Description
[Haverhill, MA, 1870. Broadside, 8.75" x 19.25", printed in three columns, laid down on paper. Age toned, untrimmed, light scattered spotting. Old horizontal folds, affecting legibility of portions of a few lines of text. Signed in type and dated at the end, March 22, 1870. Good. This is the will of Sylvanus Brown of Windham, New Hampshire, formerly of Derry. In addition to leaving property to family and friends, he left Derry a substantial sum of money, to be "kept under bonds with good sureties" and to be used for the town's interests, including the purchase of flannel for the destitute people of the town, in "picking the small stones from the public highways," and towards the purchasing of "good native nuts and cider, to be kept in the care of said boards, in good condition, and impartialy offered as cheer at the next Bi-Centennial Celebration" in 1919. Brown was the author of 'The Rejected Poem of A.D. 1869', a copy of which is at the website of the University of New Hampshire Library. The poem's introduction states that the poem is to be "conserved for use at the Bicentennial on Derry Common, A.D. 1919" and mentions the distribution of the nuts and cider. Not located on OCLC as of February 2017.
