Description
London: Printed for T. Cadell, 1830, 1834. First Illustrated Editions. 202 x 135 mm. (8 x 5 1/2"). iv, [2], 284 pp.; viii, 295, [1] pp. Two separately published works bound in two volumes (but often found as companion volumes).. VERY ATTRACTIVE GREEN MOROCCO BY RIVIERE & SON (stamp-signed on front turn-in), BEAUTIFULLY GILT-TOOLED BY FINISHER CHARLES MCLEISH, covers with frame of two gilt rules, with gilt dots along the inner frame, raised bands, spine lavishly gilt in compartments with complex design formed by trefoils sprouting from a central branch along with clusters of berries, the background with gilt pointillé, gilt lettering, gilt-rule-and-dot frame repeated on turn-ins, maroon endpapers, all edges gilt. The two volumes with a total of four plates, 20 illustrations in the text, and more than 100 fine steel-engraved headpieces and tailpieces, after designs mostly by J. M. W. Turner and Thomas Stothard. Italy with A HANDWRITTEN NOTE SIGNED BY ROGERS bound in at front. Ray 13, 15. Spines evenly sunned to a light brown (as usual with green morocco), a hint of sunning to top inch of three covers, faint offsetting from engravings, other trivial imperfections, but A FINE SET, clean and fresh internally, IN LUSTROUS, UNWORN BINDINGS. In handsome morocco finished by one of the finest binders of the day, this is an extremely appealing set of two poetic works with illustrations of considerable interest. Born in 1859, finisher Charles McLeish was apprenticed to Andrew Grieve in Edinburgh, then came to London to work for the prestigious Riviere firm. When Cobden-Sanderson founded the Doves Bindery in 1893, he hired McLeish as the firm's finisher; McLeish held that estimable position until 1909, when he left to go into partnership with his son, also named Charles, who had apprenticed under Roger de Coverly. McLeish's expertise in applying the gilt decoration to bindings is evident here in the intricate tooling of the spine compartments, which required applying individual small tools dozens of times, and doing so with such exactness that only the most careful inspection will spot a couple of minute variations between one compartment and another. The scion of a wealthy banking family, Samuel Rogers (1763-1855) first achieved fame with the publication in 1792 of "The Pleasures of Memory." After Italian travels, during which he met Shelley and Byron in Pisa, Rogers produced a first version of "Italy" in 1822 and issued a sequel in 1826, both of which sold poorly. He destroyed the unsold copies, revised the poems, and published them at his own expense in the present edition of 1830 (our first volume), embellished this time by illustrations. These were the work of two artists with very different propensities--Stothard (1755-1834), who did demure figure scenes, and Turner (1775-1851), who provided landscape vignettes. The success of this edition was perhaps due as much to the artists as to the poet. Britannica describes Rogers as a "witty conversationalist" who "maintained an influential position as a leading figure in London society and as a generous host to brilliant company." Bound in here is an invitation to tea at his lovely home at 22 St James's Place: "Dear Katherine / If you & Miss Mallet / & Wm. have nothing better to do, / pray come & drink tea with me / next Sunday, the earlier the better. / Yours very truly, Saml Rogers / St. James's Place / Thursday Evg." It is possible "Katherine" was London socialite Katherine Jane Canning, daughter of British diplomat Stratford Canning, 1st Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe; Rogers inscribed a copy of the 1845 edition of his poems to her, according to auction records..

