Description
Cobh, Ireland; New York City, Jersey City, Pennsylvania, and Niagara Falls, 1886. Single photo album of thirty-two 9 ½ x 11 inch pages, with twenty-nine photographs and four hand-drawn illustrations. Photographs range from 4 ¼ x 7 inch to 7 x 9 inch. Photographs mostly with fine contrast and in near fine to fine condition; illustrations in fine condition; some chipping at the corners of pages; binding of album broken. Overall near fine.. Offered here is an album of photographs belonging to an Irish tourist who visited New York City from April to June 1886, several years before the construction of the city’s first skyscraper, the Tower Building. The photographs are of a nearly unrecognizable city – one shows cows grazing in an open field under an elevated rail line at 110th street in Harlem. Three show various skylines from the recently completed Brooklyn Bridge, including a shot of lower Manhattan from one of the bridge’s towers. Six others are also of lower Manhattan, with one of the widely unpopular City Hall Post Office and Courthouse, which was finished in 1880 and demolished in 1939. Eight show midtown architecture, including the Albemarle Hotel (1860–1915), Hoffman House (1864–1915), Windsor Hotel (1873–1899), and Vanderbilt House (1883–1926). A number of shots show what transit was like at the time; especially the elevated railway lines, but also a ferry in the Hudson River, Grand Central Depot, and the Pennsylvania Railroad’s depot in Jersey City, bridge over the Susquehanna River, and train going around the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona. The illustrations are of what is likely a family crest, American flag designs, and the flag of the White Star Line, a steamer service which the tourist likely took from Cobh to New York and back. Overall an uncommon and visually compelling record of a tourist trip to New York City in an era preceding larger tourism booms.

Description
[Italy], Sixteenth century.. Good with some modest surface abrasion and minor loss to a part of the applied stitched strapwork decoration; some light fading (?) of original color in the thread of the portrait.. Embroidered panel measuring appx. 454 x 570 mm. Apparels such as this were produced throughout Italy. The work would have been undertaken by a number of people to do the background, portrait, and decorative elements. A variety of thread was used. The piece is quite heavy, indicating the use of metallic wire wrapped around silk thread. The border frame (outermost perimeter) is entirely metal wire thread. Color dyed silk thread is used in the portrait in order to effect "depth" and realism and to accomplish the figure's modelling. It is assumed that the subject is St. Anthony of Egypt given the cross that accompanies the figure. The strapwork (foliate) ornamentation is first seen in Islamic manuscripts and artwork; taken up in Italy where it was used in an array of decorative arts eventually to spread throughout Europe.

Description
Giessen: By the author, 1948. Softcover. Typed, loose sheets; pp. [8], recto only; light age-toning; a few carbon paper smudges; very good to near fine condition. Also included is a photo of Leontovich, with a short inscription and an unidentified signature, dated 1949 in Giessen. Mykola Leontovich (1877 - 1921) was a Ukrainian composer, educator, and choral conductor. Inspired by the Ukrainian Nationalist Music School, Leontovich would become known worldwide as "The Ukrainian Bach," for his cappella choral music and for his liturgy - the first one composed in the modern Ukrainian language. During the period immediately after the October Revolution, he moved with his family to Kiev, where he taught at the Mykola Lysenko Institute of Music and Drama and co-organized the first Ukrainian State Orchestra. On the night of January 22-23, 1921, while at his parents' house in Tulchyn for Christmas, Leontovich was shot and killed by Chekist (Soviet state security) agent Afanasy Grishchenko, presumably for his involvement in the Ukrainian Independence Movement. The speech, presented to refugees at a DP camp in Giessen, commemorated the death of the beloved composer.

Description
Washington, D.C., 1852. Broadside, 8" x 12.5". Printed with some manuscript notations and changes. Light old folds, some tanning along folds. Signed in type by John M. Clarke. Very Good. Clarke twice made manuscript changes to the date on this solicitation, originally printed as September 1st, 1852-- to Dec. 29 and then January 13, 1853. He also changed by hand the printed prices. Clarke lists twenty references, including Judges, Senators, Congressmen, Governors. Congress awarded Bounty Land Warrants in return for veterans' military service, beginning with the Revolutionary War and continuing through the late 1850s. The land warrants, which could be exchanged for land titles, were freely transferable and from time to time were objects of avid speculation. Not located on OCLC, but several examples were located on line.
