Description
1920. [Women in Nursing] Annette Alison. The Power of the Alumnae. Oakland: Everette S. Dowdle, 1920. First edition Signed and inscribed on front endpaper "For the student's library Wheailand Hospital/ Fraternally Annette Allison, R.N. Oakland Cal., Dec. 9 1921" Original cream boards, 94 pages, 5.25 in x 7.5 in. Annette Alison writes about the need to support and recruit women in the field of nursing in the aftermath of World War I: "We have gone forward by leaps and bounds, for our profession is a new one, and the paths of the world are ours." Even by 1950, most nursing schools would only accept and train women under the explicit circumstance that they were single and without children. A practiced nurse concerned about the future of the profession, Annette Alison implores other nursing alumnae to become involved with nursing programs and students, preparing them to enter the male dominated medical field. Boards very lightly scuffed and corners gently bumped, but otherwise in very good condition.
