Description
Madrid: Imprenta Real, 1779. FIRST EDITION. 235 x 150 mm. (9 1/4 x 6"). 10 p.l., 126, XL pp., [1] leaf (errata). EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY CRIMSON MOROCCO BY DEROME LE JEUNE (his ticket with address of Rue St. Jacques on verso of front free endpaper), covers framed with thick and thin gilt rules, raised bands, spine compartments with central floral sprig surrounded by a lozenge of small tools, volute cornerpieces, gilt titling, gilt-rolled turn-ins, gilt edges, cobalt blue paste-paper endpapers. WITH SIX CHARMING ENGRAVED ALLEGORICAL PLATES after G. Ferre. Front pastedown with morocco bookplate of Mortimer L. Schiff and small book label with a gilt cipher on a red peach. A Large Paper Copy. Palau y Dulcet IV, 107; RSIM B VI, 429; MGG VI, 1403 f.; Gregory-Bartlett I, 129. Three minute dents to front board, a hint of wear to bands and corners, isolated faint foxing, blank recto of frontispiece leaf and blank verso of final leaf with faint blue shadown from endpapers, but all of these quite trivial, and otherwise A BEAUTIFUL COPY--fresh, clean, and bright internally, with very wide margins and strong impressions of the plates, and in a lustrous binding showing with few signs of use. This is surely one of the handsomest poetical treatises on music ever produced, and it is offered here in a binding done by one of the finest craftsmen working in Europe during the period of the book's publication. The work is written in the "silva" form of poetry used by persons of high rank, illustrated with fine engravings, and put into elegant morocco by the finest hands among the large Derome family of binders. According to Palau, our first edition is "beautiful, and printed on fine paper." He says further that, although the strongly expressed opinions of the youthful author on contemporary composers caused the work to be "unfairly attacked," it was "appreciated by professors of music and collectors of literature in that genre," especially in Italy and America. A child of the Enlightenment, Iriate (1750-91) gained entry to intellectual and artistic circles in Madrid through his uncle, who was librarian to the king of Spain. He translated works by Horace and Virgil into Spanish by royal request, and wrote criticism, poetry, and dramas. He is best known for his satirical fables on the contemporary literary scene, "Fábulas literarias." There were no fewer than 18 members of the Derome family who made their livings as binders in Paris from the middle of the 17th century until the first quarter of the 19th, but by far the most distinguished family member was Nicolas-Denis, called "le jeune" (1731-88). Known for the gracefulness of his bindings, and for being capable of "amazing delicacy" (in Hobson's words), Derome le jeune was, simply, the leading binder of the day, and his work was much in demand. Because he refused to turn away customers, Derome was forced to hire a number of assistants, whose work he could not always supervise closely. However, Thoinan says that the binder's best work is indicated by the presence of his ticket, as here. The volume's provenance adds to its luster: it was in the distinguished library of American bibliophile Mortimer Schiff (1877-1931). In Dickinson's words, Schiff, a financier and philanthropist, Schiff "brought together an unrivaled collection of decorative bindings." His library included works by great printers, important illustrated books, and works printed on vellum, but chiefly fine and historic bindings. The "Reliures" database of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France commends Schiff for assembling "one of the most important inter-war libraries," noting that his collection was "renowned for its collection of French bindings.".

Burdeos [Bourdeaux]: Carlos Lawalle Sobrino, 1832. 8vo, full calf, 598 [2] pp. Chips to head of spine, ex-libris stamp to preliminary page, text block fine, very good to near fine overall. Very Good. A nice first edition copy of Tadeo Ortiz’s second historical work, written during his time as Consul in Bourdeaux and printed in Bourdeaux after he had returned to America to work as official commissioner in Texas. Ortiz advocated free trade and was in support of colonization in the northern frontier. “This idealistic statesman approved of free trade for his country, although he also believed in government subsidization of economic development. He showed a remarkable interest in the geographical aspects of the economy. Though he never played an important role in the Mexican party struggles of his age, he searched and gained support mainly among such conservative politicians as Manuel de Mier y Terán.” - Texas State Historical Association. Description
[Various locations including Wyoming, Nebraska, and Iowa], 1919. Very good plus.. Forty-two original black-and-white photographs and real photo postcards, most with manuscript annotations, bound into a two-ring leather binder. Two additional postcards laid in. Minor occasional dust soiling, but overall in excellent shape. An intriguing pocket-sized binder containing a collection of photographs and real photo postcards documenting large-scale construction projects in the American West, mostly involving concrete projects such as dams, drainage, reservoir infrastructure, railroads, and more between about 1913 to 1920. All of the projects occur on or west of the Mississippi River, in locations such as Keokuk, Iowa; Ardmore, South Dakota; Grand Island, Nebraska; and Arminto, Wyoming. The projects cover a wide range of subject matter, from a simple base for a railroad mail sack crane to entire dam wall construction, and seem to feature several involving sprayable concrete, commonly known as gunite. This material was rather new in the 1910s, but is still widely in use to the present day. The majority of the images are captioned in manuscript, identifying the project or location or often both. These include a power-generating dam in Keokuk; reinforcement of a reservoir dam near Lysite, Wyoming; widening of a cut for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad through Arminto; memorializing a concrete crib wall for the same railroad at the Bancroft St. Vincent Omaha; the installation of an eighteen-inch wall casting and sinking the Kelly well in Grand Island; documenting frost action on a brick chimney and water tank and also picturing a "concrete gun" in Worland, Wyoming; and others. The images are organized into two sections with small tabs, one reading "Dams" and the other "Miscellan." The compiler of the pictures is not identified, but he or she was most likely involved in the operational aspects of the construction projects. One of the captions is initialed at the bottom, "JRH," which may help scholars identify the compiler with further research. The binder itself was produced in Kansas City, which may be an additional clue to the compiler's identity. A small but focused collection featuring major western construction projects from the early-20th century.

