AN ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF FROM A BOOK OF HOURS IN LATIN, WITH UNUSUAL HISTORIATED INITIALS FEATURING THE WOUNDS OF CHRIST

Description
Bruges, ca. 1465. 193 x 145 mm. (7 5/8 x 5 3/4"). Single column, 21 lines in a gothic book hand. Rubrics in red, one two-line initial in gold filled with blue on pink ground, WITH THREE LARGE HISTORIATED INITIALS: ONE FEATURING AN OVAL-SHAPED PIECE OF FLESH WITH A GASH IN THE CENTER, AND TWO WITH CHRIST'S DISEMBODIED FOOT, SHOWING THE PUNCTURE WOUND FROM THE CRUCIFIXION, each initial in pink or blue with white tracery, filled with dark pink and thin gilt lines and dots, four wavy blue rays radiating from behind each appendage, all within a thin gilt frame, both sides with a three-quarter border consisting of hairline vines, gold bezants, and a few colorful flowers. ◆Vellum a shade less than bright, faint marginal rumpling, trivial paint transfer on one initial, BUT IN FINE CONDITION, the initials richly painted and extremely well preserved. From a manuscript probably produced in Bruges for the English market, this leaf contains arresting initials that direct the viewer's attention to the wounds endured by Christ during the Passion. According to Roger Wieck, Passion Cycle images enjoyed a particular vogue in 15th century Dutch, Flemish, and English Books of Hours, including those that were exported to England. In the present example, the strikingly unusual imagery includes the wounds of the left and right foot, as well as the spear injury to Christ's side, depicted as an oval piece of flesh with a laceration across the center. A sister leaf to the present item features three additional initials showing a portrait of Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns, his gaze fixed directly at the viewer, and in separate initials his left and right hands appear disembodied and displaying the stigmata. The parent manuscript containing the present leaf sold at Christie's on 15 November 2006 (lot 16), the description for which gives us additional information about the book's contents and provenance: it was made for the Use of Sarum, included a calendar with the English saint Thomas Becket and Popes Gregory and Silvester (with their names crossed out, indicating that it was in England through at least the time of the Reformation), and contained an early ownership inscription of a woman named Bridget Lowe with a Middle English inscription on the pastedown. Christie's also attributed the parent manuscript to the workshop of William Vrelant, with miniatures possibly by his chief assistant, the Master of the "Vraie Cronique Descoce." They note that this work is "of higher quality than many of the works that satisfied the English demand for Netherlandish illumination" and that it "demonstrates why Vrelant appealed to the great bibliophiles of the Burgundian Netherlands." Vrelant was the leading purveyor of books of private devotion in Bruges during the third quarter of the 15th century, and his prominent position among Flemish illuminators of the time is indicated by the considerable number of manuscripts illustrated in his manner by other miniaturists both in Bruges and in nearby cities in Flanders. Similar examples to the present leaf can be found in intact Books of Hours at the Philadelphia Free Library (MS Widener 3) and the Huntington (HM 1086)--both of which were produced in Flanders or the Netherlands around the same time as the present work. The present leaf surpasses both of these examples in terms of excellence of the artistic hand and attention to detail..

Description
Paris: Jouast, Librairie des Bibliophiles, 1880. No. 64 OF 170 LARGE PAPER COPIES on Holland paper, from a total edition of 220. 220 x 138 mm. (8 5/8 x 5 3/8"). Three volumes. Preface by Paul Bourget. MOST ATTRACTIVE NAVY BLUE MOROCCO, GILT, BY STIKEMAN & CO. (stamp-signed on front turn-ins, covers with gilt-ruled frame, oblique fleurons at corners, raised bands, spine compartments intricately gilt, with lancets and volutes emanating from a central rosette, gilt lettering, turn-ins with gilt floral roll, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. With 10 etchings by A. Salmon after Leopold Flemeng. A Large Paper Copy. Short, thin cracks in half of the six joints, isolated faint marginal discoloration or tiny spots of foxing, other trivial internal defects, otherwise very fine--clean and fresh internally, in well-preserved attractive bindings. This is an attractive Large Paper Copy of Scarron's mirror of the slightly seamy side of 17th century French society, offered here in bindings by an important New York firm. "The Comic Novel" follows the picaresque adventures of young Le Destin, who joins a troupe of actors on the road. Prominent among the characters is the diminutive M. Ragotin, who writes dramas for the company and is constantly trapped in absurd imbroglios. The present work was originally published in parts in 1651 and 1657. The author had planned a third part, but died before the work was completed. Paul Scarron (1610-60) was not only known for his prolific output as a novelist, dramatist, and poet, but also for his curious and difficult life. He was severely deformed by what is thought to be polio, endured considerable pain, and, in an effort to find relief, became addicted to opium. Nevertheless, at 42, he married the beautiful young Françoise d'Aubigné, who, after Scarron's death (and by then known as Madame de Maintenon), became Louis XIV's mistress and eventually his morganatic wife. Our three-volume edition of "Comique" was produced by Damase Jouaust, who specialized in luxury printings intended for bibliophiles, issued on special papers, and often with pleasing etchings, as here. This copy is significantly enhanced by its appealing midnight blue bindings. During the period from the retirement of William Matthews to the establishment of the Club Bindery, there was no better binder in America than Henry Stikeman, who exhibited "extraordinary skill . . . in design, inlaying, and tooling." (Maser Collection) Stikeman's firm did high-end publisher's bindings as "bread and butter" work, and luxurious gilt-tooled bindings for collectors. According to Jeff Stikeman, binding expert (and great-great-grandson of Henry's brother George), those bindings signed "Stikeman" or "Stikeman & Co." (as here) are finished by hand and are much preferred to the firm's later blocked bindings, which are signed "Stikeman & Co., NY." (The former were done from 1887 to about 1915, the latter from 1915 to 1939.)..

