Description
36 pp. Small 8vo (170 x 105 mm.), late 19th-century brown morocco-backed marbled boards, spine gilt. Paris: Chariot & Joullain, 1775. A scarce priced auction catalogue, which is, according to the Getty Provenance database, incorrectly attributed by Lugt (and the inscription on the present book’s title-page) to Lempereur (1701-79), a Parisian jeweler — not to be confused with his son, the collector Jean Baptiste Denis (1726-96). This anonymous sale very probably consisted of the estate of a man with a similar surname (see Lugt Marques, 1740). A contemporary annotator has added all prices. The catalogue describes 252 lots, including 18 paintings (by Lemoyne, H. Robert, Largillière, etc.), 169 drawings (by Maratti, Rubens, Jordaens, C. Vanloo, Greuze, Fragonard, Callot, Watteau, etc.), 56 lots of prints and books of prints, and nine sculptures. Nice copy. Engraved bookplate of G[eorges] P[annier] (1853-1944), the Parisian art dealer and collector of sale catalogues, and stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of title. ❧ Lugt 2444. Oxford Art online (J. B. D. Lempereur).

Description
3 pp. Small 8vo, modern calf-backed marbled semi-stiff boards (spine slightly rubbed), spine gilt. [Paris: 1769]. An interleaved and annotated copy of this rare catalogue. Amand (1730-69), winner of the 1756 Prix de Rome for his Samson and Delilah (now at the Landesmuseum in Mainz), studied under Jean Baptiste Marie Pierre and became a member of the Académie in 1767. He is very probably the “Jean François Amand or Aman” known to be working in Rome in 1759. From a printed note at the end of the catalogue, we learn that Amand died during a stay in Rome where he was a resident artist of the king. This catalogue, fully priced and totaled on the interleavings, describes the possessions of Amand in 17 large lots of paintings (some by the artist), sketches, easels, portfolios of drawings, and books. Very good copy; no example in North America. Engraved bookplate of Henry Pannier (1853-1935), the Parisian art dealer, and stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of the manuscript title-page. ❧ Benezit, Dictionary of Artists, Vol. 1, p. 387. Description
London: W. Strahan, T. Cadell in the Strand; and J. Balfour and W. Creech in Edinburgh, 1792. Thirteenth edition. 1792 13th EDITION OF DR. WILLAM BUCHAN'S BESTSELLING HOME HEALTH GUIDE THAT SOLD 19 EDITIONS IN AUTHOR'S LIFE, TRANSLATED INTO 7 LANGUAGES. 8 1/2 inches tall, 3 inches thick hardcover, full leather binding, rebacked with leather spine and red leather label with faded gilt title, new marbled endpapers xxxvi, 712 pp, [34 pp index]. Abrasions to covers, corners worn, scattered light foxing, browning to page edges, binding tight, pages unmarked except for occasional marginal pencil notations; overall very good minus in custom archival mylar cover. WILLIAM BUCHAN (1729 –1805) was a Scottish physician and author. He is best known for his work Domestic Medicine: or, a Treatise on the Prevention and Cure of Diseases by Regimen and Simple Medicines, which provided laypeople with detailed descriptions of the causes and prevention of diseases. Buchan's goal was one of "laying medicine more open to mankind." With over 80,000 copies and 19 editions sold in Buchan's lifetime, it was one of the most popular medical texts in Europe and even in the European colonies in the Americas, and was translated into almost every major European language. Upon entering Edinburgh University in 1749, he enrolled in the School of Divinity under pressure from his family. He soon replaced his theological studies with studies in mathematics, botany, and ultimately medicine. He completed his studies in medicine in 1758 after approximately nine years at the university. After leaving the university, he started a small practice in rural Yorkshire before being appointed as a physician at the Foundling Hospital in Ackworth, Yorkshire in 1759. At the Foundling Hospital, he worked frequently with children. In 1761 he wrote his medical dissertation, On the Preservation of Infant Life, arguing that far too many infants were dying in Great Britain each year. There was little response to his work. Later that year, Parliament stopped funding the Foundling Hospital, so Buchan took up a practice in Sheffield from 1761 until 1766, when he returned to Edinburgh. William Buchan published his famous work Domestic Medicine in 1769. The first edition sold for only six shillings and was a great success. In 1772, Buchan became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. ALSO INCLUDED: an abridgement of the 13th edition offered here with publishing history edited by Melanie King, Can Onions Cure Ear-Ache?, published by the Bodlean Library, Oxford University, 2012 (fine in dust jacket). FROM THE INTRODUCTION: The Bodleian Library holds multiple versions of Domestic Medicine in both book and electronic formats. The basic text for most subsequent editions was set by 1774, but for the purposes of this edition I have used the thirteenth edition, printed in London by A. Strahan and T. Cadell in 1792. By this date, most of the changes had been made and a comprehensive list of herbs and remedies was included at the back."

