London: Macmillan and Co., 1879. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Original red publisher's cloth paneled in blind, gilt title on upper cover, slight soiling. An excellent presentation copy inscribed in purple ink, "Mrs. Neate from the Author." Preserved in a modern burgundy cloth box with red morocco sides, gilt lettered. First edition, first issue of this most popular word puzzle, invented by Carroll, that became a parlor craze in its time. "The rules of the puzzle are simple enough. Two words are proposed, of the same length; and the Puzzle consists in linking these together by interposing other words, each of which shall differ from the next word in one letter only." Beginning as a series of single problems which appeared in Vanity Fair on March 29, 1879, these games were collected by Macmillan and published here for the first time in book form. There are thirteen puzzles dated between March 29 and June 21, 1879. The name "doublets" was adopted after a passage in Shakespeare's Macbeth. Dodgson (1832-98), lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church College from 1855 to 1881, purportedly invented the game for Julia and Ethel Margaret Arnold, two little girls who "found nothing to do." Sophia Neate (1832-1908) of Heatherside, Woking, took on the care of Sally Sinclair and her siblings, whom Dodgson liked very much, when their parents died. Neate was supported financially by Dodgson and the actor Lionel Brough. On first meeting Mrs. Neate on June 26, 1879, Dodgson wrote in his diary that he ‘found her so interesting that I stayed 4 hours!" He occasionally visited her and noted the progress of the Sinclair children as they grew (see Cohen, The letters of Lewis Carroll, 1979, p. 334n).

Pacific Theater, World War II: Self-published, 1943. Book. Very Good. Ring Bound. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. A superb World War II archive featuring a significant manuscript photograph album (oblong 17" x 12") containing 147 photographs on 46 pages (17 pages blank at rear), service records, citations, orders, medals, patches, bars, newspaper clippings, ID card, dog tags, and additional loose photographs and negatives, all belonging to Edwin Oscar Ahbe (1916-1995) . Ahbe was inducted on Dec. 1, 1943, reporting to Camp Peekskill, NY and serving as a Cameraman Motion Picture 043 and Combat Photographer in the 3374th Signal Photographic Service Company. After stops at Fort Sheridan and Camps Smith and Crowder, his first overseas photographs in the album begin in Ceylon. A small manuscript list shows he left NY early on Oct. 20, 1944 and records him being in Newfoundland, Azores, Cashblanca (sic), Tripoli, Cairo, Aboudan Iran, Karachi India, Kandy Ceylon, Burma, and China. His citation for the Bronze Star for meritorious service, 16 Jan 1945 to 10 June 1945 as a combat motion picture cameraman 5322nd US Army Section (Prov.) SE Asia Command attached to British 14th Army in Central Burma reads "During this period Tech. 5th Grade Ahbe, under arduous combat conditions, photographed several phases of battle preceeding the fall of Mandalay, an assault crossing of the Irrawaddy River at Mitchie, Burma and complete and excellent coverage of the Battle at Meiktila ... he carried out his duties under the throes of a severe case of dysentery and living under bitter field conditions". He received his Purple Heart "for wounds received on 9 May 1945 from enemy action near Meiktila, Burma". On 20 Sept 1945 Ahbe received orders authorizing him to take photos of Japanese and American installations in Canton, China. Ahbe was an excellent cameraman, and the photos in the album bear captions from Kandy Ceylon, Imphal, Shweba Burma, Meiktila, Mongwa, Toungoo ( a gruesome photo of a dead Japanese pilot next to his crashed plane), Rangoon, Calcutta, HQ Ceylon, Kunming China, Nanning, Kaliakunda, Canton, and Kanehrapara India. They vary in size from, 2 1/2" x 3", 3" x 4", 3 1/2" x 4 1/2", up to 5 1/2" x 7", 6 3/4" x 8", 7 1/2" x 9 1/2", and 8" x10". His Honorable Discharge Cert. dated 17 Jan 1946 lists two Overseas Service Bars, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, WWII Victory Medal, and China War Memorial Badge, all of which are included. Rome: Antonio Lafréry, 1552. Hardcover. Fine. First state (of three.) A rich impression with wide margins, light marginal foxing and a little light soiling, extreme upper margin a little ragged. Inscribed on the pedestal: “LVPAE ROMVLVM ET REMVM VRBIS CONDITORES LACTANTIS ANTIQVVM AC AENEVM IN CAPITOLIO SIGNVM.” (Ancient bronze image of the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus, founders of the city, on the Campidoglio). Signed “ANT. LAFRERII FORMIS ROMAE MDLII”. An icon of central importance to the mythology and history of the city of Rome, and an artwork that served as the nucleus of Europe’s first public museum. This print, attributed to the French emigree engraver Nicolas Béatrizet, was issued by Lafréry in 1552, the year before he agreed to a partnership with his rival, Antonio Salamanca. After Lafréry’s death the plate passed to his nephew Claudio Duchet. It was reprinted by Giovanni Orlandi in 1602 and afterwards (before 1622) by Hendrick van Schoel. The first definitive reference to this statue of the she-wolf (the twins are Renaissance additions) dates to the late 12th- or early 13th century. In his “Mirabilia Romae”, the Oxford pilgrim Master Gregorius describes that statue, in the portico of the Lateran Palace, at which time it was in a damaged state, broken off at the feet. According to Gregorius, the wolf served as a pendentive to another (now lost) statue, that of a ram, which the wolf seemed to stalk. In 1471, Pope Sixtus IV (reg. 1471-1484) bequeathed the statue and four other ancient bronzes -the spinario, the Camillus, and the bronze head and hand (holding a globe) of Constantine- to the people of Rome to serve as the core of the nascent Capitoline Museum, the first public museum in Europe. A long inscription at the entrance of the Palazzo dei Conservatori documents this event and describes Sixtus’ donation as an act of restitution of the city’s ancient patrimony to its people: “Ob immensam benignitatem Aeneas insignes statuas priscae excellentiae virtutisque monumentum – Romano populo unde exorte fuere restituendas condonandasque censuit.” The she-wolf was placed on a platform projecting from the façade of the Palazzo dei Conservatori (Sixtus had given 100 gold florins to the Conservatori specifically for the relocation and installation of the statue.) A drawing by Heemskerck from the mid-1530s shows the sculpture in that location. In the middle of the 16th century, it was moved to a loggia, where Aldrovandi saw it prior to 1556. The loggia was later walled in to create an enclosed chamber known as the sala della lupa, in which the she-wolf still resides.

