Solid Early Edition, bound in marbled paper-covered boards with titles in gilt upon gilt-bordered leather spine labels. Illustrated with hundreds of full-page black & white engravings. Text in French. Includes the scarcer volume 8, the "Secret Museum" that deals in erotica. All volumes square and with generally clean interiors save scattered foxing on prelims. Edges, spine ends and tips rubbed and bumped with some loss to spine ends. Some mild scuffing to spines and boards. Still a quite handsome and very collectable set at a great price. Signed flat by Rush on title page; from Rush's personal library. Shelved in Case 1. Richard Rush was an American statesman, author, editor, and patriot who played a key role with John Quincy Adams and James Monroe in proclaiming the Monroe Doctrine. Rush was U. S. Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, and agent to secure the Smithson Bequest to establish the Smithsonian Institute. He was also the son of Dr. Benjamin Rush, founding father and Surgeon General for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. This volume contains a poem about the Wasp, and letters signed in type print by Commodore William Bainbridge, a U.S. Navy officer who commanded multiple famous naval ships, including the USS Constitution and USS Philadelphia. 1328286.
