A typical example of the books produced by Marie Neurath. Her children's books tended to take complex information and transform it into concise explanations that combined words and pictures. Otto and Marie Neurath established the Isotype Institute in 1942 after they escaped to England from Nazi-occupied Europe. Barcelona: 1911-1929. Very good to fine. Light wear/short tears to wrappers, with little to no text loss.. A robust run of El Consultor de los Bordados, a Barcelona periodical that began in 1905 and was popular throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Here, we offer 62 numbers ranging in date from June 1911 to May 1929. Each issue is in its original printed wrappers (13" by 9") and contains one or more large (approx. 17.25" by 26") folded lithographed transfer embroidery patterns. Offered together with 50+ loose supplements, some colored, dating from the same period. Strikingly visual, together the issues paint a picture of the ubiquity of Catalan Modernisme in Barcelona at this time. Influences from local folk culture, Japanese art, and even Ancient Egyptian art are also present. A full listing of numbers is available on request. A homoerotic photo-novel published at a point when the gains of the first wave of gay organizing in France were being consolidated, an urban commercial gay culture was emerging, and the AIDS crisis had not yet taken hold. The era saw a marked development of explicit gay fiction, yet the genre remained semi-clandestine. This was particularly the case for books with erotic illustrations, distribution of which was restricted to seedy sex shops. The 64 pages of color plates in L'Etalon homme show White men in their early to mid-20s; the images were shot in what appear to be a ratty basement and a seedy hotel room with aggressive chintz wallpaper. The uncredited photos are by Jean-Daniel Cadinot (1944–2008), who was just at the point of launching his career as the leading French auteur of gay porn films and videos. One WorldCat holding: Cornell University (Ithaca, N.Y.). No holdings in the Catalogue Collectif de France.
