Description
Oakland: Crown Point Press, 1980. First edition. 5-3/4 in. x 6 in. Boards, fine. Five drypoints with aquatints and (in number 5) hand coloring. One of ten copies, signed at the colophon and initialed on each page. While the prints were executed in 1977, and dated as such, the book was not published until 1980. Pat Steir's quiet, early works - word/image prints inspired by the randomness of John Cage's musical compositions both in design and subtlety - challenged definitions of art, and particularly printmaking and drawing. Abstract marks, images, and words are scattered across the sheet with equal weight. Having written poetry before learning to paint, Steir considers drawing and writing as one and the same. Throughout the 1970s Steir narrowed her research to focus on art itself, making drawings and prints in her own version of Minimalism's geometric and serial formats, exploring the parameters of a mark with a drawn frame. The artist book Word is emblematic of this early period in Steir's career, with its focus on the study of details in language. She examines the differences between words and images, and presents isolated words and images within the regulated grids of her prints. Bound in original printed boards by Kevin Parker, it includes a custom made clamshell case.

Description
Provides a great deal of statistical information about California 5 volumes. Quarto. Approx. 550pp. per volume. Collated complete. Early 20th century three-quarter polished tan calf, marbled boards. Small contemporary engraved bookplate on inner cover of Alexander Baring. Corners show some wear. Ex-library copy (withdrawn) with bookplate to front and rear endpapers, perforated library stamp to title pages, and a few unobtrusive ink library stamps. Light foxing to preliminary and end leaves. Overall, a very good set, generally very clean. First English edition, translated from the Spanish by G. A. Thompson and often simply referred to as "Thompson's Alcedo." . Originally published at Madrid, 1786-89, this great work is a valuable and comprehensive geographical, historical, and commercial gazetteer of the Americas. It covers the entire history of the Americas and is particularly rich in data relating to the Spanish possessions with particularly extensive sections on Chili, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, etc. It also includes numerous entries dealing with Canada and the United States. The general section on "Nueva España (New Spain) is very well covered and begins with, "A spacious kingdom of North America, the limits of which toward the north are unknown…". California is covered giving a great deal of statistical information, and includes a list of the missions of "New California" founded up to 1803. Appended is a vocabulary of provincial terms (largely Spanish), forming a catalogue of American plants, birds, and animals. A supplement provides the text of the Treaty of Peace between the United Kingdom and the United States (War of 1812). "Thompson's edition, for its additions, etc., is infinitely superior to the original…(Sabin). The small bookplate on the inner cover is that of contemporary owner, Alexander Baring, 1st Baron Ashburton. Baring (1774-1848) was a British politician and financier. [Sabin: 683].

Description
New York: Handy Brothers Music Co., Inc, 1951. Quarto sheet music, single folded leaf making 4 pp. Light toning to margins, else near fine. 9 x 12 inches. “Sample Copy” stamped on cover. Inscribed and signed by W. C. Handy on the front cover to Miss Sybil Gregory, dated June 16, 1951, the year of publication. Near Fine.. An uncommon Handy Brothers Music Co. publication issued late in the career of W. C. Handy (1873–1958). The song is credited to Lazarus A. Aaronson, a little-documented composer whose work here was published in homage to Handy. The present copy bears Handy’s contemporary inscription: “To Miss Sybil Gregory — W. C. Handy — 6-16-1951.” Little information survives regarding Gregory, suggesting a personal acquaintance or admirer within Handy’s musical circle. Signed publications from the Handy Brothers imprint are uncommon and provide a tangible association with one of the most influential figures in the history of American blues.

Praze - Prag: Fr. A. Urbánek [PN 24], 1880. Folio. Full black cloth with small contemporary label to upper titled in manuscript, original illustrated title lithographed by Engelmann & Mühlberg in Lipsku [Leipzig] bound in. 1f. (recto title, verso cast list), 3-181, [i] (blank) pp. Text in Czech and German. The attractive full-page title, printed on an olive green ground, depicts a scene from the opera. Slightly worn; light uniform browning; minor creasing to corners; blank inner margin of title slightly abraded. First Edition. The Kiss, a folk opera in two acts to a libretto by Eliška Krásnohorská after the short story by Karolina Svetlá, was first performed in Prague at the Provisional Theatre on 7 November 1876. It was Smetana's sixth opera, composed in 1875-1876 shortly after his becoming totally deaf, and became the most popular of his operas after The Bartered Bride. "Non-Czech commentators have often dismissed the plot of The Kiss as trivial and improbable, hinging as it does on Vendulka's refusal to grant her future husband a kiss. Nevertheless this opera is one of Smetana's most successful. Its fervent lyricism is unforced (remarkably so, considering that this was Smetana's first stage work after he became deaf), the psychological penetration of the characters profound. Its appeal to Czech audiences ever since its first performance owes something to its genre description as a 'folk opera' (underpinned by Lukáš's polka, Vendulka's two lullabies and other genre pieces), but equally to its gentle message of reconciliation, a feature of all of Smetana's late operas and those of many later Czech composers." John Tyrell in Grove Music Online "Though The Kiss is notable for the way the central figures emerge with a sense of reality, it is remarkable in being the first Smetana opera to treat large scenes as entities and not, as in the case of The Bartered Bride and The Two Widows, as mere songs and choruses. Indeed, so continuous is the musical flow that it would have been possible to play The Kiss without intervals had the Provisional Theatre been equipped with facilities for rapid scene changes. ... Tragically, increasing deafness and cerebral complications were to rob Smetana's later works of the very qualities which make The Kiss so endearing, and because some commentators see it as the last work to be written before his mental collapse, the opera has assumed a special place in his output." Large: Smetana, pp. 314, 316.
