Description
17/10/1854. Written from the British flagship, it describes the Agamemnon's shelling of Fort Nicholas, memorialized in art and literature today The manuscript comes with the author's record of service, signed by the Captains of the various British vessels on which he sailedThe Crimean war pitted the Russian forces against the French, British, Turkish and some others. It was a great power conflict that stretched from 1853-6 and saw the latter alliance ultimately victorious. The Siege of Sevastopol is one of the last classic sieges in history. The city was the home of the Tsar's Black Sea Fleet, which threatened the Mediterranean. The siege was the culminating struggle for the strategic Russian port in 1854–55, and with its fall in late 1855, became the final major episode in the Crimean War.During the Victorian Era, these battles were repeatedly memorialized. The Siege of Sevastopol was the subject of Crimean soldier Leo Tolstoy's Sebastopol Sketches and the subject of the first Russian feature film, Defence of Sevastopol. The Battle of Balaklava was made famous by Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem ""The Charge of the Light Brigade"" and Robert Gibb's painting The Thin Red Line. A panorama of the siege itself was painted by Franz Roubaud. The nurses who treated the allied wounded during these battles were much celebrated, most famously Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole.During the siege, the allied navy undertook six bombardments of the capital. It all began with the opening siege on October 17, 1854. The flagship of the fleet was the HMS Agamemnon. The attack by the Agamemnon on Fort Constantine is the subject of a great contemporary print.William Johnson was a sailor on board the Agamemnon. He prepared a firsthand account of the day's action. It is not clear whether this was designed as a formal report or a personal entry. It bears some language that might indicate the former but was retained by Johnson.Manuscript, October 17, 1854, on board the Agamemnon, likely in the hand of Johnson. ""Her Majesty's Ship Agamemnon. Remarks October 17, 1854. At Single anchor off Katcha.""He begins by preparing the ship in the morning.""AM - Employed clearing decks of superfluous gear, bulkheads, etc. But pick, spare topmast and topsail yard to 'Vulcan."" Hung astern steam anchor. All batteries firing.10.10 - weighed under steam. French and English and Turkish squad...weighed in four of steamers lashed alongside the port of ship towed.""Then the ships set out.""Order of sailing - Agamemnon, Albion, Green, Britannia, Trafalgar,"" listing also the vessels that towed them.""Steaming toward Sebastopol... 800 yards from Fort Constantine.""The ship enters action""PM - 12.30 - Cleared for action and proceeded under easy steam for Sebastapol.""1.5 - French ships opened fire... Batteries immediately returned.""1.7. Proceed and engage forts. Observed 2 Russian steamers in mouth of Harbour firing. Batteries opened fire on Sampson... who returned. Opened fire with pivot gun... ""Fire returned by batteries from mid fort to left of ""wasp"" and Fort Constantine....""1.48 - ship in action. Shot and shell from Fort doing much damage to hull and rigging. ... opened fire with port broadside with shot and shell on Fort Constantine.""He then lists the bearings of anchorage of the vessel and goes on to describe more action""3.2 Observed Albion go out of action. London Arethusa also hauled out. Ship exposed to the crossfire of the batteries. Fort Nicholas raking us heavily and all forts doing us much damage."" At this point the sail catches on fire.""... Fleet came out of action and proceeded toward Katcha.""He reports the number killed and committed to the deep and names 3 sailors.""At Single anchor off Katcha.""The document. contains some old tape repairs on the verso not impacting the writingIt comes with William Johnson's record of service, signed by the Captains of the various vessels on which he sailed.

Description
London: Published by B. Tabart & Co. at the Juvenile & School Library, 1810. First edition. Contemporary quarter morocco over marbled boards, rebacked with gilt to spine. Measuring 125 x 105mm and collating complete in 8 pages with hand-colored frontis and 8 hand-colored plates. A Near Fine copy in and out, with minimal rubbing to boards. Occasional marginal soiling, and archival reinforcement to fore-edge of title page and to a small hole in pages 3-4 not affecting text. OCLC notes no institutional copies of this small text, though Moon documents incomplete copies at UCLA and the Lilly. There are no other examples on the market. An influential teacher, essayist, and women's activist, Barbauld was one of the later generation members of the Bluestocking Circle which had included Maria Edgeworth and Hannah More. The daughter of Presbyterian dissenters, she was trained early on in classical and modern languages, history, and literature; this access to knowledge shaped her work as she pushed for the expansion of women's education. Though much of her work was addressed to young women, her series of four age-adapted reading primers titled Lessons for Children (1778-1779) initiated a revolution in children's literature in the English-speaking world. "The work is still regarded as a landmark in the approach to the reading of the very young child. The secret of Barbauld's success was that, for the first time, she wrote for a child that was maturing as they progressed through the books. The prose became successively more complex, using longer words, less facile subjects, and more complicated narrative structures. The book was printed in a large, clear typeface, with large gaps between the words, designed to facilitate an adult pointing to each successive word" (Hockliffe Collection). In content and form, the series was revolutionary. The present children's book takes one of Barbauld's lessons and versifies it for even younger readers. Replicating the typography of the original series, it also includes charming illustrations of the narrative to guide small readers and keep their attention. Within the text, a Mother sends her small son to school and admonishes him to work hard. When he meanders through the woods instead, seeking to make friends with various creatures, the natural world chides him for idleness as an ant, a sheep dog, a goldfinch, a horse, and a honey bee each inform him of the important work they do. It is his part to do his, and so he resolves to attend to his lessons. The effectiveness of this versification led to later editions, in 1819 and 1822 respectively. Moon 44.1.

