Description
London: Taylor and Francis, 1897. Full Description: THOMSON, Sir Joseph John. Cathode Rays. [In]: The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science. Being a Continuation of Tilloch's 'Philosophical Magazine,' Nicholson's 'Journal,' and Thomson's 'Annals of Philosophy.' Conducted by Lord Kelvin, LL.D. F.R.S. &c. George Francis Fitzgerald, M.A. Sc.D. F.R.S. and William Francis, Ph.D. F.L.S. F.R.A.S. F.C.S. 'Fifth Series. No 269- October 1897. With one plate. Illustrative of Prof. D.B. Brace's paper on Oberservations on Light Propagated in a Dielectric Normal to the lines of Force. London: Taylor and Francis, October, 1897. First edition. Octavo (8 7/16 x 5 9/16 inches; 215 x 142 mm). 293-368 pp. Thomson's article on Cathode rays comprised pages 293-316 with six black and white line-drawings, some numerical charts and equations. Along this article are eight other articles and one engraved plate. Publisher's original blue printed wrappers, neatly rebacked to style. Edges speckled red. We could find no other copy in the original wrappers at auction. An about fine copy. This was the first of Thomson's papers on the discovery of sub-atomic particles. "It was reserved for J.J. Thomson (knighted in 1908) to discover the true nature of the cathode rays. In April 1897 he gave a public demonstration at one of the Friday evening discourses at the Royal Institute in which he declared that cathode rays are composed of particles of sub-atomic proportions. At this stage, he had been unable to calculate the weight of the particles, but he had measured their rate of charge to mass. The ratio was large, so they must either have a big charge or a small mass. Thomson gave reasons for preferring the latter-from experiments performed by Kenard in particular. If the charge could be calculated, then the mass could be found, since the ratio between the two was known, Thomson eventually succeeded in calculating the charge, by an ingenious adaptation of the 'dust counter' devised by C.T.R. Wilson. Thomson substituted for the dust particles counted by Wilson the cathode-ray particles. By observing variations in their fall in various electric fields he was able to calculate the electric charge of the particles. These experiments, later perfected by Millikan, led to the calculation of the mass of the electron as one eighteen-hundredth of a hydrogen atom, hitherto the lightest known object. Moreover the mass of these 'corpuscles', as Thomson called them, was constant, whatever their origin. That is to say that all forms of matter, no matter how varied their chemical composition, produced cathode rays of uniform make-up... Although he still preferred as late as 1907 'corpuscle' to 'electron' to describe this ultimate particle, Thomson has provided experimental proof of the theoretical speculation of Lorentz. In doing so he had revolutionized the science of physics. The 'indestructible' atom was no more and it began to seem likely that the common constituent of all matter was a form of energy. Thomson's discovery opened up new fields of investigation in almost every branch of physics..." (PMM 386). Printing and the Mind of Man 386. HBS 68815. $4,500.

