Description
29/07/1955. “You need an awful lot of luck when working with the sea and with fish.” A fascinating, unpublished letter obtained by us directly from the recipient’s familyOn HemingwayAfter covering the Spanish Civil War, in 1939 Hemingway purchased Finca Vigía (“Lookout Farm”), an unpretentious estate outside Havana, Cuba. In 1940 he published “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, which many consider his best book. All of his life Hemingway was fascinated by war - in “A Farewell to Arms” he focused on its pointlessness, and in “For Whom the Bell Tolls” on the comradeship it creates. During World War II, he flew several missions with the Royal Air Force and landed with American troops on D-Day. He saw a good deal of action in Normandy and in the Battle of the Bulge. He also participated in the liberation of Paris. Following the war in Europe, Hemingway returned to his home in Cuba and turned his attention to writing again. He also traveled widely, and at the end of their 1953-1954 African safari, the Hemingways survived a near-fatal plane crash, only to have their rescue plane crash the very next day. Though they survived the second crash as well, newspapers around the world carried brought the details to the reading public. Soon after, he received the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for “The Old Man and the Sea”, a short heroic novel about an old Cuban fisherman who, after an extended struggle, hooks and boats a giant marlin only to have it eaten by voracious sharks during the voyage home. That book also played a role in gaining for Hemingway the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. It ran in its entirety in five million copies of Life Magazine, and the 50,000 copies printed in book form sold out in ten days.In 1955, back in Cuba, Hemingway turned fifty-five and tried to follow his doctors’ advice by reducing his drinking. In October it is announced that he has been awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. All of his wife’s’ efforts to protect his privacy were sabotaged by the crush of worldwide press and the fact that Hemingway invited any and all to the Finca Vigia to visit. In the summer of 1955 he was working on the filming of “The Old Man and the Sea” starring Spencer Tracy. The pace of people and press, of lunches and drinking, finally takes its toll and in the autumn of 1955 Hemingway took to his bed for two months, suffering from hepatitis and nephritis. On his friend Mary LouA young American naval officer named Morris was on a training mission with the military and a liberty stop was scheduled for Havana, Cuba, in late January 1955. Mary Lou Firle, his girl friend at the time, and later his wife, was then a second year student at CCNY, and she arranged a trip Cuba so they could meet in Havana. She went a week earlier and stayed at Veradero Beach outside Havana with some other students. Their place at the beach cost $1.00 per day. Before she left she bet a friend that she would have Ernest Hemingway sign the book she had, “Farewell to Arms.” Mary Lou and boyfriend Morris met in Havana. They went to the famous El Floridita for daiquiris and had dinner. She wore pants (slacks) which were unusual for ladies at the time. The next day they went to Veradero Beach. His ship departed on Sunday.A day or so Later Mary Lou telephoned Ernest Hemingway. When he answered she introduced herself and added, “I have a friend at Fordham University.” Hemingway immediately assumed the friend was Prof. Bob Brown who had been in touch with Hemingway on several occasions. Brown was writing a book or articles about Hemingway. Hemingway told Mary Lou that his wife Mary was away and he had to entertain visitors from the French Embassy that afternoon. He asked her if she would come to his home and help him. Mary Lou agreed and Hemingway sent his driver to pick her up.At the meeting a member of the group, possibly the ambassador, said she looked familiar and that he had seen her at the Floridita with a naval officer. She stood out because she wore pants. After the meeting