When Boston Commissioner Loring signed Burns' arrest warrant, Richard Henry Dana, Jr. and Charles Ellis immediately volunteered to defend Burns. On ""May 26 there was a mass meeting in Faneuil Hall to protest Burns' arrest. This meeting was followed by a poorly planned and disastrously executed… attempt to rescue Burns… Despite conflicting testimony and imperfect evidence provided by Suttle, Loring declared Burns was indeed Suttle's slave."" With that Burns was taken from the courtroom and through streets crowded with his supporters, then placed aboard a ship ""for return to Virginia. The trial and removal of Burns from Boston created one of the great spectacles of the late antebellum period"" (Finkelman, 107-112).""The Burns case made slavery appear to Northerners as an immediate threat… Walt Whitman was impelled to write an ironic piece, A Boston Ballad, soon to be incorporated into his revolutionary volume Leaves of Grass… At an antislavery rally in Framingham, Massachusetts, on July 4… William Lloyd Garrison burned copies of the Fugitive Slave Law and the Constitution as the large crowd chanted, 'Amen!' Thoreau delivered his speech, Slavery in Massachusetts, declaring that the American system had lost its integrity and purity… The antislavery sentiment bred by the case helped give birth to the Republican Party, which in turn fostered Lincoln's Presidency, the South's secession and the Civil War"" (New York Times). This is a handsomely bound copy of the biography of the author of "Utopia" and a major figure in the political, ecclesiastical, and intellectual history of his time. A friend of Erasmus and a believer in church reform, Thomas More (1478-1535), served Henry VIII as chancellor, disagreed with the king's severance of ties with the Catholic Church, and was executed for his refusal to acknowledge Henry as Supreme Head of the Church of England. First printed in Douai between 1626 and 1631 without explicit attribution of authorship, this memoir had a rather vague original preface that gave the impression its author was More's great-grandson and namesake Thomas (1565-1625). Our edition sets the record straight, properly crediting another great-grandson, Cresacre More (1572-1649). DNB speculates that Cresacre, a recusant perhaps fearing retaliation, deliberately obfuscated the issue. An ardent Catholic, Cresacre dedicated his work to the French queen of Charles I, Henriette Marie. The biography, which includes a number of letters written by More to his family, has always been considered a principal source for More's career. The binding here is a perfect example of the kind of beautifully done French classical work produced for an extended period under the name of Chambolle. A rough contemporary of, and certainly the equal in technique to, binders like Trautz, Marius-Michel Père, Lortic, and Cuzin, the elder Chambolle served his apprenticeship under Hippolyte Duru and later formed a partnership with him, as is clear from the stamped signature on our two volumes. Duncan & De Bartha says that this collaboration began "at some point" and implies that the partnership was formed sometime after Chambolle established a premises at 20 rue de Savoie in 1873. Chambolle's son continued the business when his father retired in 1898; according to Duncan and De Bartha, although the firm "showed a cautious recognition of the . . . preoccupation with Art Nouveau," classical work was always the mainstay of the Chambolle bindery. Our Large Paper Copy is 20 mm. taller than the regular edition, as recorded by Keynes, and the spacious margins set off Pickering's printing very nicely..

Large folding color map in two sheets, each sheet 21.25 x 29.5 in.; showing roads, railways, cities, towns ports, shipping lines, and major resources such as tea, rubber and metals, insets of Singapore and greater East Asia; short closed tears and toning at folds, one small hole rubbed through paper in an ocean area, ex-library, with accession stamp and library seal (Possibly reading 台北東國寅字図書館) on versos. This map was one of many produced by Japan's colonial government in Taiwan in the leadup to Japan's invasion of Southeast Asia. It was published November 3rd of 1941. Roughly a month later, on December 8th, Japan attacked Malaysia (then occupied by the British) simultaneously with Pearl Harbor. The campaign was a great success for Japan, giving it access to important natural resources and forced labor.

Providence: H.H. Brown and A.H. Stillwell, 1840. Scarce first edition. A rapidly-spreading fire broke out on the "Lexington" as she steamed from New York to Stonington. The engines could not be stopped and life boats could not be launched. "Only four survived of the 126 on board; they had floated on cotton bales and wreckage. One account claimed that a sloop could have saved many of those in the water, but that the captain feared to lose the tide, and made his home port."See Huntress 305C. Occassional tanning and foxing throughout. Handsomely rebound in modern black calf over marbled boards, with leather title panel inset into front board.