Description
5 volumes: volume 1 Texto: xx+607 pages with frontispiece, portraits, illustrations, facsimiles, maps and plates; volume 2 Documentos: 552 pages; volume 3 Vida de Ercilla: 337 pages with portraits, illustrations and index; volumes 4-5 Illustrations: 512 pages with facsimile titles to the first publications; 559 pages with facsimile signatures, plates and index. Folio (15" x 10 3/4") with original wrappers bound in to cloth binding. Compiled and arranged by Jose Toribio Medina. First edition.La Araucana is an epic poem in Spanish about the Spanish conquest of Chile, by Alonso de Ercilla; it is also known in English as The Araucaniad. It was considered the national epic of the Kingdom of Chile and one of the most important works of the Spanish Golden Age (Siglo de Oro). The poem consists of 37 cantos that are distributed across the poem's three parts. The first part was published in 1569; the second part appeared in 1578, when it was published with the first part; the third part was published with the first and second parts in 1589. The poem shows Ercilla to be a master of the octava real, the complicated stanza in which many other Renaissance epics in Castilian were written. A difficult eight-line unit of 11-syllable verses that are linked by a tight rhyme scheme, the octava real was a challenge few poets met. It had been adapted from Italian only in the 16th century, and it produces resonant, serious-sounding verse that is appropriate to epic themes. The work describes the initial phase of the Arauco War which was born as a Spanish conquests attempt, not at all comparable in importance to those of Hernán Cortés, who helped conquer the Aztec empire, and Francisco Pizarro, who initiated the overthrow the Inca empire. Contrary to the epic conventions of the time, however, Ercilla placed the lesser conquests of the Spanish in Chile at the core of his poem, because the author was a participant in the conquest and the story is based on his experiences there. On scraps of paper in the lulls of fighting, Ercilla jotted down versified octaves about the events of the war and his own part in it. These stanzas he later gathered together and augmented in number to form his epic. It was the first poem of its kind written by a participant in the course of the events narrated and the first to immortalize the beginnings of a modern country. In the minds of the Chilean people La Araucana is a kind of Iliad that exalts the heroism, pride, and contempt of pain and death of the legendary Araucanian leaders and makes them national heroes today. Thus we see Ercilla appealing to the concept of the "noble savage," which has its origins in classical authors and took on a new lease of life in the renaissance - c.f. Montaigne's essay Des Canibales, and was destined to have wide literary currency in European literature two centuries later. He had, in fact, created a historical poem of the war in Chile which immediately inspired many imitations.La Araucana is deliberately literary and includes fantastical elements reminiscent of medieval stories of chivalry. The narrator is a participant in the story, at the time a new development for Spanish literature. Influences include Orlando furioso by Ludovico Ariosto. Also features extended description of the natural landscape. La Araucana's successes—and weaknesses—as a poem stem from the uneasy coexistence of characters and situations drawn from Classical sources (primarily Virgil and Lucan, both translated into Spanish in the 16th century) and Italian Renaissance poets (Ludovico Ariosto and Torquato Tasso) with material derived from the actions of contemporary Spaniards and Araucanians. The mixture of Classical and Araucanian motifs in La Araucana often strikes the modern reader as unusual, but Ercilla's turning native peoples into ancient Greeks, Romans, or Carthaginians was a common practice of his time. For Ercilla, the Araucanians were noble and brave—only lacking, as their Classical counterparts did, the Christian faith. Caupolicán, the Indian warrior and chieftain who is the protagonist of Ercilla's poem, has a panoply of Classical heroes behind him. His valour and nobility give La Araucana grandeur, as does the poem's exaltation of the vanquished: the defeated Araucanians are the champions in this poem, which was written by one of the victors, a Spaniard. Ercilla's depiction of Caupolicán elevates La Araucana above the poem's structural defects and prosaic moments, which occur toward the end when Ercilla follows Tasso too closely and the narrative strays from the author's lived experience. Ercilla, the poet-soldier, eventually emerges as the true hero of his own poem, and he is the figure that gives the poem unity and strength. The story is considered to be the first or one of the first works of literature in the New World (cf. Cabeza de Vaca's Naufragios—Shipwrecked or Castaways) for its fantastical/religious elements, it is arguable whether that is a "traveler's account" or actual literature; and Bernal Díaz del Castillo's Historia verdadera de la conquista de Nueva España (The Conquest of New Spain). La Araucana's more dramatic moments also became a source of plays. But the Renaissance epic is not a genre that has, as a whole, endured well, and today Ercilla is little known and La Araucana is rarely read except by specialists and students of Spanish and Latin American literatures, and of course in Chile, where it is subject of special attention in the elementary schools education both in language and history. La Araucana makes Chile the only American country that was founded under the lights of an epic poem. Condition:Bound in red cloth with original wrappers bound in. Volume one first 15 pages closed tear at heal repaired, back page fore edge repaired. A very good set.