the group drove her back to Havana. Hemingway invited her back the next day for lunch and sent his driver to pick her up. They spent the afternoon talking. When Hemingway asked her about Prof. Brown, she replied, “Who is Professor Brown?” She said she knew one of his students. Hemingway laughed really hard about that and her “trick.” She had told him of her family background, that her parents were born in Germany. Since she had been at Veradero Beach for a week she had a deep tan, and Hemingway called her the “Black Kraut.” The reason for the nickname, Hemingway said, was that he called his good friend, Marlene Dietrich, the famous German actress, “Kraut”; so Mary Lou would be the “Black Kraut.” Later that day Hemingway’s driver drove her back to Havana. In the Spring of 1955 Mary Lou, a friend and Morris met Professor Brown at his home on Long Island. When Mary Lou wrote to Hemingway about a possible trip to Cuba in the Summer, he wrote back to discourage the trip (too hot in Cuba). He told about how busy he was with his film, “The Old Man And The Sea,” adding that “You need an awful lot of luck when working with the sea and with fish.”Hemingway’s letter to his black krautTyped letter signed, Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, July 29, 1955, to Mary Lou. “I don't think August is a good time to take a vacation in Cuba . It is cooler here in the hills than any place except the sea but last night it was so hot I couldn't sleep. The trade winds are not blowing and the general weather plan for July has been very hot mornings in town and moderately cool here until lately; then rains starting at noon. For two weeks the first part of July it rained nearly all day day and night. This was good for the farm because we had had a seven months drought. But it is poor vacation weather. August promises to be very hot and probably with rains in the afternoons. You would be much better off to take a vacation somewhere in the north where it should be cool by then. That heat spell they have been having can't keep on forever.“I am working terribly hard on my book and am on page 526. I have to concentrate on it all August heat or no heat as must start photography at sea of fishing for The Old Man and The Sea. Have had to interrupt several times to organize on this. It is a tough job with many problems; some very difficult. There will be people here that are working on that and the house, unfortunately, will be full in August and September when the actual photography starts. Peter Viertel will be back from Europe with the script which he and I worked on the first two weeks of June. We have a chance to make a great picture with patience, fortitude and very much luck. You need an awful lot of luck when working with the sea and with fish. The Gulf Stream current which is essential to bring the fish did not run for six weeks and is only starting tentatively now.“Must stop now and get to work as I have to take two men who are studying the problems of the film out all day tomorrow and I must get in a good day's work today. Bob Brown, the man you were supposed to be a pupil of, wrote me that you had been out at their place and that he and his wife enjoyed your visit and found you charming.” He adds in his hand, “Thanks for the birthday wishes. Whenever yours is, I wish you the same.” With the envelope addressed in his hand. The subjects and subtexts of the letter are all the essential Hemingway, and rare to find together in one letter - script writing, working on a book, thoughts on the sea and fish, photography, the challenges of making a great film from one of his books, his hospitality, and his strong sexual impulse (his wife was away). Hemingway famously rewrote the ending to ""A Farewell to Arms"" numerous times, and that is possibly the writing he refers to.The letter has been in the family’s possession since it was received, and we acquired it direct from them. Mary Lou had promised Hemingway that she would not sell the letter during her lifetime and kept her promise. She told Morris it would be ok to sell it after she passed.

