Description
Edited by G.D. Hobson. 130 fine reproductions (12 in gold & color) & 46 facsimiles in the text. Title printed in red, black, & gold. Large thick 4to, orig. cloth (endpapers foxed as always), red morocco lettering piece on spine, t.e.g. London: Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press, 1940. Limited to 180 numbered copies, signed by Major Abbey and G.D. Hobson. This sumptuously produced catalogue, the only authoritative survey of the history of bookbinding in the British Isles, is especially valuable on account of the wealth of fresh information given in the detailed descriptions of a magnificent series of specimens, representative of the various styles and periods. With twelve appendices and four indices. Very nice copy. Presentation copy, inscribed by Major Abbey to John Sparrow, Warden of All Souls College, Oxford, dated March 1954, with Sparrow’s bookplate. ❧ Breslauer, The Uses of Bookbinding Literature, p. 28–“Hobson’s method was to make lists of bindings which had the same tools in common; if the binder of one or several was known, he could attribute the others to him; if the workshop was not known, he baptized it with a sobriquet, such as ‘Queens’ Binder’; all this required an immense amount of historical and archival research, the examination of the holdings of permanent libraries and private collections, and of the illustrations in books on bindings and auction and booksellers’ catalogues.”.

(without the separate title to Part II between col. 752 and 753). Together 4 vols., uniformly bound by Lindskogs in polished brown half calf, marbled sides, red and olive morocco labels (vol. 1 label chipped with loss of 1.5 x 3 cm), top edges gilt, original wrappers of all the parts bound in. Complete set, well bound by Lindskogs of Goteborg, of Collijn's monumental Swedish bibliography 1478-1699, exhaustively describing 770 books printed between 1478 and 1599, and ca. 6,000 seventeenth century books. Of the earliest books printed in Sweden, this set is justly considered to be its NATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY. - Isak Collijn (1875-1949) was no doubt the greatest of all Scandinavian bibliographers. An indefatigable, polyglot scholar of vast erudition, he is internationally best-known as an incunabulist whose contribution to the bibliography of fifteenth century books was invaluable. He was director of the Royal Library, Stockholm - with the title of "Riksbibliotekarien." i.e. Imperial Librarian - from 1916 to his retirement, in 1940, which allowed him to finish his Swedish bibliography. -- Loosely inserted: an obituary of Collijn by T. Kleberg from "Zentralblatt fur Bibliothekswesen," 1950. ¶ From the famed bibliographical library of B.H. Breslauer (sale of the Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana, 2005, lot 1248).

Description
1955. Box. Thick card and metal clasp and handle. Very Good. Novelty pencil case, with a pinwheel on the top with questions and answers to the "television quiz". N.D. Mid-1950s. The box is 22 by 15 cm, and 3 cm deep. You manipulate the pinwheel from an edge with the top lid raised a little. Within are compartments for pencils, erasers, a protractor and a ruler. Below there is also a pull-out drawer. Our copy is fully stocked on the top level, with the lower drawer now empty. We can not represent whether the various implements are original to the box, but certainly some of them were added later. The case was clearly used, perhaps extensively, but it is also well-preserved. There is some rubbing, especially along the edges, and other wear, but overall the case is quite well-preserved.

Description
[Milwaukee: Socialist Party, 1933?]. Single sheet, 9" x 24", folded to 9"x6", 10pp. Mild toning to margins; Very Good. Transcript of an extemporaneous speech delivered by Milwaukee's Socialist Mayor Daniel Hoan, answering attacks against his administration's decision to issue city-backed bonds (here called "scrip") rather than borrowing cash to address its outstanding budget deficit. The bonds were issued in six series between 1933 and 1938, and have been credited with saving the city from bakruptcy during the worst years of the Great Depression. Hoan (1881-1961) served as Milwaukee's mayor from 1916 to 1940, still the longest continuous Socialist administration in American history. This a rather uncommon remnant of Milwaukee's socialist past; not noted in commerce, with ten catalogued examples in OCLC member institutions.

Description
S. l. (Los Angeles, CA): California Fruit Growers Exchange, 1932. Softcover. First edition thus; 5 3/4 x 4 1/4; pp. 1-12; chromolithographed wraps; small nicks to tips of spine and corners; small closed cut to bottom edge of front wrap; illustrated with b & w drawings and two tables; very good or better condition. A charming, coloring book for children, it told the story of Betty and Billy visiting their Uncle Jim, who lives on a ranch in California and grows orange trees. Kids were supposed to read the story and color the illustrations with crayons and water colors. The booklet also contained height and weight charts for keeping records of the development of its little owners and a list of good health rules. A sad fact of the times was that the prevalent reality of the California citriculture was that it completely relied on immigrant, minority groups, and more specifically Chinese, Japanese, and Mexican workers, while literature and art portrayed the industry as always and only involving white people, including the front wrap illustration of the current book, which showed a white father and his two children gazing contentedly down rows of orange trees.
