is undeniable, especially regarding his "Nuevos Rubaiyat" and the present volume, considered among his finest work. This copy is inscribed to his lady friend, Marina Montenegro de Geddes, and includes two signed typescript letters to her. The first letter is briefly thanking her for her pious compassion, the second is a lengthier letter, explaining that he had been ill and wished to write her himself, thanking her for a German edition of "Filon" which she apparently assisted in acquiring, along with a photograph of herself, with some difficulty. Both are dated from 1954, and the inscription in the book is dated 1947. The letters and volume itself reveal an intimacy and deep friendship between Tamayo and Senora Montenegro, offering a unique glimpse into the personal life of this prominent figure from Bolivian history. Text is in Spanish. ___DESCRIPTION: Original buff wrappers with lettering printed in black to upper wrapper, inscribed by the author on the title-page; octavo size (8.75" by 6.75"), [1-5] 6-125 pp., first edition. Two typescript letters, folded sheets to make [4] pp., Franz Tamayo's personal stationary, purple ink with black borders, text and ms signature to recto of p. 1 only. ___CONDITION: A very good copy, internally bright and complete with original errata, wrappers a bit soiled but overall still quite good, some chipping to tail-edge but no significant loss; overall very good with unique provenance. Both letters are in near fine condition, slightly rubbed at edges but still bright and clean. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
New York: William Morrow and Company, 1998. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Paper-covered boards; dust jacket; 8vo; pp. 322. Inscribed by the author on the FFEP, "For Betty Bacall, with much love and best wishes* Tom Wick, *Best wishes translates into mad, wild dreams!" (Lauren Bacall was born in the Bronx as Betty Joan Perske, and only close friends and loved ones used her real name.) Lauren Bacall (1924-2014) was an American actress known for her distinctive voice and sultry looks. Howard Hawks (director, producer, screenwriter) changed her first name to Lauren, and Perske adopted "Bacall," a variant of her mother's maiden name (of Romanian Jewish descent), as her screen surname. The young Lauren Bacall, worked as an usher at the St. James Theatre, and as a fashion model. She made her acting debut on Broadway in 1942, at age 17, as a walk-on in "Johnny 2x4." By then, she lived with her mother on Bank Street, Greenwich Village, and in 1942 she was crowned Miss Greenwich Village. Though Diana Vreeland is often credited with "discovering" Bacall, putting her on the cover of "Vogue" in 1943, much of the iconography surrounding Bacall she cultivated herself with the help of Nancy Hawks, Howard Hawks's wife, who advised Bacall on clothing, elegance, manners, and taste. Even Bacall's trademark voice required arduous training -- at Hawks's suggestion, Bacall worked with a voice coach to make her voice lower and deeper. Her screen debut as the leading lady in the Humphrey Bogart film "To Have and Have Not" (1944) made her an instant star. She married Bogart in 1945, and continued in the film noir genre alongside him in "The Big Sleep" (1946), "Dark Passage" (1947), and "Key Largo" (1948). She starred in the romantic comedies "How to Marry a Millionaire" (1953) with Marilyn Monroe, and "Designing Woman" (1957) with Gregory Peck. She co-starred with John Wayne in his final film, "The Shootist" (1976). Bacall worked on Broadway in musicals, earning Tony Awards for "Applause" (1970) and "Woman of the Year" (1981).