Description
folio, two pages, old folds, some dust soiling and tanning, else in very good, legible condition. "Gent of the Washington Benevolent Society, permit me to call your serious attention to a few observations … I presume you are all acquainted with the principles of this Society … Our great object is to support and promote Charity, Morality, Benevolence and an Union of sentiment; but more especially to preserve inviolate the true principles of our Federal Republican Government. Some of our members have asserted and tried by the dint of argument to make it appear that we are not a political body, and that politicks ought not to enter our sacred walls or have any influence on our political principles. I am sorry to say gentlemen that these are the sentiments of our former President, which has greatly injured the reputation and honour of our society – his openly avowing this to be his candid conception of our Institution, at one of the stated meetings will always be remembered with the deepest regret. What person who understands common language can or will pretend to deny that we are not a political society; does not the principle object of our Institution declare that we must preserve inviolate the true principles of our Federal Republican government - … does not this prove that our very existence depends on our politicks. I say every person before he can be admitted a member of this society must give ample proof to our executive committee of the purity of his Federal Republican principles. …. Gentlemen our country now loudly calls for the immediate and united efforts of this society to exert her utmost endeavours, consistent with our constitution, to save her from that inevitable ruin to which she is now verging. Three days from this time will determine the destiny of our country; and if our opponents should succeed, we may bid our happiness, our liberty and Independence adieu; we will then be no longer permitted to assemble within these walls … no more will we dare to express our sentiments with freedom on the situation of our country, but we will basely have to submit to the friends and admirers of that Invincible and bloodthirsty Corsican Tyrant, whose very breath spreads death and carnage. Ye patriots of seventy six who fought the battles of your country and obtained a glorious Liberty and Independence let me earnestly entreat you to come forward and assert your rights, go to the polls and deposit the pledge of your freedom – And you their offspring; I charge you solemnly to be upon your guard; for there are many snares laid to entrap you, but arise be awake to their wiles and deceit. Remember that you are the sons of freemen and members of the Washington Society – that liberty and equality is your creed that you were bred up in this way when young and that you will not now depart from it… James Voorhees" The Washington Benevolent Societies were grass-roots political clubs set up 1808-1816 by the Federalist Party in the U.S. to electioneer for votes. As shown on the membership certificates printed within copies of "Washington's Farewell Address" that were issued to members, the first of these societies was "instituted in the City of New York, on the 12th day of July, 1808." The President of that first Society was Isaac Sebring, and Secretary was G. C. Verplanck (perhaps Guilan Crommelin Verplanck, Sr.). Societies were also formed in Rhode Island in 1810, as the threat of warfare loomed. Citing a July 6, 1812 edition of the "Federalist" newspaper in New Jersey, it has been reported that: "Coinciding with the first state peace convention, the initial public appearance of the Washington Benevolent Society in New Jersey occurred in Trenton on July 4, 1812." The Washington Benevolent Society helped pioneer electioneering techniques in a democracy. "The promise of participation in the parade and receipt of the badge of the Society had been used as part of the Trenton Society's membership drive, for the Federalists were interested in gaining as many members as possible."[6] Ribbon badges with George Washington's portrait and the words "Pro Patria" ("For Country") printed on silk or vellum were issued to members of the Societies. "Silk ribbons bearing Washington's portrait issued by the society are among the earliest mass-produced partisan objects in American political history." Into the Age of Jackson, an oration on Washington's birthday, February 22, was commonly delivered before the Washington Benevolent Societies in various states, and sometimes it would be printed.
