[5] 634pp. Re-backed in modern spine with raised bands, blind-stamped tooling and the original gilt-stamped leather label pasted on. Retains original leather boards. Edges of the book block in red. Engraved title page. Text throughout printed in a two-column format with decorative woodcut initials and tailpieces. This work is a paraphrased translation of the Pentateuch (the Five Books of Moses) into Spanish, by Rabbi Isaac Aboab da Fonseca (1605-1693), seamlessly incorporating and utilizing past rabbinic commentary and midrash into the text. The previous commentaries referenced by Aboab throughout are usually attributed to the views of "sages" or "theologians" without specifically citing the individual source. The book was important for the ex-converso Sephardic Jewish community of Amsterdam as many of these Jews, who had in more recent years reconnected with there Jewish heritage after a period of more than one hundred years living as Catholics on the Iberian peninsula, could not read Hebrew. This publication is one of a large number of works of Judaica (including bibles and prayer books) published from the 16th - early 18th centuries which catered to that community. The author, a respected scholar and prominent member of the Sephardic community, was himself from a Portuguese Jewish family which had previously been forcibly converted to Christianity. The work is considered to be Aboab's magnum opus, and was the standard by which all other similar works of the period were judged. The engravings which surround the text on the title page by Jan van den Aveele (c. 1650 - 1727) depict a number of biblical scenes and figures, and contain some Hebrew text. The prologue contains approbations (including some Hebrew text) from three other prominent religious figures in the community: Jacob ben Aaron Sasportas (1610 – 1698), Immanuel Abenatar Melo and Selomoh de Oliveira. Text throughout in Spanish. Binding with some light rubbing to the extremities, and some period abrasions to the covers. Interior with some light water staining to the interior covers and free endpapers. Text pages throughout with some sporadic minor to light foxing and water stains, with a few small instances of worming or other holes. Title page with a small hole at the center, and a closed tear at the bottom. The initial 7 printed leaves have been repaired and/or reinforced to one degree or another mostly in the margins. In the case of the title page (laid down) this has resulted in some minor loss of image to the edges of the leaf, and some loss of text along the left margin of the prologue leaf and on p.1 and 3. Pages throughout on the whole in good shape. Binding in very good-, interior in good+ condition overall. About the author: Isaac Aboab da Fonseca (1605-1693) was a leading Rabbi and scholar of the Portuguese Jewish community of Amsterdam in the 17th century. He was born in the Portuguese town of Castro Daire as Simão da Fonseca, and was a member of the large and prominent Aboab family which was comprised of many noted rabbis, scholars, physicians, and merchants over the centuries. He was born into a family of conversos, but still constant anti-Semitic persecution caused the family to immigrate to Amsterdam when Isaac was seven years old. There they reestablished their Jewish roots. From 1642-1654 he was appointed to be the head of the Jewish community in Recife, Brazil during the brief period of Dutch control. He served as Rabbi of the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the first synagogue in the Americas. Upon the retaking of the colony by the Portuguese, Aboab came back to Amsterdam, and in 1656 he was one of several prominent religious leaders of the Portuguese-Jewish community of Amsterdam to excommunicate the famed philosopher Baruch Spinoza. Book is meant to accurately and briefly chronicle the invasion of Manchuria by the Imperial Japanese Army, which began on September 19 1931, immediately following the Mukden Incident, which marked the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Japanese occupation of Manchuria would lasted until the end of World War II. Sunning & tearing to wrappers, crease on bottom right hand corner and inch by half inch section missing from top left hand corner of front wrapper. Yellowing to front endpaper due to age, except for space where the errata has laid all these years. Front wrapper detached. Hinges slightly starting. Wraps in poor, interior in good - very good condition.

Edo: copied in 1809 by “Masatoshi Tada.” This fascinating document is a copy of a log book, prepared by the guards and government officials who oversaw the activities of the famous Inner Sakurada Gate, part of Edo Castle. Following the title leaf, we find a table of contents with the following sections: 1. number of guards and officials, their positions and roles; 2. rules and regulations of the gate; 3. hours of duty and changing of the guard; 4. the actual log; and 5. annual events and precessions which take place at this gate. As one studies this manuscript, one becomes aware of the inner workings of the shogun’s castle in all its complexity on a nearly daily basis: many names are listed, detailed comings and goings of dignitaries and doctors, rules for the workers, security issues in case of fire or earthquakes, armaments at the ready, lists of gifts and supplies for the shogun’s household, etc. In fine condition.