Description
Anaheim, CA: Science Publications, 1967. No.1 - No.72. 72 issues. Postbound with red vinyl covers. The first eight issues have been trimmed and mounted on heavier stock (with no loss of text) Very good. Complete run of this rare and influential contactee periodical. We are unable to locate any institutional holdings for this title. Carol Adin Honey (1928-2007) was a prominent American ufologist, researcher, and author who is best known for his close, complicated association with famous 1950s UFO "contactee" George Adamski. Working in the background of early ufology, Honey transitioned from Adamski's primary ghostwriter and secretary to one of his sharpest critics. Professionally, Honey was an aerospace engineer for Hughes Aircraft (with a security clearance) and a pioneer in hypnotism training in California (he operated the first school approved by the California State Board of Education). After retiring from Hughes Aircraft, Honey operated a television repair ship in Ontario, California, for nearly two decades. "This is the first newsletter of a series designed to get reliable information to all interested people. Its primary purpose will be the elimination of much confusion that surrounds the coming of the interplanetarians. Many people are confused over the hundreds of conflicting reports coming from various so-called contactees. I agree with USAF on one point: The majority of the saucer reports are not what they pretend to be. In this newsletter you will get information that will prove itself. It will be scientific and down-to-earth. We have no spirits to consult. Our answers come from inperson, face-to-face physical contacts and from personal experiences aboard the interplanetary craft.

Description
Paris Garnier Frères, 1848. Three vols. tall 8vo., publisher's black grained cloth with blind decorative borders and elaborate mosaic gilt stamped designs in the center of both covers; spines elaborately gilt decorated and titled; a.e.g. One volume with wear to the front joint, the others well preserved. There is an engraved full-page portrait of P. J. de Bérenger added at the front of Vol. I and a two-page ALS by him added to the front of Vol. II. Bérenger was in his lifetime considered the national poet of France who owed his lifelong popularity to his light-hearted verses, some of which are included in this collection.Originally published in 1842-43 by H. Delloye in parts (each part consists of four engraved plates of text and illustrations with accompanying printed pages of commentary and music), it is generally regarded as one of the finest illustrated books of the Romantic period and is often compared with the masterpieces of 18th century book illustration. Gordon Ray devotes several pages to it, reproducing four illustrations (two, full page), one of which is by Daubigny, "Indeed, those of which he himself engraved have a high rank as original prints." Ray goes on to add that copies in their original part-wrappers are very rare (the Otto Schäfer copy sold at Sotheby's 27 July 95 for £5,800.), and that copies in the publisher's cartonnage in fine state have become scarce, "...and prices for them have soared." Ours is an attractive copy and offers the added Bérenger material described above.See: Ray, Gordon. The Art of the French Illustrated Book: 1700-1914. pp. 249-50; 314-15. Description
London & New York: Macmillan and Co., 1896. SECOND EDITION. Original publisher’s cloth with the author and title in black on the front cover. Second edition of Carroll’s early work of logic with the introduction dated January 1896. The first three editions were all published in 1896; the fourth (and final) edition was printed the following year. Intended to supply “for a most interesting mental recreation,” this work anticipates his later Game of logic (1897), and introduces his inventive use of square Venn diagrams to represent original syllogisms. The first section “is a serious attempt to popularize formal logic and accuracy of thought . . . there are plenty of quaint examples, answers and solutions” (Williams, Madan, Green). The appendix is addressed to teachers, and offers a preview of the second and third parts, which were never completed. A few changes were made in this second edition, “including the correction of one ‘splendid’ and one ‘terrible’ mistake; the new Preface is dated 11 May 1896, and its two pages occupy the place of the dedications and next (blank) page.” There was also a sentence added to the ‘advertisement.” Dodgson (1832-98), who was appointed lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church College from 1855 to 1881, strictly published what he considered recreational works in logic and literature under his pseudonym. DNB, XXII, p. 567-69; Watson, New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature, III, pp. 977-79; Williams, Madan, Green, 270.

One section of pages lightly dog-eared (appears to be from minor mishandling, not an intention to mark the pages). 2000 Trade Paperback. xvi, 362 pp. Rattling the Cage explains how the failure to recognize the basic legal rights of chimpanzees and bonobos in light of modern scientific findings creates a glaring contradiction in our law. In this witty, moving, persuasive, and impeccably researched argument, Wise demonstrates that the cognitive, emotional, and social capacities of these apes entitle them to freedom from imprisonment and abuse.
