[Dijon]: n.p., 1845. First edition. Boards. Very Good. AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT OF AN UNPUBLISHED SURGICAL TRACT WITH HAND-DRAWN ANATOMICAL FIGURES. The manuscript contains sections largely concerning the amputation and disarticulation of hands and fingers, with chapters on various methods of incision and one titled "Amputations particulières" [Particular amputations]. The accompanying illustrations, "delin[eavit] ad nat[uram]" [drawn from nature] by Dr Frédéric Lépine, depict hands, forearms and digits in various poses (some delineated with incision marks), bone fragments and skeletal sections as well as surgical equipment. The two pages of medical implements also records the names of each device's inventor: Sedillot, Dupierris, Roux, Guyot and Colombat. One tipped-in leaf, titled "Main prisé dans un engrenage de Battoir à Blé" [Hand caught in a gear of a wheat thresher], presents a case study of a mangled hand with two semi-graphic depictions of the injured patient before and after surgery. The final two illustrations, in a deviation from the common theme of the manuscript, relate the appearance of "Testicule tuberceuleux syphilitique" [syphilitic tuberculosis testes]. In the case study of the hand, Lépine notes that he reconstructed the hand in 1844 with the cicatrisation process being complete by 1845, giving an approximate date for the manuscript. Dr Lépine authored several books of Burgundian local history including on the region's capital and location of his publishers, Dijon. However, he does not appear to have published any of his works on medicine and surgery. Possibly intending to complete a thorough survey of surgical operations for all parts of the body, the incomplete work-preserved likely in the present manuscript only-records Lépine's multiple studies of hands and fingers. Autograph manuscript bound in blue patterned boards backed in sage-green reversed calf, typed paper label to spine, large ornate label on upper board inscribed with title and author name. Some soiling to base of spine, scratches across upper label, some toning and foxing throughout with occasional water stains; all pages intact and illustrations largely unaffected; text neat and legibly written in a fine cursive hand. A UNIQUE DOCUMENT PRESERVING MEDICAL SKETCHES OF REMARKABLE DETAIL.

An iconic poster protesting the arrest of the Chicago 8 on conspiracy charges relating to the protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention. The group, originally as eight members, consisted of Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, founders of the Youth International Party (YIPPIES), Tom Hayden, a co-founder in Students for a Democratic Society, Black Panther Chairman Bobby Seale (whose case would be declared a mistrial during the trial, leading to his exclusion from the Chicago 7), David Dellinger and Rennie Davis, members of the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam (MOBE), and John Froines and Lee Weiner. The address, 28 E. Jackson, was a building where Rennie Davis rented a space, so it is possible that the MOBE printed this, though we cannot confirm.

It is considered Einstein's initial effort, having established general and special relativity, to find a unified theory uniting gravity and electromagnetism, a problem he struggled with for his remaining life.

[a nice clean as-new copy, quite likely owned by someone who didn't actually attend the festival, since it shows no signs of being folded, rolled up, carried around in a purse or book bag, etc.]. (photographs, graphics, advertisements) Pretty much a typical film festival program book, with numerous ads, short blurbs for all films screened, etc. The main attraction in this one (in my opinion, anyway) is the contribution by Bradbury, a one-page fantasy-rant about the kind of movie company HE'd like to form, to make the kinds of films he thinks that the alienated over-40 crowd will flock to in droves: "an exclusive, you're damn-right snobbish company dedicated to mature minds that appreciate not being talked down to or watching finger-shadows on the nursery walls of theaters so loud with slobs you can't hear the actor's dialogue. That is, if there is any!" There is also a good deal of space in the program devoted to Frank Sinatra and Marcello Mastroianni: Sinatra was recipient of the Desert Palm Achievement Award (there's an article about him by Charles Champlin, a two-page spread of tributes from his friends and associates, a fairly detailed filmography, and a one-page interview); Mastroianni, for his part, was given the festival's first-ever Distinguished International Filmmaker Award (seven of his films were screened, so there are program notes for each one, plus a complete (albeit titles-only) filmography, and two articles about him, one an appreciation by Harlan Jacobson). Other contents include an interview with costume designer Albert Wolsky and an article by Nick DeMartino, Director of the American Film Institute's then-new AFI-Apple Computer Center for Film and Videomakers, entitled "Confessions of an Analog Guy in a Digital World." .