First enlarged edition of an illustrated merchant's guide to the duties and tariffs levied by the Spanish crown on exports from the Americas, chiefly gold and silver, but also concerning timber, textiles, furs, coffee, spices and foodstuffs.After first offering a general overview of Spanish colonial commerce with Western Europe, Garcia de Prado provides a wide range of practical instructions for traders negotiating the hazardous waters of colonial finance, giving sample calculations for the volume of shipping containers, converting currency, and-crucially-providing a comprehensive alphabetical list of the royal tariffs on exports from America and the West Indies, printed as a table for quick reference, in terms of maravedis de plata (silver coins of account) and quintales (approx. 46 kg). The second half of the work is concerned with trade in gold and silver, explaining the six classes of government tariffs and their application to quintales of the metals in their various states (acuñada, labrada, grana fina etc.). Printed at the Royal Navy Office in Cadiz, where Spanish shipping vessels would have arrived from the Americas, the present work anticipates later efforts by the Spanish Bourbons-particularly Charles III and the Marquis de Esquilache-to reform the fiscal administration of its colonial properties. An exceptional poster designed by Erik Nitsche (1908-1998), while working as art director for the engineering firm General Dynamics in 1955. It is part of the "Atoms for Peace" poster series, and was exhibited by the firm at the 1955 International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva, Switzerland. What makes the series so impactful-- aside from their stunning use of color, typography, and image-- is the coherent message Nitsche has woven throughout the pieces: that atomic energy can be used for peace and modern innovation among nations, rather than destruction and discord sown by the advent of Oppenheimer's atomic bomb. 1950. Vietnam photographs of Indigenous highland communities, urban street life, and Western contact, likely made in the 1950s or early 1960s, before the large-scale arrival of American combat troops in 1965. The group belongs most plausibly to the early U.S. advisory period, when American personnel were present in Vietnam from 1950 and increasingly active in South Vietnam after 1955, but still long before the main combat escalation of the war. The juxtaposition of images highlight both upland Indigenous people posed in village or forest-edge settings, and small urban views of southern Vietnam in which colonial architecture, animal-drawn transport, fishing labor, and everyday street movement remain visible within the late French and early postcolonial landscape. Photo archive of 11 silver gelatin photographs, each 2.25" x 3", Vietnam, likely South Vietnam, circa 1950s to early 1960s. Several photographs show Indigenous men, women, and children standing in open grass or along wooded edges, wearing wrapped garments, bead necklaces, and basketry or carrying poles, with one image showing women beside woven baskets in shallow water and another showing a figure working in dense vegetation. Exact ethnic identification is not secure from the photographs alone, but the upland dress, body adornment, and basket forms are consistent with communities from Vietnam's Central Highlands or adjacent southern uplands, possibly Jarai, Ede or Rhade, Bahnar, Mnong, or Stieng, all part of the broader grouping often described in French and later English sources as Montagnard or Degar peoples. Other photographs turn to city and urban scenes with one image showing two women fishing, another of a man in an ox-drawn carriage, a zoo setting with large cats behind fencing, and a formal boulevard view centered on a French colonial civic building that is likely the Saigon Municipal Theatre. The city scenes also fit Saigon, where the long-established Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens, opened to the public in 1869, formed part of the colonial urban core. The posed views of Indigenous highland people and the street scenes of fishermen, cart drivers, and city residents preserve the way local communities entered the visual record of American presence as subjects observed, approached, and documented by outsiders attached to the expanding U.S. role in South Vietnam during the 1950s and early 1960s. Light surface wear, and minor corner and edge wear; overall very good condition. The combination of Saigon views with photographs of Indigenous upland communities gives the group particular force as a compact record of pre-combat American encounter in southern Vietnam.

"It has been said that this is the only case on record of a first edition of a book being published in a country never visited by the author, and where people did not speak his language" [Richards]. Hume, the proprietor of Santiago's main bookstore, was a huge Kipling fan, but it appears that he overestimated the Chilean Kipling market: he supposedly printed 400 copies, but few sold and the remainder were either burned in 1906 or pulped at a paper mill in 1911 -- though some copies, like this one, apparently were neither read nor burned nor pulped. A sheet of thin paper approx. the same size provides “Directions for Making Models” of “Bradley’s Straight-Line Picture Cut-Outs.” Another sheet has color illustrations of the cut-out pieces placed in the configuration of a village. One of a series of themed paper cut-outs from the Springfield, MA company, which was established in 1860 and went on to become a pioneer of the American board game industry. Illustrator Lulu Maud Chance designed this, as well as other villages in the series. Wear to and torn corner of the instruction sheet and tears to edges of the envelope with spots of toning/staining on both. Held in the The Robert Freidus Paper Model Collection (part of the Museum of Childhood, Bethnal Green) at the Victoria and Albert museum.

Set of four vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) double weight black-and-white photos, all with mimeographed text on verso, overall fine. Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) was the foremost South American classical composer of his generation. He came for the first time to Hollywood in 1958 to write the score for the film Green Mansions, set in Brazilian jungles, which starred Audrey Hepburn and was directed by her husband Mel Ferrer. (Wikipedia) One photo is a portrait of the composer; another includes him, Hepburn and her pet Yorkshire terrier; another shows him seated at a gala dinner with Hepburn and two others; and the last shows the two of them (she is helping light his cigar), Ferrer and a few other dignitaries. As it happens, the composer died in November of 1959 -- not long after ending his memorable visit to Hollywood.
