Description: Oxford: Henry Daniel, 1899. First thus. Near Fine. Limited to 150 copies, this number 36. Printed in black letter. Finely bound by Zaehnsdorf in a modernist style, likely for exhibition (with their circlular stamp on the rear silk paste-down). Bound in full dark brown crushed morocco. Interwoven rules create a central panel on the front and rear boards, similar, but smaller patterns in the spine panels. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed, ruled inner dentelles, dark brown silk end papers. Spine a bit toned and few bookseller notations to the verso of the front end paper. Clean and fresh throughout. Quarto (leaves 228 x 172), collating: [iv], 64,[x], complete. Feeling that current church music has become to worldly, the late-Victorian poet Robert Bridges was driven to create music that reached for something beyond the realm of man. To achieve his revivalist goals, Bridges collaborated on the project with musical scholar H. Ellis Wooldridge and his wife, the pianist Monica Bridges to write news hymns for their parish church in Yattendon. Even the printing of the hymns reflected 16th century book production and typography transporting the reader to another time and place. The Austro-Hungarian -born, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886) trained with binders in Stuttgart and in Vienna, before moving to Germany, Switzerland, France, and eventually settling London. He working for various shops before opening his own bindery in 1842. In the face of industrializing production Zaehnsdorf embraced craft and eventually gained recognition for his talent. He was known for his precise finish and elegant design. The firm would continue in his son John William's capable hands; it employed binders like Louis Genth, Roger de Coverly, and Sarah Prideaux. Family run until 1947, it was eventually acquired by Asprey of London in 1983 (Gertz). Near Fine.

Description: Engraved allegorical frontis (slightly cropped at outer margin). 3 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 199 pp. 8vo, attractive blue morocco-backed boards, spine lettered in gilt. London: Printed by J. Tonson & J. Watts, 1725/26. The English issue of the sale catalogue of the library of John Bridges (1666-1724), historian of Northamptonshire. Bridges left his fine library to his two brothers, who prepared an inventory catalogue in 1725 for sale. Their efforts were apparently fruitless as the books were sent to auction before the year was out. There are two issues of the present auction catalogue: the English issue with the title in English and a frontispiece, and a second issue with two title-pages, one in Latin and another in French. The continental issue was prepared in order to attract bids from dealers and collectors from Europe. It is generally not recognized that attempts were made by English auctioneers in the early 18th century to generate business from the Continent. Dibdin called Bridges “a notorious book-collector.” The library contained over 4000 books and MSS. It was notably rich in the history and antiquities of Great Britain and Ireland. There was a scandal surrounding the sale as Bridges’s two brothers were quite obviously bidding up the books. Humphrey Wanley, who was a buyer at the sale for Robert Harley’s library, described the sale as “very knavish.” A very good and crisp copy. ❧ D.N.B., II, pp. 1229-30–“the catalogue of his library was long retained as valuable by curious collectors.” Fletcher, English Book Collectors, pp. 156-58. As one leaves, the strips, they grow wider and text is arranged in dynamic layouts, producing a striking visual effect. The artist was the engineer, poet, essayist, writer and sculptor E. M. de Melo e Castro (1932-2020), who was instrumental in the development of experimental poetry in Portugal. His artistic practice was "accompanied by a systematic theorization about language and communication technologies. In his extensive work, multiple practices and experimental forms intersect: the graphic and graphic explosion that combines the fragmentation of the word with the spatialization of alphabetic writing and geometric design; the three-dimensional object-poem and the installation; the intermediate recombination of writing, sound and moving image; the performance that inscribes the author's bodily, vocal and gestural presence in social practices and communication techniques; the theorization of the poem as a device for discourse criticism in the saturated universe of the media" (Manuel Portela, "E.
