Moderate staining and a few small holes and separations aided by conservation. Scattered contemporary manuscript notations. An exceptionally rare Texas secession broadside, executed on silk satin in San Antonio in 1861. Printed in five columns with an ornamental border, the broadside features both the Ordinance of Secession and the Declaration of Causes, two of the three principal documents drafted by the Texas Secession Convention, along with a list of delegates. According to the colophon, "These sheets on Fine Satin may be had at the Herald Office for $1, or on fine Book Paper at 10 cents each." The present broadside belonged to Cyrus Halbert Randolph (1817-1889), who was the Texas State Treasurer at the time of secession. Randolph arrived in Texas in March 1838 and quickly became established as an attorney and politician. A member of the Snively Expedition in 1843, he served in several political roles in Houston County, including justice of the peace (1840), chief justice of the county (circa 1843), and sheriff (1847). He also represented the county in the Texas Legislature in two terms between November 1851 and November 1857. Randolph was elected state treasurer 1859, and won re-election in 1860. Notably, small pencil notations are next to the names of several delegates in the list, perhaps associates of Randolph. Other known copies have connections to delegates, and it seems likely that the sheets printed "on Fine Satin" were ideal souvenirs for prominent Texas politicians. After South Carolina's secession in December 1860, Texas was not far behind in joining them. The Constitutional Convention was organized on February 1, 1861, and voted overwhelmingly in favor of secession. The ordinance was ratified by popular vote on February 23rd. The document begins with the Declaration of Causes, a fiery assertion of Texas's rights, which highlights her unique history as an independent country and leaves no doubt as to the core issue at stake: "Texas abandoned her separate national existence and consented to become one of the Confederated States to promote her welfare, insure domestic tranquility and secure more substantially the blessings of peace and liberty to her people. … She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery -- the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits -- a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time. Her institutions and geographical position established the strongest ties between her and other slave-holding States of the confederacy. Those ties have been strengthened by association. But what has been the course of the government of the United States, and of the people and authorities of the non-slave-holding States, since our connection with them?" Continuing in scathing language, the authors accuse the North of interfering directly as they "encouraged and sustained lawless organizations to steal our slaves;" "invaded Southern soil and murdered reoffending citizens;" "sent seditious pamphlets and papers among us to stir up servile insurrection and bring blood and carnage to our fireside;" "sent hired emissaries among us to burn our towns and distribute arms and poison to our slaves;" and, "finally, by the combined sectional vote of the seventeen free or non-slave-holding States, they have elected as President and Vice President of the whole Confederacy, two men whose chief claims to such high positions, is their approval of these long continued wrongs, and their pledges to continue them to the final consummation of these schemes for the ruin of the slaveholding States." What follows is a list of the 168 delegates ending with Philip A. Work, distinguishing this copy as a first edition. Noted bibliographer and Texas historian Everett C. Wilkie, Jr. made a detailed study of the Texas secession documents in The 1861 Printings of the Ordinance of Secession (Dallas, 2011), and identifies three separate editions of the broadside, essentially differentiated by the list of delegates. The first edition (Wilkie 23) was almost certainly printed in February 1861 and ends the delegate list with Philip A. Work. The later editions (Wilkie 24 & 25) were printed in early and mid-March, respectively, with additional delegates added to the list. The present edition is also the only one to include six lines naming the delegates who voted against secession. Printed in the right-hand column is the Ordinance of Secession, stating the Texas is once again "a separate sovereign state." The preamble encapsulates the grievances of the state, "Whereas the action of the Northern States of the Union is violative of the compact between the States and the guarantees of the Constitution, and whereas the recent developments in Federal affairs make it evident that the power of the Federal Government is sought to be made a weapon with which to strike down the interests and prosperity of the people of Texas and her sister slave-holding states; instead of permitting it to be, as was intended, our shield against outrage and aggression; therefore...." Parrish & Willingham note three institutional copies: University of North Carolina, University of Texas, and Baylor University. The Baylor, copy, however, is actually a 7-page pamphlet edition (Parrish & Willingham 4150). The UNC and Texas are therefore the only other known copies of the first edition. A few fold separations, varying levels of toning and wear, but most documents in good or better condition. An informative collection of correspondence and business material documenting the family life and commercial activities of