FRANCIS GANO BENEDICT (1870 - 1957) was an American chemist, physiologist, and nutritionist who developed a calorimeter and a spirometer used to determine oxygen consumption and measure metabolic rate. Benedict attended Harvard University, earning his bachelor's degree in 1893 and his master's degree in 1894. He earned his Ph.D., magna cum laude at Heidelberg University in 1895. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1909. William Welch and John Shaw Billings were impressed with Benedict's early publications on animal heat and metabolism, and they conviced the Carnegie Foundation trustees to establish a nutrition laboratory under Benedict's direction. The result was the Boston Nutrition Laboratory, where Benedict remained until his retirement. FRITZ BRADLEY TALBOT (1878-1964 ) received his MD from Harvard in 1905 and 5 years later became Chief of the Children's Medical Service serving from 1910 to 1931. He was a visionary who persevered through war and the Great Depression to develop a complete pediatric medical department to serve the children of Boston at Mass General. He was a pioneer in describing the underlying causes and consequences of "failure to thrive" in infancy and early childhood, quantifying the energy requirements of growing children (BMR) by measuring the expired carbon dioxide (measurements/reference standards that are quite close to those in use today). Talbot also established the importance of vitamin D in childhood nutrition, the concept of food allergy and many other highly novel and significant advances during that time.

London, 1861. Very Good. Bright, Charles Tilston (1832-88). A.L.s. to Latimer Clark. London, January 31, 1861. 2pp. 178 x 110 mm. Remains of mounting on verso of second leaf. Provenance: Latimer Clark. Bright was engineer-in-chief of the Atlantic Telegraph Company, formed by himself, Cyrus Field, George Saward, and J. W. Brett in 1856 for the purpose of manufacturing and laying the first transatlantic cable. Bright superintended the laying of the first complete Atlantic telegraph cable in 1858, receiving a knighthood for his services even though the cable failed a few weeks after its installation. In 1861 Bright went into partnership with Latimer Clark, with whom he developed improved methods of insulating telegraph wires; the two men also wrote an influential paper, "On the formation of standards of electrical quantity and resistance" (1861), which led to the British government's adoption of fixed electrical standards. Bright's letter to Clark dates from the early days of their partnership; it discusses the possibility of finding a office in the west end of London for their business, known as Bright and Clark. Description
New York: California Perfume Company, Inc., n.d., ca. 1936 Date from page commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the California Perfume Company (1886 – 1936). The California Perfume Company changed its name to Avon in 1939. These catalogues, which were issued under varying titles to Avon representatives, are all scarce, especially those predating the name change. OCLC records one copy of a similar catalogue from 1938 (Hagley Museum) and a few copies of catalogues from 1935-1937 (UC Irvine, Hagley, the Strong). Original stiff blue binder with "Avon" in silver on front cover. . 10 x 7 in. . With full-color illustrations of Avon products on nearly every page. Most of the catalogue advertises beauty products, but the last dozen or so pages are dedicated to Perfection Products, the home goods and food products label of the California Perfume Company. Slight smudging to front cover. Otherwise a fine, bright copy. In 1886, David H. McConnell (1858 – 1937) founded the company that would become Avon Products Inc. The company has used the "direct sales" model (in which customers, mostly women, purchase products to resell to other customers) since its inception and counted around 25,000 resellers among its ranks by the 1920s. In the post-World War II economic boom, companies like Avon, Amway, and Tupperware rushed to harness the marketing potential of middle-class women who had both the disposable income to invest in home and beauty products and the social connections to market them. Those saleswomen were able to use their role to build social capital and, in some cases, make money in an era when women's employment opportunities were restricted. These midcentury companies laid the groundwork for today's multilevel marketing industry and codified a type of word-of-mouth marketing style that mobilizes consumers as advertisers and underlies many modern online advertising strategies.