New-York: V.G. Audubon, 1856. Very Good. New-York: V.G. Audubon, 1856. Second Edition. Three volumes; large octavos (27.5cm); publisher's full blind-tooled brown morocco, gilt-lettered spines in six compartments, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; a hundred and fifty-five (155) hand-colored plates lithographed by J.T. Bowen, collated complete. Leather a bit scuffed and scratched, especially along spines, some rubbing to joints, spines uniformly darkened, scattered foxing to textblocks and plates, else a Very Good set. Contemporary ownership ex libris of R.E. Carr to front pastedowns of Vols II and III. Splendid example of the late collaboration between American ornithologist John James Audubon (1785-1851) and his friend and associate the Reverend John Bachman (1790-1874)--indeed, Audubon's two sons were married to Bachman's two daughters. Though Audubon, already a cause célèbre for his monumental "Birds of America" was awarded lead billing on the title page, Bachman wrote and edited the majority of the text.

Description
[Dawson City, 1901. Very good.. Five photographs, each measuring 11 x 14 inches, forming an 11 x 70 inch panoramic view of Dawson City. Each photograph with different gradations of toning (the central panel with excellent contrast, the rest with varying degrees of fading), minor wear. A substantial turn-of-the-century panoramic photograph of Dawson City, in five sheets, viewed from the west side of the Yukon River. The photograph was produced by H.J. Goetzman, who worked as a commercial photographer in the Yukon from 1897 until 1904, recording the scenery, life and activity of the route to the gold fields through Alaska and Canada, Dyea, the Chilkoot Trail, White Pass Canyon, Bennett, Dawson, and the Klondike gold fields. He ran Goetzman's Photographic Studio in Dawson from 1898 to 1904. The Yukon Archives holds another example of this set, and their catalog record offers the following details on the content: "The panorama stretches from north of Dawson to south of the Klondike River. Many streets, buildings, houses, freight sheds, piles of wood, rafts, boats, and sternwheelers are visible. The Yukon River appears to be low. Photograph #1 (beginning at the right) includes the Territorial Administration building, North-West Mounted Police compound, Front Street, Commissioner's Residence, Territorial Court House, Klondike River, and Klondike City; Photograph #2 includes Boyle's Wharf, Front Street, and the Fair View Hotel. A road leading up the hill is visible in the background; Photograph #3 includes White Pass & Yukon freight sheds, ferry tower, Simpson's Hotel, Aurora Hotel, Mechanics Emporium Block building, N.C. Co. [Northern Commercial Company] shed, Hotel McDonald on Second Avenue, Palmer Bros., and Bartlett Bros; Photograph #4 includes the sternwheeler 'Will H. Isom', sternwheeler 'Sarah', Ladue Co. freight shed and building, N.C. Co. building and freight shed, N.A.T. & T. Co. [North American Transportation & Trading Company] freight shed, White Pass freight shed, and Yukon Saw Mill Co.; Photograph #5 includes the Moosehide Slide and N.C. Co. buildings. An impressive, highly detailed view of Dawson City just after its transformation by the burst of commercial activity brought by the Klondike Gold Rush.

The May-Queen is an attempt to write a work in the tradition of the English pastoral and has many points of musical style in common with Handel's work [Acis and Galatea], for example the extensive use of compound and triple rhythms, accompagnato recitative, simple illustrative instrumental effects, and comic elements. Description
1854. Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1854. Original blind-stamped olive-green cloth. First (only?) Edition of this 419-page novel of Boston high society, written by a major member of that group. This a book about Boston's most prominent family, "the Barclays" (for which, read "the Otises") -- their rise to power, and how they shaped the City of Boston. Eliza was the wife of HGO Jr, not to be confused with her husband's mother (née Sally Foster), who also was Mrs. Harrison Gray Otis. HGO Jr died suddenly "of apoplexy" in 1827, at age 34, so by the year this book was published, 58-year-old Eliza had been a widow for 27 years. Eliza Henderson Boardman Otis, or "Mrs. Harrison Gray Otis," as she was known, was an heiress, socialite, and patriotic supporter of many civic ventures. Her husband, Harrison Gray Otis, Jr. (1792-1827), was the son of a Boston mayor and died soon after their marriage. Although her name is little known today, Mrs. Otis was one of the most popular society figures of the nineteenth century. At the outset of the war in 1861, she was invited to oversee Boston's City Donation Room to collect goods and money for Union soldiers and their families [Geni]. Late in life she also concentrated her efforts upon the securing of George Washington's home at Mount Vernon as a historic treasure. This volume, still in the original cloth, is in near-fine condition (very little wear, but with some discoloration of the cloth, as is typical for olive-green). Wright II 1828. Provenance: This copy is inscribed calligraphically by the author, "P P Pope Esq | with the kind regards of | Mrs Harrison Gray Otis | [flourish]". She additionally wrote the recipient's name at the top of the title page. We have not been able to determine who P.P. Pope was.

Description
BRET HARTE (1836-1902). Harte was a Nineteenth Century poet and author best known for writing about life in early California.9 pages. 5 x 7 . A complete set of illustrated verses from Bret Hartes 1870 poem Plain Language from Truthful James, later known as The Heathen Chinee. The poem was intended as a satirical critique of nineteenth-century Californian prejudices against the Chinese, but it was interpreted by much of its readership as anti-Chinese and was often republished in that context. Harte himself, however, was strongly against racism. These images are from a series published in 1870 by Chicagos Western News Company with illustrations by Joseph Hull. They pages are in fine condition with some light aging and staining.