John O. Collins, a Virginia-based lawyer. The collection is comprised of over forty manuscript letters from Collins to his children, a few to other family members, his business card reading, "John O. Collins, Scottsville, Va.," and over fifty business letters and documents, mostly from Texas. All but one of Collin's forty-two letters to his children are written on one side of a postcard, and date between 1890 and 1910. Collins sent these letters to his "Dear Children" in Fork Union, Fluvanna County, Virginia from various locations around Virginia, namely Prospect, Farmville, and Sheppards. He writes in pinched handwriting, about twenty-five lines per postcard, and reports on his health, family news, the agricultural products of Virginia, and more. The archive also includes numerous letters sent to Collins and his wife from friends or business associates in Texas. These letters are dated between 1854 and 1885. Most of these letters were written to Collins from A.P. Bagby, an attorney and land agent in Bonham; Collins' uncle John Laurie, living in Robertson County, Texas; and J.G. Kearby, an attorney in Wells Point, Van Zandt County, Texas. In one letter, Bagby speaks of missing Collins living in Texas. In another letter, Bagby spends a few pages detailing his recent trip to Galveston to serve as a delegate to the state's Democratic Convention. In another, Bagby describes a recent "barbecue" with "a great abundance of the finest roast meat" and other foods and drinks. In yet another, Bagby writes about assuming the editorship of a newspaper called The North Texas Enterprise, brags about the local vegetable crop, and states that he believes Collins will some day return to the Lone Star State. Bagby also writes letters to "Mrs. C.E. Collins," either John's wife or sister. In these letters, as well, Bagby writes much about his family and life in Texas, which he refers to in one letter as "the best country on the green earth." There are also a few letters to Collins written by his uncle John Laurie of Robertson County, Texas, dated between 1854 and 1860. Laurie writes about the "good health" of the crops in 1854 and the abundance of crops "for our own consumption and for the emigrants" to Texas. In another letter from 1857, Laurie mentions that he has "passed twenty years on the frontier amongst the wild beasts and savages" and reports that "there is much excitement amongst the people in relation to the comet which some says is to destroy the earth. I fear not that the end of time has yet come." The three letters written to Collins from J.G. Kearby in Wells Point almost exclusively relate to taxes owed by Collins for lands in Texas. The collection also includes a handful of earlier letters written by or to John Collins' forebears Thomas, William, and Zachariah Collins, dated as early as 1837, as well as numerous later receipts and other business documents relating to John O. Collins and his family. Overall, the archive offers a peak into the life and business of a 19th-century businessman from Virginia with additional dealings in Texas, with notable content on Texas in the mid-19th century.

IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION. "In December 1970, Ruscha was invited to produce a photobook in conjunction with the Sonsbeek 71 exhibition in the Netherlands. Wim Beeren, the commissioner of the international festival, chose the location (Stadskanaal-a village in Groningen built along both sides of a straight canal) for the commission, but left the specifics of the project up to Ruscha. Once on site, Ruscha began photographing the facades of the houses along the canal, undoubtedly informed by his panorama of Los Angeles, Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966). The topography of the Dutch village led Ruscha to a different approach, however, and the book is conceptually more performative than the earlier work, inasmuch as it directly encompasses a site-specific action: the artist's journey back and forth across the bridges of the canal, with each trip documented by six photographs, which progress from a distant view to a close-up detail of the house directly across both sides of a given bridge. The oversized horizontal format of the book, with each leaf a gatefold representing the two sequences of photographs made on a single bridge, is also unique in Ruscha's oeuvre. Although the book was supposed to have an open edition, available by mail order, it did not sell well and the printer removed and disposed all extra copies from its warehouse. Dutch Details is thus the rarest of Ruscha's books" with an estimated 200 copies in existence. (The Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY) collection website). RARE FIRST EDITION OFFPRINTS of Gamow and Teller's early papers on cosmology, including "a kind of blueprint" for Gamow's later theory of the Big Bang. In "On the Origin of Great Nebulae," "written jointly with Edward Teller, his friend and colleague at George Washington University, Gamow dealt for the first time explicitly with the Friedmann-Lemaitre equations. The two authors concluded that, 'our theory of nebular formation requires that the velocity of expansion remains nearly constant while the distances between nebulae increase by a factor of 600.' In the last section, they considered the cosmological consequences which they discussed from the form of the fundamental (Friedmann-Lemaitre) equation for the expanding universe as given by Richard Tolman in his important textbook of 1934… [and concluded]: 'Thus in order to understand the formation of