Description
Venice: Hieronymus Scotus, 1545. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo (157 x 106mm). [8], 307pp., [13] leaves, including final blank. Woodcut printer’s device of Scotus with personification of globe and motto “FIAT PAX IN VIRTUTE” (Peace be with thee). Latin translation by Theodore Gaza. 12-line woodcut historiated initials at beginning of first chapter and at beginning of the Universalis generationis partitio... (p. 224) of heraldry. Few woodcut initials throughout. Contemporary vellum; (worn; spine and covers darkened; scattered stains, worming affecting title, next leaf, and last 3 leaves; edges stained brown and gauffered to floral pattern). Sound copy enhanced by Latin marginalia in an contemporary hand. The Renaissance public, as a part of their reading system, frequently engaged Aristotle’s natural writings. Even at the height of this period, at a time when Theodore Gaza had already produced his celebrated versions of Aristotle’s zoological corpus, these works obtained wide recognition. Aristotle’s zoological works, edited by Theodore Gaza, with Italian Renaissance commentary sparked on by the availability of Gaza’s text. Gaza’s version of the treatises, were paraphrases of Aristotle’s zoological works but also included personal observations and information drawn from the other authors. Gaza, in fact, held a virtual monopoly on the biological works of Aristotle, his translation completely overshadowing those before him and especially of his rival George of Trebizond. Gaza’s text had been used mainly as a source of quotations and only in philological and medical works, such as Castigationes plinianae by Ermolao Barbaro or Benedetti’s Historia corporis humani. By 1521, starting with a course on the De Partibus animalium, held in Bologna, did the official Renaissance tradition of interpretation on Aristotle’s zoology take form. The Latin text, which contributed to this renewed interest, was none other than the elegant translation by Gaza. University Aristotelianism, specifically that concerning the zoology, was approached by the various interpreters in the context of systematic exploration of the encyclopedic work as a whole. The ample annotations of this volume showcase precisely this type of interaction with the evolving conversation. Gaza’s work throws light on Renaissance Aristotelianism carried out through the grid of scholastic commentary.

Description
Newark: Pennington and Gould, 1800. 71, [1 blank] pp. Pages 61-68 are misnumbered 53-60, as issued. Disbound, with moderate spotting. Good+. One of six contemporary printings, this is the only one which does not begin with the phrase, 'Connecticut Republicanism.' Bishop was a Jeffersonian and outspoken anti- Federalist, which made him an unusual figure in Connecticut politics. "Learning that he would give this Republican campaign speech as the Phi Beta Kappa orator, the Yale Corporation withdrew Bishop's invitation. Speaking to 1500 people at a local meeting-house, Bishop, in rousing rhetoric, denounced the state and national Federalist party for its leadership, social assumptions, and class prejudices. He argued that the Federalists were deluding the people in order to enslave them under a monarchy and castigated the union of church and state in Connecticut, charging the clergy with preaching Federalist propaganda. The two-hour harangue ended with a call for the election of Republicans to preserve the liberty so dearly and recently won." Sheidley. Evans 36980. Felcone 18. Sheidley 132.

Description
[Washington, 1848. 15pp, disbound, caption title [as issued]. Very Good. Botts, the Virginia Whig, explains his opposition to the nomination of Zachary Taylor who, indeed, was a political cypher with absolutely no record in civil life. Botts's choice for 1848 is the prominent and popular Whig Henry Clay, the Party's candidate in 1844. Botts analyzes the vote in the 1844 election, "when the largest Whig vote ever cast in the State was given for Mr. Clay." Taylor has made it clear that, if nominated, he will not be bound by Whig doctrines. The Party ought not desert its principles; moreover, Clay is stronger than ever. Not in Haynes or Swem. Sabin 6832n. 68 NUC 0683117 [7]. Not in Eberstadt.

1895. Printed on paper as check to A.C.M.I. [Arizona Co-Operative Mercantile Institution] from R.C. Kinder in the amount of $4.55 to Joe L-? in Black Canyon, Arizona Territory. While perfectly legal, checks in Arizona Territory in the 1880's and 1890's were usually on printed bank stock. Joseph Fish had been instrumental in establishing the bank for Mormon families but it had been a difficult process. The tiny Mormon community in the Black Canon [Canyon] era had struggled and the stage line was still having troubles that had just been established between the Black Canon station and Phoenix.
