Description
London: J. Hassell, 1817. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. Two leather bound volumes with spines in 6 compartments, red labels, gilt titles. Leather rubbed in places, and the upper hinge of volume 2 has been nicely mended, else this is a very good set. As so often happens with early 19th century books the collation of these two volumes matches neither the 'directions for placing the cuts' as found at the end of each volume nor the collation as given in the reference. Numerous plates are bound in locations other than indicated, four listed in Tooley (Epsom, Holland House, Melrose Hall and Guildford) are missing and one (Holland House Crouch) which is not listed in Tooley, but is in the directions to the binder is present. It appears that the intent was that the two volumes were each to have 60 plates. Volume One of this set contains 62 plates and volume Two has 55. Having looked carefully at the two volumes it seems possible that the 'missing' plates were not ever present. A lovely set with charming little plates. .
