A very fine copy of Elizabeth Bishop’s rarest title, framed and glazed. Extremely rare
Description
(Seattle: John & Karen Sollid for Mr. David Ishii, 1974). First edition, first impression, and the first separate printing of this poem. One of only 12 numbered copies signed by the poet. First published in 1940 in Partisan Review & subsequently in Bishop’s first collection, North & South (1946), “The Fish” was one of Bishop’s earliest and most successful poems. Robert Lowell praised the poem, along with “The Rooster”, in his 1947 review of North & South as “the best poems that I know of written by a woman in this century”. MacMahon records that David Ishii, a bookseller and fisherman, commissioned this unauthorized printing in anticipation of Bishop delivering the Roethke Memorial Reading in May 1974. While in Seattle, she signed 12 copies: “Seven copies were distributed; five remain in the possession of Mr. Ishii. One unsigned copy belongs to the printer. None are for sale”. Although OCLC records no locations for the broadside, Vassar College Library and the Carter Burden Collection at the Pierpont Morgan Library each have a copy. MacMahon, Appendix II McMahon “Appendix II, Unauthorized Printing”, pp. 210-211. Many years later the publisher’s five retained copies came on the market and sold quickly; the present copy is one of them, as attested by documentation from a Seattle bookseller. We have only handled two copies, one in 2004, another in 2011. The last copy sold for $9,000.00. A mutilated copy with very faint signature is currently on the market at a deeply discounted price. A very fine copy of Elizabeth Bishop’s rarest title, framed and glazed. Extremely rare. Broadside poem, 13" x 9" A very fine copy of Elizabeth Bishop’s rarest title, framed and glazed. Extremely rare.

1858. Ricardo, John Lewis (1812-62). A.L.s. to Latimer Clark. [Illegible place-name], April 1, 1858. 4pp. 201 x 129 mm. Remains of mounting present, small paper flaw affecting place name on first page. Provenance: Latimer Clark. Ricardo, the nephew of economist David Ricardo, founded the Electric Telegraph Company in 1846 together with William Fothergill Cooke; this was the world's first public telegraph company. In 1856 the Electric Telegraph Company merged with the International Telegraph Company, becoming the Electric and International Telegraph Company; Latimer Clark worked as an engineer for this company until its annexation by the British government in 1870. Ricardo's letter to Clark mentions the second attempt to lay the first Atlantic cable, which took place in June 1858. He also refers to the first unsuccessful attempt in 1857: "I hear that the United States cable has not even yet been tested in the water. I am sorry that I can anticipate no other result this year than the disappointment of the last." Origins of Cyberspace 184. .

The couple were discovered "in flagrante delicto" in 1769, which led to Grosvenor bringing legal action against the Duke for "criminal conversation" (adultery). Grosvenor was awarded damages of £10,000. which together with costs, amounted to £13,000. But, Grosvenor was also known to be guilty of adultery himself, so he could not sue for divorce. The couple separated and he settled an annual allowance of £1,200. on his estranged wife. She then entered the "demi-monde" and was a leading member of "The New Female Coterie.".

Three-quarter vellum, gilt to spine.Vellum toned, solid binding. It was with this novel late in his career that some say Irish novelist Byrne (1889 - 1928) got serious: "It was with Hangman's House, though, that he began to identify himself with the traditional Irish storytellers, noting in his preface ("A Foreword to Foreigner's") that: 'I have written a book of Ireland for Irishmen. Some phrase, some name in it may conjure up the world they knew as children.' It is also in this novel that Byrne returns to his Irish nationalist ideas by alluding to the ongoing strife of the Irish Civil War and fight for Independence." (Source: Wikipedia).

New York, N.Y: Scribner Paperback Fiction/Simon and Schuster, 1996. 1st Printing. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 5x0x8. First printing. An excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1996 Trade Paperback. 272 pp. Introduction by Louis Auchincloss. Opening on the French Riviera among a motley community of American expatriates, The Mother's Recompense tells the story of Kate Clephane and her reluctant return to New York society after being exiled years before for abandoning her husband and infant daughter. Oddly enough, Kate has been summoned back by that same daughter, Anne, now fully grown and intent on marrying Chris Fenno, a war hero, dilettante, and social opportunist. Chris's questionable intentions toward her daughter are, however, the least of Kate's worries since she was once, and still is, deeply in love with him. Kate's moral quandary and the ensuing drama evoke comparison with Oedipus and Hamlet and lead to an ending that startled the mores of the day.
