In publisher's unclipped dust jacket. Cloth with some minor spotting, and spine somewhat faded. Internally very clean. Small bookseller label on front free endpaper. Dust jacket with some minor browning. Some closed tears to head and tail of the spine, but with no loss. Overall very good. "Born in Annapolis, Maryland, James Thorne Smith had a brief but prolific career as a best-selling comic novelist. He began his working years as an advertising copy-writer, but soon turned to fiction writing. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1917 and worked as an editor and writer for The Broadside, a newspaper for enlisted men. His stories about an inept serviceman, Biltmore Oswald, became wildly popular among the magazine's readers. After the war, he moved to Greenwich Village, where he became friends with writers such as Sinclair Lewis and had a brief affair with Dorothy Parker. He continued to work in advertising while trying to succeed as a poet. After marrying in 1919, he and his wife frequently visited the experimental community of Free Acres in nearby New Jersey. In 1926, he achieved sudden literary stardom when his comic supernatural novel Topper was published to great success." (Harry Ransom Center). "The Night Life of the Gods (1931) depicts the unrestrainable debauchery of the gods of classical mythology that is unleashed when statues in the Metropolitan Museum of Art are brought to life... In 1933 Smith also traveled to Hollywood to write dialogue for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. His own novels became the basis for a number of screenplays. Night Life of the Gods appeared in 1935, directed by Lowell Sherman for Universal Studios." (American Dictionary of National Biography). Irina Elenevskaia was born at the end of the 19th century in a prominent family - grandfather was prominent orientalist V. D. Smirnov and her father was a high-ranking official of the Imperial Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her family fled to Finland after the Revolution. The main purpose of her book was, in her own words, to describe the life and stories of Russian immigrants in the Scandinavian countries and specifically those in Finland and Sweden as many works had been written by and about Russian exiles in Germany, France, and the US and hardly any had appeared about her compatriots in her new home country. Utilizing her own memories and recollections, as well as notes and materials from fellow immigrants, Elenevskaia created a beautiful and compelling story of pre-Revolution life in St Petersburg, life in Finland, and life in Sweden.

Leaflet - 6 x 5; pp. [4]; light, horizontal crease line; small manuscript note by the editor to upper margin of pp. 1; very good or better condition. Ellen "Ella" Augusta Bigelow (1849 - 1917) was an author, historian, and editor of "Mizpah" journal. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and wrote her current playlet as an "entertainment of financial result beneficial to our Chapter." The first page announced that all guests and members were advised to bring their pocket-books, as mystery-prize boxes, colored eggs with written fortunes, boxes of candy, etc. would be offered at ten cent apiece. The small leaflet, with an explanatory manuscript note by the editor, was a supplement to another one-acter by Bigelow, which she completed in 1899.

Washinington, DC, 1937. Unbound. Very good. One-page handbill (approximately 9" x 11.5") formatted to appear like a page from the Congressional Record. Storage folds, some beginning to split at the margin. Clean with some light toning. This handbill provides the text of Jenckes's speech in the House of Representatives on 6 December 1937 advocating for a Union Shop to be imposed upon the Woodward & Lothrop Department Store in Washington, DC in lieu of the long-established Company Union that represented its workers. In the speech, she additionally complained that Painter's Union No. 368, who wished to represent the workers, was unable to get newspaper coverage because Woodies was one of the largest advertising buyers in the District. Jenckes was the first female from Indiana to serve in the U.S. House of Representative. She was elected to the position in 1933 and held the position until she was defeated for re-election in 1938. The National Women's History Museum notes that "A Democrat, her reputation among farmers led to her victory in the landslide election of 1932. . . . Her election, however was truly extraordinary: because of re-districting, she had to defeat incumbents in both the Democratic primary and the general election. With her daughter driving the car, she traveled the rural Sixth District and rallied farm families to her side." After she was defeated in 1938, Jenckes continued to live in Washington, DC and worked for the American Red Cross. Her efforts, however, on behalf of Painter's Union No. 368 were to no avail. Woodies employees remained content with their Company Union for the next 37 years until finally opting to join Retail Store Employees Union Local 400 in 1970.