Description
London: Humphrey Milford / Oxford University Press, n.d.. Hardcover. Very good. Oblong folio, [80] pp. Information on Chloe Preston (1887-1969) seems a bit elusive; from various online sources we gleen that she was born in Britain in 1887, "in a gentrified English country environment". Her charming illustrations of the Peek-a-Boos have "clear simple outlines and bright colours, [and] her humorous images portray simple excursions and activities" (n.b., quotes from the web site of the Antique Print Club). Chloe Preston provided the illustrations for twelve "Peek-A-Boo" books (per Baumgarten). In this work, Preston follows the adventures of the Peek-A-Boos as they "winter" in the countryside, attending "shoots", riding horses to the "hunt", and more. ___DESCRIPTION: Paper-covered boards with red cloth spine, the front board with both the lettering and the colour illustration raised (bas-relief style), gold lettering stamped onto the spine, colour frontispiece one of eighteen full-page colour illustrations throughout printed on rectos only, all text also printed on rectos only; oblong folio size (13 1/4" wide by 8 5/8" tall), [80] pp., note that page count does not include the colour illustrations. ___CONDITION: Overall very good, with a strong square text block with solid hinges, the interior illustrations bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some minor soiling to the boards, the board edges and corners rubbed, offsetting to the free endpapers, the front pastedown shows the indentations from the front board having been debossed to create the bas-relief effect, we noted one leaf with a short closed tear (nicely repaired by a prior owner), and a few scattered spots of light foxing throughout. Even with its faults, a very good, solid copy. ___CITATION: For the true (published by H. Frowde) first, see Baumgarten, Artist, p. 160. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an unusually large and heavy volume and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. First printing, one of 1500 copies, octavo size, 136 pp. Eric Gill (1882-1940) and Douglas Pepler (1878-1951) worked together for many years, founding the St Dominic's Press and creating numerous splendid works of art and writing. This collection of essays takes a look at the society of the time, examining the relationships among people, situations of work, and the effects of the Industrial Revolution. Eric Gill provides woodcuts to illustrate the text, several full-page images and several in-text; with a simplistic approach to detail, Gill creates scenes of both acute observation and satire. ___DESCRIPTION: Custom binding in half-green leather with marbled paper over boards, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page silhouette woodcut by Eric Gill with other cuts throughout the text; octavo size (8" x 5 1/4"), pagination: [i-vi] vii-viii, 1-123 [124-128], one of 1500 copies. ___CONDITION: Very good overall, the leather is smooth and supple, the marbled boards are clean and unrubbed, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the text pages clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; we are grading as very good due to soiling and a small area of old dampstaining on the half title, and the the text block edges (particularly the fore- and bottom edges which are uncut), show uniform soiling. ___CITATION: Bibliography of Eric Gill 259. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
1917. Very Good. True First World War Trench Art, made of salvaged pieces of metal found in the trenches. 9 cm diameter at its base, almost 5 cm tall at the tallest -- from the base to the peak of the visor. With two rounded pieces screwed in at opposite sides to act as a cigarette holder. Cigarettes were precious currency during the war, and soldiers generally smoked to ease the stress and tedium of the battlefield. This clever ashtray bears the date of September '17, and on its side incised is Cambrai, the location of bloddy battles in both 1917 and 1918, another name which we can't fully make out, and the date, 1919, the significance of which we do not know. We date the ashtray to 1917, but it certainly could have been done the following year, or conceivably after the Armistice, but there is no question it is "Folk Art" spawned by the Great War.

[PRE-ORDER] Published on the occsion of the retrospective held March 1 - May 19, 2019 at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, MASP and in June 28 - October 27, 2019 at the Instituto Casa Roberto Marinho, in Rio de Janeiro. Most comprehensive monograph dedicated to Djanira da Motta e Silva (Avaré, São Paulo, 1914 - Rio de Janeiro, 1979) since her death forty years ago. The title "Djanira: The Memory of Her People" - borrowed from a 1970s story by Mary Ventura - refers to the artist's trajectory, her life story and her many trips through Brazil, as well as her painting based on daily life, landscapes and Brazilian popular culture, around subjects often marginalized by elites. This exhibition includes works from all periods of Djanira's production, from the early 1940s to the late 1970s, and follows a chronological order while bringing together works from the artist's main themes: portraits and self-portraits, popular fun and celebrations, work and workers, Afro-Brazilian and Catholic religiosity, the indigenous Canela do Maranhão, among diverse Brazilian peoples and landscapes.
