Description
n.p.: n.p., 19th Century (?). Hardcover. Very good. Large accordion-style book measuring 6½ by 16 by 3½ inches. Double paper pages pasted together in red and gilt covers and all edges gilt. Neatly written in Burmese script with black ink throughout. Light wear to the covers, some occasional light dampstaining, and one leaf with damage to the center affecting a portion of four lines of text. This has been stabilized with archival tissue. Otherwise this is a very good copy. We are told that this is the Story of King Narin. Burmese leporellos, also called Parabaiks, are accordion-bound manuscripts from Myanmar (formerly Burma) made from strong mulberry paper. .

Description
49 letters, 83 manuscript pages, 12 postcards, correspondence mainly written in ink, in very good, clean, and legible condition, many letters written on Howard University letterhead. George H. Safford was the seventh secretary and treasurer of Howard University in Washington, D.C., serving from January 19, 1899, to September 21, 1909. Safford, like Howard's president at the time, Rev. Jeremiah Eames Rankin (1828-1904), the institution's sixth, was white. (Rankin served from 1890-1903). Safford, like Rankin, also appears to have been a New Hampshire native. Safford prior to his appointment at Howard worked for G. Peterson & Co., the contractors who built the Washington reservoir in the 1880's and as Second Assistant Postmaster General in the 1890's. After his service at Howard, Safford worked in the Department of Agriculture in Washington. The correspondence generally concerns family and domestic affairs and only occasionally touches upon his work at Howard.

16mo (4 1/4" x 6 1/2"), red cloth, gilt title on front cover, illustrated with maps, 530 pp. Spine faded, some minor aging and soiling, some map margin tears and chips, one plate is torn into two pieces; otherwise very good. Karl Baedeker (1801-1959) was born in Essen, and attended Heidelberg University. His family was involved in the publishing and bookselling business, and around 1828 he entered the travel guide business. Baedeker created a different kind of travel book that opened up tourism for a new class of travelers, by guiding the tourist to the principal attractions in a country or area. This information was often edited by Baedeker himself, and sons would take over and expand the business after his death. This edition provides detailed information, along with many folding maps and plates of Switzerland and nearby areas. ODB.
