Description
Moskva (Moscow): Posrednik, 1906. First edition in book form (issued right after the short story appeared in the same publisher's "Reading Circle" collection); 7 1/4 x 5; pp. [3], 4-31, [1]; paper over boards and 1/4 cloth; illustrated with a portrait to front board; several faint outlines of a stamp from a period school library and a small label to tail of spine; some spotting and age-toning; in good condition. An uncommon, very-early appearance of one of Tolstoy's last short stories, it was initially conceived under a different title - What Was and What Became and it appeared Tolstoy had written a note to himself, of a "possibly worthy plot to explore, about a husband who died a wanderer," as early as 1897. He began writing it in 1905 and the work went through 15 revisions, before it was published in the following year. A story of anger, moral degradation, and despair, it followed the life of Kornei Vasilev, a wealthy cattle trader, who upon returning from a business trip discovered his wife had cheated on him and his little girl was from another man. He assaulted both, then left and wandered, unheard from, for 17 years, before returning home a destitute wreck to ask forgivness, which he would get only from his daughter.