Description
1902. (London and New York: Harper & Brothers, 1902.) Original dark green cloth with monogram device in gilt. First Edition of Hardy's second volume of verse, which (like the first, WESSEX POEMS), consisted of only 500 copies. None of Hardy's exceedingly scarce multi-volume novels consisted of fewer copies; for example, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE and TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES each had a 1000-copy first edition. This title, actually published in November 1901, contains 99 poems, some of which deal with the Boer War; WESSEX POEMS had contained 51 poems. POEMS OF THE PAST AND THE PRESENT marks the end of Hardy's association with the publishing firm of Osgood, McIlvaine & Co. (and their successors, Harper & Brothers of London, of which Clarence McIlvaine was in charge). This is a near-fine copy (a few minor rear-cover marks, endpapers cracked). In our experience, though both WESSEX POEMS and this title consisted of the same number of copies, this is a considerably scarcer book -- in fact, this is only the fifth copy that we have been able to offer during our forty years in business. Purdy pp 107-119.

New York: Harper, 1886. First Edition. Published Dec. 24, 1886, preceding the London edition of Jan. 1, 1887, though both title pages are dated 1887. Also preceding Munro's pirated edition in wrappers dated Dec. 31, 1886 and Harper's reissue in wrappers. Original publisher's three-quarter cloth (also seen in half cloth) and marbled paper over boards, 8vo (175 x 125mm), pp. vii, 316, plus two color plates inserted. Rubbed and toned, bookplate to the front pastedown, very good. THE imperial adventure novel, a fever dream of Africa in which a Cambridge scholar and his ward discover a lost civilization ruled by a two-thousand-year-old queen who bathes in the pillar of life and destroys what she loves. It has never been out of print, it has been filmed at least seven times, and it remains, after Dracula, the most influential fantasy of the Victorian era, the one that taught an empire to dream about what might be waiting 'for them' in the blank spaces on the map.

Very Good+ in Fair dj
Description
New York: Grosset & Dunlap. [1925] (c.1911). First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Very Good+ in Fair dj. [good sound copy, minor wear to extremities, a little dust-soiling to top of text block; the jacket is heavily worn, missing about 2-1/2 inches from bottom of spine, large chip at left edge of rear panel, small bits of paper loss at several corners, various small tears and creases]. (4 B&W film stills) The first novel by the author who would later achieve lasting fame as the creator of Charlie Chan, this "mystery romance" about a young novelist who sequesters himself in an isolated mountain inn in order to concentrate on writing a novel was a big hit when it first appeared as a newspaper and magazine serial in January 1913. It was published in book form by Bobbs-Merrill the following month, and by September a dramatized version (written and produced by George M. Cohan) had opened on Broadway, where it ran for over a year. Although Cohan had not appeared in the play, he did choose to play the lead in the second film version (also his first movie appearance), released in 1917. (It had been preceded by an Australian film adaptation in 1916.) The present volume is the tie-in with the third film version, starring Douglas MacLean, released by Paramount in 1925; four more film adaptations were to follow (in 1929, 1935, 1947, and 1983, the latter under the title HOUSE OF THE LONG SHADOWS). NOTE that this dust jacket is not the original (movie-themed) version, but rather has been transferred to this copy from a slightly later Grosset & Dunlap printing of the novel. (The jacket can be dated as 1928, both because of the text touting Biggers as the author of the first three Chan novels -- published in 1925, 1926 and 1928 -- and because the artist's signature reads "Skrenda28." Skrenda, as most photoplay edition collectors will know, was responsible for dozens of Grosset & Dunlap's dust jackets in this genre.) .