Description
(LONDON TRAVELOGUE). ALS. 4pg. London. June 2, 1856. A lengthy autograph letter signed that is a travelogue of London; the writer mentions both Dickens works, Queen Victoria and the Crystal Palace: we feel as much at home in the Golden Cross as if we had always lived here. I dont know whether you remember, but the immortal Pickwick set off on his travels from this very spot. Its wide windows looking out upon the Strand, and Mrs. Gardners kindness make us like it very much. I have so much to tell you dear Minnie, that I dont know where to begin, for we are out sightseeing all day long, and tired we get sometimes. One day, I was seated in our little parlor (the same, by the way, which your mother had) when the door was opened and in walked Uncle and Joe. You can imagine how delighted we were to see them. Uncle looks very well & Joe ditto. They left the ladies in Paris and they all are to sail on the 21st of June, so with Uncle, Aunt & Lizzie Greene we feel quite at home, but we shall soon all separate. The first Sunday we were here we went to Westminster, where we attended service, and beautiful the music sounded through those mouldering arches, each stone of which seems to be marked with age. As we sat in the Poets Corner you may imagine we could not listen very attentively to the sermon, we were too much engaged in examining the queer old monuments. We afterwards saw the tomb of Mary Queen of Scots & many others of equal interest. London has been very very full and it has been quite amusing to drive in Hyde Park & see all the nobility in their superb equipages with footmen, flunkeys, tigers & etc. all in livery, looking as proud as so many Alexander Selkirks monarchs of all they survey. My Lords and My Ladies; we meet at every turn, and very common looking people many of them are. London is full of singing birds now. Her Majesty gave a charming little concert the other evening where only Jenny Lind, Grisi, Alboni, Clara Novello, Bosio, and half a dozen birds of no less note, sang. We went to the Opera the other evening, and had a very pleasant time. One part of the performance I highly appreciated, that each lady has a lovely bouquet at her seat. Mr. Peabody, who gave us our seats, said that he found a lady never refused flowers. Piccolomini made her first appearance, a bewitching little actress and sweet singer. The ladies all go in full dress, we saw many fine necks but few pretty faces. Of course we have been to the worlds wonder, Crystal Palace, and have been charmed and wonder-struck, as so many before us have been with its orange-groves and fountains, birds & flowers, Alhambra & Egyptian courts, all that is most exquisite in art & nature brought together under that glass roof. Nothing could surpass it but you will see it yourself & be as enchanted as we were. The letter has mailing folds and is in fine condition.

New York: The Radio Daily, 1943. First Edition. Octavo. Embossed cloth-covered boards, printed in colors with "Victory" motif; 1024pp. Mild external wear; internally complete, clean and unmarked - a Very Good copy. Early and important issue of this massive annual directory for radio industry insiders, issued beginning in 1938 through the mid-1960s (with a title change to "Yearbook of Radio and Television" beginning around 1957). Includes call letters for every commercial radio broadcaster in the U.S., organized by state, including broadcast frequencies, owners, station personnel, and contact information. Additional sections are devoted to advertisers, managers and agents, music publishers, and a lengthy, illustrated index of performers ranging from the memorable - Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, Mel Blanc, etc - to the long-forgotten. Of particular interest to the current issue is a section titled "When Radio Writes for War," written by Dick Dorrance and Joseph Liss of the Office of War Information Domestic Radio Bureau, providing advice on "the most effective methods of presenting war information." A treasure-trove for fans and scholars of Golden-Age radio, this issue especially interesting for its patriotic war-time cover and content. War-time issues of the Annual are especially desirable and appear infrequently.

Description
London: Jonathan Cape, 1957. Fine in like dust jacket.. First edition of this adventure story with a dose science fiction - twins Nicky and Judy and their dog Jokey find themselves marooned on an island with the psychic MASTER and his henchmen. In turns hyperbolic, absurd, suspenseful, T. H. White's THE MASTER is somewhat of a science fiction complement to his earlier ONCE AND FUTURE KING. John Clute and Peter Nicholls describe White's SF as "sharing the sentimentality, satirical power, sadness, longing for retrospective havens, manic humor and compassion of his best fantasy." A charming adventure story, scarce in such fresh condition. 7.5'' x 5''. Original blue boards with black lettering. Original unclipped (15s.) color pictorial dust jacket, with painting by White. Cartographic endpapers. 256 pages. Jacket with a touch of edgewear. Binding with tiny spots of soil to rear. Remarkably sharp.

16mo (4 1/4" x 6 1/2"), red cloth, gilt title on top cover and spine, illustrated with maps, 370 pp. Spine a little faded, slight extremity wear, normal browning and aging, not collated, but appears complete; otherwise about very good. This is a German edition of this title. Karl Baedeker (1801-1959) was born in Essen, and attended Heidelberg University. His family was involved in the publishing and bookselling business, and around 1828 he entered the travel guide business.
