Description
London: Neville Spearman, 1956 First UK edition (and first hardcover edition), first printing. Publisher's blue cloth, with spine lettered in black; in its original blue pictorial dust jacket, with black and orange illustration of a lounging Sebastian Dangerfield, lettered in orange. Fine, with just a touch of toning to foot of spine, and a tiny bump to right edge of front board; fine unclipped dust jacket, with a hint of fading to spine. Overall, a pristine copy. The titular "ginger man" of J. P. Donleavy's classic debut novel is Sebastian Dangerfield, a young and charismatic man studying law at Dublin University, who lives with his wife and infant in an eerie, ramshackle house on a cliff. The book follows Sebastian on his comic misadventures, as he engages in messy affairs and drinks himself into oblivion. The book is told in a picaresque style, in the vein of Henry Fielding's Tom Jones (1749) and Laurence Stern's Tristram Shandy (1759), with stream-of-conscious prose that often verges on poetry. The book was originally published in softcover by the Paris-based Olympia Press, which published other famously controversial books like Nabokov's Lolita (1955) and William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch (1959). Donleavy was enraged at Olympia Press for publishing the novel under their "pornographic" imprint, the Traveller's Companion series, and became embroiled in a twenty-year legal battle with Olympia Press's publisher, Maurice Girodias, which culminated in Donleavy purchasing Olympia Press at auction after Girodias declared bankruptcy. This first UK edition of The Ginger Man was published one year after the true first edition, with the text expurgated to comply with British standards. . First English Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Description
[Washington DC]: n.p., 1973. Near fine.. Comedically arranged original photo album by an unknown attendee of President Nixon's second Inauguration (January 20, 1973) - all shot from the main platform less than ten rows behind the swearing-in. Amusing typed captions throughout poke fun at the President, Vice President, First Lady, and Bob Hope (referred to as "The original...Mr. What's His Nose"). A clipping from the March 5, 1973 issue of TIME magazine tells the unfortunate story of Cecil Stoughton, chief still cameraman for the National Park Service and former White House photographer to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. During the Oath of Office, Nixon reportedly lined up on the opposite side of the podium from what was expected and photographers were caught out of position. In an attempt to capture the moment, Stoughton moved himself just feet behind Nixon, causing the photographer - who was wearing a garish plaid coat - to appear prominently in the background of official photos of the ceremony. This infuriated Nixon; weeks later, Stoughton's NPS position was eliminated. One of the photographs shows Stoughton and is captioned: "The back of the man in the plaid coat." Nixon's unexpected positioning, however, makes platform views of the actual swearing-in ceremony rather more uncommon that one might expect. An unusually angled primary source document of the Nixon era. 8.5'' x 9.25''. Hinged plush leather Family-Vue Photocurio brand commercial album. 6 stiff plastic covered leaves with gold metal accents at corners containing twelve 5''x 7'' color photographs mounted both recto and verso, eleven with typed caption sheets mounted below. Photomechanically reproduced magazine article on photographer Cecil Stoughton neatly tipped onto inside rear board. Small scratch to front board, mild shelf wear at rear, interior contents about fine.

Description
oblong quarto, photograph album, containing 96 black and white snapshots mounted on 17 black paper leaves, images identified and captioned either in white pencil, or, in ink on the image itself, album worn, several missing images, lacking covers, some leaves dogeared, some staining, else good. The images detail the lives of the Rogers family, an African American family of Mamaroneck, Westchester, New York, as well as additional members of the African American Community of Mamaroneck and Rye, New York. There are images of Rene Rogers and her husband, the often dapper W. Harrison Rogers, who was likely a chauffeur for a D.S. Weiskopf, who in 1931 purchased the large estate of John Rogers Hegeman, formerly of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, there are two images related to Weisskopf, and his large automobile, both at his estate and at the Westchester-Biltmore Country Club in Rye, New York. There are images of the Rogers, extended family members in and around Westchester County, the A.M.E. Zion Church of Mamaroneck, founded by an escaped slave named Robert Purdy. There are also images taken by the Rogers while traveling, in Pennsylvania, New York City, the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1933, at an all-black beach, Harrison Rogers and other family in Charlevoix, Michigan, out west, The Boulder Dam, California, including Monterrey, San Francisco and Los Angeles, where additional Rogers family members had moved, including a B. H. Rogers. Cross country travel for African Americans during the 1930s would have been extremely difficult, for a variety of reasons, all involving the endemic racism of the era, sundown towns, segregation, lack of accommodations for African Americans, etc.

