Description
ca1820. As accomplished.. Fine.. Watercolor portrait meas. appx. 185 x 148 mm.. It is on a stiff paper board. Sir Thomas Gresham was councillor, and financier in Elizabethan England as well as the founder of the Royal Exchange. Numerous portraits exist. Hilton made this skillful and appealing watercolor from the attributed Holbein portrait in the Mercers' Company Hall in London. It was once part of the Elhanan Bicknell collection (sold by Christies in a named sale in April of 1863). The watercolor was framed (since removed and retained) and a thin, solid oak board (retained) once served as a seal to the back of the frame. The board has two labels affixed to it. One label appears to be an original gum label with 5 handwritten lines identifying the work and artist. The second is a twentieth century typed label assigning a registration number and identifying the portrait. HIlton was best known for his historically themed works and came from that British school of "effortless" watercolorists at the end of the 18th century. He was a friend of Keats and is also known for the portrait of him. DNB VIII, 585-596; DNB IX, 887-888 (Hilton).

Description
London: Raphael Tuck & Sons, n.d.. Hardcover. Fair. Hardcover. A surprisingly scarce title. No date, but the ownership signature on the free front endpaper is dated Christmas 1908. This charming collection of illustrated fairy tales, including Beauty and the Beast, Tom Thumb. Snow-White and Rose-Red, and Rapunzel among others, has fortunately or unfortunately been well used and read. The quite worn covers are present but detached and the spine is missing. Tears to first couple of front endpapers, and soiling and spots to many of the text pages. Nonetheless a sweet survivor of this well loved book. Measures 7.5 x 10.25 inches. 72 pages. CHILD/012925.

"To the American economy and American destiny, agriculture is what anatomy and materia medica are to a physician. Its the foundation. Nobody knows more about that foundation and how the Marxist planhandlers have been manipulated it than Tom Anderson. The fact is, on this record, Tom will tell you some mighty strange cuttings and seedlings already planted and nourished by your tax dollars in such fertile bottom land as The White House and Our State Department." - from the rear cover.
