Description
Scroll (290 x 4780 mm.), with gold paper inner endpaper at front, wooden core roller. [Japan]: n.d., but late Edo or early Meiji. A fine example of an erotic scroll, anonymously painted as usual but with great skill. The scroll contains 12 erotic scenes painted on silk (the well-known “set of 12“ format) of men and women engaged in various sexual activities. As in many shunga hand scrolls, the paintings feature a sequence of lovemaking positions in no apparent order. The figures are drawn to express a fluidity of movement, passion, and pleasure. The accomplished artist has used delicate shading to heighten the scenes. The kimono are richly decorated. In several scenes, the women’s pleasure is expressed by curled toes and fingers. The paintings are richly detailed with metallic pigments, elaborately rendered hairstyles, and renderings of luxurious kimono fabrics. Erotic paintings in Japan have a long tradition, established well before the Edo period. “Many aspects regarding the production of early paintings with sexual content — when, where and by whom they were made, how they were appreciated — are still obscure…There was apparently a radical change in the form of erotic hand scrolls from around 1600 onwards when paintings with a sequence of twelve erotic scenes became common…Each scene in hand scrolls of this type does not normally show any clear relationship with the adjacent scenes, nor is there usually any development, other than presenting a variety of couplings and sexual techniques. Each group of copulating figures exists within its own enclosed space, set against a plain or simply decorated background, as if functioning as an example of a possible sexual position… “Shunga painting remained an important genre in terms of both quality and quantity right up until the modern era, and should no longer be excluded from the study of Japanese art and the broader study of the humanities…The concept of twelve in shunga had more to do with a general sense of completeness, a full cycle.”–Akiko Yano, “Shunga Paintings before the ‘Floating World’,” in Timothy Clark et al., eds., Shunga. Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art (British Museum: 2013), pp. 62 & 70-72. In fine condition. The extreme edges of each silk panel are slightly spotted due to the glue used.

Description
02/11/1885. It is fitting and proper that a nation thus favored should on one day in every year...publicly acknowledge the goodness of God and return thanks to Him for all His gracious gifts. The holiday we know today as Thanksgiving was conceived by Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of the prominent magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book, who engaged in a campaign over years to get Thanksgiving accepted as a national holiday in the United States. She recommended this to Abraham Lincoln in 1861, and on November 28, 1861, he signed a proclamation saying, “I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving.” The next national Thanksgiving was declared by Lincoln in April 1862, and in 1863 he declared Thanksgivings for both August 6 and the last Thursday in November. He went on to declare a similar Thanksgiving observance in 1864, establishing a precedent that was followed by his successor, Andrew Johnson, who declared a Thanksgiving for December 7, 1865. Johnson gave government employees the day off, making the day a legal holiday. The precedent established by Lincoln has been adhered to by every subsequent president.Document Signed, Washington, November 2, 1885. The President declares “It is fitting and proper that a nation thus favored should on one day in every year...publicly acknowledge the goodness of God and return thanks to Him for all His gracious gifts. Therefore I, Grover Cleveland, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate and set apart Thursday the 26th of November instant as a day of public Thanksgiving and prayer, and do invoke the observance of the same by all the people of the land.” The document is countersigned by Secretary of State Thomas Bayard. Every president’s official Thanksgiving proclamation is, of course, in the National Archives. Along with these official proclamations, presidents have signed several additional copies to be distributed to officials. This is one of those copies and marks Cleveland’s first Thanksgiving proclamation in the White House. In 1941, Congress enacted a law to fix the date of Thanksgiving at the fourth Thursday in November, and FDR signed it. Thus did Thanksgiving become an “official” national holiday.

Description
Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, 1788. 32pp. Disbound and lacking the half title. Good+. Reverend Trumbull, an orderly and considerate man, "nominated the preacher at his funeral, and directed what neighbouring ministers should be desired to attend on that occasion; and who should insert in the public papers the account of his death: he also desired some of his particular friends, and leading members of his church, to take care that his funeral was conducted with propriety and christian decency. He also ordered the joiner to prepare him a decent, but plain unornamented coffin." The Reverend's "nephew was Connecticut's Governor Jonathan Trumbull, the only colonial governor to support the war for independence. Gov. Trumbull's son was the artist John Trumbull, whose paintings of the Revolutionary War, including the signing of the Declaration of Independence, are on view in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol building." Trumbull also owned a few slaves. ["Rev. John Trumbull," Waterbury's Slave Owners, Fortune's Story Website of the Mattatuck Historical Society, accessed February 4, 2019.] Evans 21574. Trumbull 1568.

Description
New York: Labor Standard Publishing, 1877. Good.. 20pp. Disbound, lacking wrappers. Trimmed closely along fore-edge occasionally touching text, light occasional foxing. A scarce pamphlet on American labor practices in the late-1870s, and an early work by George E. McNeill, a millworker and noted labor leader. George E. McNeill (1836-1906) was born and raised then later died in Massachusetts after a long career as a staunch advocate for improving labor conditions. In Boston, he served as the president of the Great Eight Hour League, founded the Working Men's Institute, worked with labor newspapers in Massachusetts and New York, among his many activities in support of organized labor. The present work is one of McNeill's earliest publications, and devoted to the issue of a ten-hour work day for laborers in Massachusetts. McNeill provides a history of the effort for the ten-hour day, as well as detailed chapters with cogent arguments on the "reasons for a reduction of the hours of labor," its (positive) impact on production, a section addressing a reduction in wages, and a long final chapter on "Non-interference or Freedom of Contract." The imprint from the Labor Standard Publishing likely refers to the printing offices of the New York Labor Standard newspaper, one of many labor-related publications for which McNeill worked during his career. McNeill was most famous in his own time and for some time afterwards for his monumental 1892 work, The Labor Movement, or, The Problem of To-Day. Eight copies in OCLC.
