195. [Matchbox label and matchbox label design collection - rinpyō 燐票 ] C. 1950s-1960s 99 loose matchbox and matchbook labels (rinpyō 燐票) backed with bamboo or other lightweight wood. Colorful illustrations advertise a range of businesses, including Western style clothing shop Hashimoto, Marutama pachinko parlor, Hato Tokkyū はと特急 [Dove/Pigeon Express], Kyowa, Mitsubishi and Dai-Ichi Banks. Also included is a matchbook label for Hotel New Nagoya ホテルニューナゴヤ, which opened in 1956 and thirteen years later changed its name to Hotel Nagoya Castle ホテルナゴヤキャッスル, finally merging with Westin hotels and reopening as Westin Nagoya Castle ウェスティンナゴヤキャッスル in 2000. One matchbook has a drawing of “Kyoto Kokusai Tower” which was first opened to the public in December of 1964. Soiling and tears to some of the labels. 7 matchbook labels in a plastic sheet, plus one duplicate. Also in the sheet are two small canceled stamps, an entry ticket for Kiyomizu Temple and a ¥15 bus ticket for the 1958 Pan Asian games in Tokyo. The colorful labels for Nocturne in Shinjuku are split in two, front and back, with “Noct” on one label and “Urne” on the other. There is a chip in the corner of the former. There is also one loose train ticket with a pictorial scene with traditional and modern Japanese architecture and a mountain with a Daimonji in the background. 19 white sheets 28 x 19cm with multiple, colorful matchbox labels laid down per page, for a total of over 130 labels. Label size range is approx. 3.5 x 5.5cm to 5.5 x 8cm. 9 black, 3 gray and 3 green sheets of heavy paper with a single, original design of a matchbook label on each, for a total of 15 designs. Lovely colors and graphic design of original artwork for matchbox labels.
