Description
Dublin: John Exshaw, 1765. Fourth Edition (First Irish Edition). 250 x 125 mm. (8 x 5"). 8 p.l., xxvi, 443, [1] pp., 6 leaves (index). Plain contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, head and tail of spine (and some edges and corners) skillfully restored. Four copperplate diagrams inserted into the text, three folding; additionally with two attractive woodcut headpieces and one tailpiece, all with scrolling foliate motifs. Front pastedown with handwritten bookplate of L. A. Skinner, 4 The Ridge, Coulsdon, Surrey. ESTC T129360. Spine and edges of the boards dried and darkened, lower corner of front cover with large discoloration from damp, text with very thin dampstain (all suggesting the book survived a fire?), but the binding sturdy and the text surprisingly clean and fresh nevertheless. This is a nicely illustrated work that had a huge impact on British horticulture as the first work to focus in depth on the practicalities of growing plants in a cold climate like that of Scotland. Scottish lawyer and horticulturist Sir James Justice (1698-1763) was well known among his contemporaries for the collection of rare and exotic plants he curated on his Midlothian estate. He is credited with having cultivated the first pineapple in Scotland and was elected to the Royal Society for his botanical efforts. Fellow Royal Society member William Houston named in his honor the genus Justicia, which contains more than 900 species of (mostly tropical) flowering plants. This work, his best known, was originally published in Edinburgh in 1754 under the title "The Scots Gardiners Director." Because of its obvious relevance for gardeners in Scotland, it was an immediate success there, as well as in northern England and Ireland. This led to the re-titling of the book to "The British Gardener’s Director," and the publication of two further editions in Edinburgh, followed by our 1765 Dublin edition, which seems to be quite rare on the market..

Description
[Salt Lake City, UT]: [Dream Garden Press], 1986. Print/Artwork. Very Good. Photostat print (hand-tinted with watercolor) [43cm x 28cm / 17" x 11"]. The back side of this print is glue-stained from previously having glue applied for mounting, thus the paper is also subtly and unevenly toned when viewed from the front. Regardless, the print is still bright and attractive. Neat and small note in ink at the bottom right corner reads "JUNE". This image can be found in the Crumb illustrated edition of Abbey's novel facing page 142, and in the 1987 Monkey Wrench Gang Calendar at the page facing the month of June. Abbey's quotation reads: “Some tourists stopped to stare at Smith; one raised a camera. Hayduke, standing guard, put a hand on the pommel of his sheathed knife and glared. They went away.” Crumb's illustration depicts: [Seldom Seen Smith praying as Hayduke scares tourists away.]. Photostat print of Robert Crumb's illustration from the tenth anniversary edition of Edward Abbey's novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang. This copy of this print is a unique artwork in that it is hand-tinted (watercolor) by the Utah artist Mark Knudsen. Knudsen was originally hired by Ken Sanders in 1986 to color the Crumb illustrations to then be used and published in The 1987 Monkey Wrench Gang Calendar (Dream Garden Press). Purchase of this print comes together with a copy of the vintage 1987 calendar (The 1987 Monkey Wrench Gang Calendar – Salt Lake City, UT: Dream Garden Press). The calendar measures approximately 12" x 12" when folded and is in "as new" condition having been retrieved from a shrink-wrapped stash from the publisher. The illustration by R. Crumb was originally commissioned specially for the tenth anniversary edition of The Monkey Wrench Gang. Published by Dream Garden Press. Copyright Ken Sanders and Dream Garden Press. The quotation by Edward Abbey is from The Monkey Wrench Gang. Tenth anniversary edition, illustrated by R. Crumb. Published by Dream Garden Press. Copyright Edward Abbey.

Good plus.
Description
Montgomery: Department of Agriculture and Industries, 1904. Good plus.. Twenty-one panel illustrated folding promotional on recto, printed with a color county map of Alabama on verso. One tear along fold lines and minor separations at a few crossfolds, light toning. An Alabama promotional touting the advantages across the state for potential "home seekers and capitalists." The panels of text extoll the virtues of Alabama's geographical location, weather, natural resources, minerals, timber, agriculture, manufacturing, cotton, fruit, stock raising, public schools, and more. Several photographs illustrate the text, including a portrait of Alabama Governor William D. Jelks, Lieutenant and Acting Governor Russell M. Cunningham, Agricultural Commissioner R.R. Poole, and images of a "modern road," a scene on the Alabama River, a cattle pasture, sheep raising, a scene on an "Alabama Cotton Field," a "Typical Alabama Home," and the State Capitol building. The entirety of the verso is a detailed map of the state printed in color by Rand, McNally, copyright 1904. Interestingly, the key to the map lists all cities in Alabama with populations over 10,000, as well as all cities with a population between 5,000 and 10,000. The total? Two: Mobile and Selma. Nine copies in OCLC, mostly in Alabama.