Contemporary half-calf and decorated boards. Very good
Description
Paris: Louis Tenré/Patris et Cie, 1833, 1810. Fifth Edition/First Edition. Hardcover. Contemporary half-calf and decorated boards. Very good. 454 pages/116 pages. 21 x 13 cm. This volume is a rare and notable example of early 19th-century culinary literature offering unique insights into the development of French cooking and food preservation during the time of significant innovation in these fields. La Cuisinier: This book reflects the rise of "la cuisine moderne" in Paris, which integrated scientific principles and new culinary techniques into daily practice, making culinary expertise more accessible. The chef gives the reader an in depth look into all aspects of cooking during the post-revolutionary France. Includes engraved frontispiece titled "intérieur d'une cuisine bien ordonnée" and 3 plates depicting ovens and cooking utensils. Albert was former chef de cuisine for Cardinal Fesch, Napoléon's Uncle. L'art de Conserver: Appert, a confectioner, chef, and distiller, developed the first method of preserving food by enclosing it in airtight, sealed containers. (Pasteur later admitted his pasteurization process was largely derived from Appert's earlier methods.) Appert was rewarded with a prize of 12,000 francs by the French Directory (Napoléon) who needed to supply the growing armies with stable sustenance. Appert's signature on verso of title page. One folding plate. [CAGLE 28, 36]. Some foxing to interior. Covers rubbed at corners, otherwise very good.

There are 3 plates for each icon: 2 identical prints of the same outline plate with letters and numbers matching the legend in descriptive text, printed facing back-to-back, followed by a finely detailed engraving. Wear to covers and spine, binding tight, browning and light foxing to page edges with some wrinkling, plates unmarked. A good+ copy of this important anatomical study. The hand is shown life-size with all the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and according to Punt, these were the first plates In which Wandelaar "applied the 'architectonic' procedure of 'projective' transposition of the objects to paper with the aid of a pair of compasses and a ruler" (Punt, Albinus, p. 7; also see pp. 1-6). Boyes, On the Shoulders of Giants, pp. 10-11. noting that Albinus's Anatomical studies are still quoted, especially in regard to ttie intrinsic muscles. Choulant 280. Norman 28. Heirs of Hippocrates 525. Roberts & Tomlinson, Fabric of the Body, p. 328. BERNHARD SIEGFRIED ALBINUS (1697 - 1770) began his studies at Leiden University in 1709, at the age of 12, having for his teachers such men as Boerhaave and Bidloo. Having finished his studies at Leiden, he went to Paris in 1718, where he devoted himself especially to anatomy and botany. After a year's absence he was, on the recommendation of Boerhaave, recalled in 1719 to Leiden to be a lecturer on anatomy and surgery. Two years later, Albinus became rector of the medical school. In 1745 Albinus was appointed professor of the practice of medicine. "Albinus was the pioneer of a new epoch in human anatomy, an epoch during vhich all investigations, and especially those pertaining to osteology and myology, were carried out with the most perfect thoroughness and exactitude and with all the means then available. Anatomic representation, too, enters upon an epoch of high perfection during which the mere outward appearance, superficial investigations, or the mere copying of subjects observed prove insufficient. Artistic and faithful representations of the true form and connection of anatomic structures, discovered through repeated comparative studies, are now demanded. What demands Albinus made upon himself in this respect and how he exerted all his energies toward the conscientious preparation for publication of his anatomic Ilustrations, can best be learned from the preface to the first volume of his Annotationes Academicae (Choulant: History and Bibliography of Anatomic Illustration, p. 276, 283, Hafner, New York, 1962. JAN WANDELAAR (1690–1759) was the artist and engraver with whom Albinus did nearly all of his work. A pupil of Johannes Jacobsz Folkema, Gilliam van der Gouwen, and Gerard de Lairesse, he became the teacher of Pieter Lyonet and Abraham Delfos.