Description
Quarto, two pages, in very good, clean and legible condition. After discussing removing the Mercer County seat in his own district, Sawyer writes: "We are yet hammering at Origon , we will not be done with it for two weeks yet. On the whole I am very well pleased with your proceedings on the 8th, there are some little things that I would rather see different, for instance, the Resolution at the Supper, "the Democracy of Ohio sends greetings to the Democracy of New York", I think I understand that Resolve and if I do I enter my solemn protest that shall move to strike out "New York" and insert "Michigan", that convention resolve against the Black tariff of 42, yet Resolve in favor of Silas Wright who voted for it. The resolve in favor of Oregon and the whole of it and in favor of Wright who voted in Senate to ratify the Webster Treaty to give to Great Brittain a great portion of the State of Maine I oppose and shall continue to do so … I also oppose a Resolution puffing J. C. Calhoun for I consider him the last man to be toasted by the Democracy. He is trying at this moment to give Oregon to England and may be the means of defeating the notice. Dam such a Democrat as Calhoun is…" A leading Democrat expansionist of the "Manifest Destiny" era, a few weeks after he wrote this letter, Sawyer, implored Congress to evict Britain from the entire American Continent, stressing that the United States could soon require "every foot of territory" on the continent for its rapidly growing population. This was the height of the "54-40 or fight" movement which called for US annexation of the entire northwest up to the southern limit of Russian Alaska. But the outbreak of the Mexican-American War three months later nixed the possibility of simultaneous hostilities with England and forced a diplomatic compromise – opposed by militant hardliners like Sawyer – to settle the US-British Canadian border at the 49th parallel.

First edition; 8 1/2 x 5 1/2; pp. [2], 5-95, [1]; light-brown, pictorial wraps, designed by Natalia Gerken-Rusova; spotting to margins; in about very good condition. Dmytro Dontsov (1883 - 1973) was a Ukrainian author, journalist, and a radical political thinker with great influence over the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. Born in a Cossack officer's family, Dontsov joined the Ukrainian Social-Democratic Labor Party in 1905, was arrested shortly after for being an instigator in "Socialist politics," and was forced to move to Vienna in 1909. After the Revolution, he returned home and was appointed Head of Pavlo Skoropadsky's Government's official news agency. By 1922 Dmytro had rejected the Nationalist ideas of his youth and had increasingly become immersed in radical Nationalism. In 1939, right before the takeover of Western Ukraine by the Soviets Dontsov fled his country for Bucharest, then Prague, Germany, Paris, and the United States, until he finally settled in Toronto, where he continued writing and taught Ukrainian literature at Universite de Montreal. Natalia Gerken-Rusova (1897 - 1989) was a journalist, graphic designer, scenographer, and theater and film artist.

(Mission, B.C., Canada): Barbarian Press, 2025. cord-tied hand-made paper wrappers. Barbarian Press. 4to. cord-tied hand-made paper wrappers. unpaginated. Loose Canons One. Second edition. Limited to 120 copies. A fine copy. This title, in a much slighter form, was first issued in 2014 for inclusion in the CODEX portfolio Alchimie du verbe. It is printed in Van Dijck, hand-set by Lea Sánchez Milde on Zerkall Cream laid paper with Rivoli for display, printed by her and sewn into wraps of St-Armand Canal paper. From the printer's website: "Elinor Wylie is an admirable example of the poets whose work will be included in the series. She was widely read and critically admired during her life, her work bringing a new sharpness of tone and occasionally satirical edge to American poetry. Her imagery is pungent and striking, her subjects intriguingly outside the usual, and her voice commanding without being strident. The title poem adds a pertinent, direct perspective to the American sense of relation to the natural world: where in earlier American poetry nature writing had tended to a presumed human domination as opposed to a stewardship or to a mystical inclination which often transformed natural elements into mere metaphysical phenomena (especially in the Transcendentalists), in Wild Peaches the speaker is only human, and sees nature for what it is, in sensual acceptance.