great nebulae and to satisfy the condition of continuity at the moment of their separation, it is necessary to accept the hypothesis that space is infinite and ever expanding.' As they noted, this went against the conclusion that Edwin Hubble and Tolman had reached in 1935, namely that the universe must be closed and uncomfortably small. However, Gamow and Teller argued that the discrepancy might be resolved if it was admitted that the absolute luminosities of very distant (hence young) galaxies were higher than those nearer by. This idea was to play an important role in cosmology in the 1950s, but in 1939 it was merely a suggestion that lacked independent support. "Gamow's work with Teller of 1939 was based on the expanding universe but did not presuppose any explosive event in the past, what ten years later would be coined the big bang. All they had to say about the state of the universe before the separation of the nebulae about 1.8 billion years ago was, 'Before that time, space must have been uniformly populated by stars, or by gas molecules, if we suppose that the formation of stars took place after the separation of nebulae.' Although still in the pre-big-bang tradition, the paper was in several respects to serve as a kind of blueprint for Gamow's later contributions to cosmology" (Kox and Eisenstaedt, The Universe of General Relativity). Utility paper stock has toned, and first and last leaves are not without stains. References: Michel, II, p. 274, #5; Carnelos, "I libri da risma," #56a; "Remondini: un editore del settecento" p.307, # 7;BL Italian 17th century, p. 128 (1678 ed.). Venetian laws prevented provincial publishers like Remondini from printing important books or first editions. Despite the restriction, the house of Remondini made a fortune from "libri da risma," popular reading printed on cheap paper and distributed to booksellers in sheets. Such is this little manual on hunting with an arquebus (a sort of match-lock firearm). Apart from extensive instruction on the care and usage of the gun, the volume also includes chapters on the behavior of geese, swans, and land birds, on training dogs for hunting, and on manufacturing pellets in the kitchen. Interestingly, the laudatory verses preceding the text include a long invective in quatrains against the invention of gunpowder!

Bellin (1703-1772) born in Paris and according to Tooley was considered one of the most prominent cartographers of the 18th century in a career that lasted about 50 years. This is a colonial period map that was made after Delisle's map of the Mississippi and Louisiana. There is considerable detail, and the map shows the Louisiana Territory extending from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. The map also shows part of Northern Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and even part of Texas. Some Indian territories, including the Apaches are shown along with some European settlements. [ca. 1845]. 8vo., publisher's diagonally grained blue cloth with an elaborate outer frame stamped in black, inside of which is another elaborate gilt-stamped oval frame (which incorporates part of the black border), inside of which is an oval-shaped picture of soup being served from a large copper pot. This scene has been PRINTED IN COLOR CHROMOLITHOGRAPHY and then pasted in place. The spine is heavily decorated in gilt and black; the rear cover is framed in a black-stamped border. All edges are gilt in a copper-rainbow foil, plain gray endpapers. The binding is signed in gilt (as part of the plaque) by the designer, A. Souze, the binder, LeNègre, and the publisher. A most original (Experimental?) binding combining a variety of techniques to achieve its effects. We have never run across such a combination before.This is one of the many popular children's stories by Dumas père, whose complete works fill 103 volumes in the Calmann-Lévy edition. It is handsomely decorated with numerous wood-engravings by Albert-d'Arnoux Bertall (1820-1882) who made humorous desigsn for Parisian periodicals by the thousands and drew many illustrations for popular editions of the day, including Brillat-Savarin's Physiologie du goût (1848). Several pages faded, else legible; spine broken with wear to cover but contents excellent. Overall very good plus.. A daily journal from 1874 belonging to Ralph C. Hill (1824–1915) of Milford, Massachusetts. Hill mostly remarks on the weather and on his business transactions, but from June to August of 1874 he took a long journey through Iowa and what was then Dakota Territory; then through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario, and Quebec; and home to Massachusetts through Vermont. While on his trip, he notes down having visited several “lodges”, specifically in “Lamarrs” (Le Mars, Iowa), Cherokee, Iowa, and Oakfield, Wisconsin. Hill’s obituary mentions that he was an Odd Fellow[1]: a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternity formed in 1918 out of England’s Order of Odd Fellows. In the Dakotas, Hill visits Flandreau (“Flandro”), Dell Rapids, Sioux Falls (“Sew falls”), and Luverne (“Laverne”). He writes that “the Sew [sic] valley [is] the finest country I ever saw” (July 9). Hill’s travels coincided with Custer’s expedition, which would lead to a gold rush and population boom in the territory; at the time, much of the territory was unexplored by Euro-Americans. Hill did not seem to have transacted much of any business out west, presumably traveling for pleasure, though his diary is terse. Of interest as a document of tourism in the American west.
