Description
New York, New York: Fowlers and Wells, 1849. Good to very good. Spotting, short closed tear to upper wrapper. Ink stamp to lower wrapper.. An early treatise on the alternative medicine of hydrotherapy, sometimes referred to as hydropathy. Using water in physiotherapy was most popular in the late 19th and early 20th century, and prompted the popularity of spas, sanitariums, and the use of what were perceived as "healing" waters and spring waters for health. This particular treatise, penned by a German physician, aims to dispel contemporary misconceptions about the practice and promote it to the American public. Subjects covered include: homeopathic treatment; diseases treated with water therapy; the importance of proper nutrition and digestive care; douching and sitz baths; and common errors by practitioners. A fascinating look into 19th century alternative medicines, and how it shaped modern notions of homeopathy and health. Later edition. Single vol. (7.5" by 4.5"), pp. 91, [5], engraved frontispiece depicting the "Water-Cure Establishment at South Orange, New Jersey", bound in original printed wrps. 7 copies of this edition on WorldCat (Aug. 2025).

Description
Pigeon Cove, Massachusetts: N.pl, 1930. Very good.. An advertising leaflet for LePage's Glue, promoting the product via a brief history of "The Paper House". The house, now a museum and tourist attraction, was constructed in the 1920s by American engineer Elis F. Stenman. Everything, save the exterior, is made of stacked or rolled paper-- furniture and all-- including the fireplace, piano, and even the clock. It was an experiment in low waste and the strength of paper. The leaflet here includes one photo of the exterior with two of the furnishings inside. Printed bifolium (6" by 3.5").
