Description
Paris: Apud Christianum Wechelum, 1534 Illustrated with woodcut printer's device to title page and final page, and numerous woodcut diagrams throughout text. Presumed third edition (first published in 1528). Bound in full modern brown calf for Maclehose, with board margins double-ruled in blind, spine with four raised bands, lettered in gilt, top edge gilt and other edges stained green, and marbled endpapers. Fine, with some contemporary annotations to margins. Overall, an exceptionally well-preserved copy. Elementale Geometricum is a shortened version of Euclid's seminal 13-book treatise on geometry and mathematics, Elements. Voegelin's version played an important role in disseminating Euclid's principles of geometry to students in the 16th century. Johannes Voegelin (ca. 1500 - 1549) was a teacher of mathematics and astronomy who taught at St. Stephen's Public School in Vienna and the University of Vienna. In addition to Elementale Geometrium he published an annotated edition of Theodosius' Sphaerics (1529) and some works on astronomy. Euclid (ca. 300 BC) was a Greek mathematician whose greatest work was Elements. For the treatise, Euclid collected the findings of great mathematicians before him and brilliantly organized them into a cohesive system. In The Development of Mathematics (1940), Eric Temple Bell writes, "With the completion of Euclid's Elements... For the first time in history masses of isolated discoveries were unified and correlated by a single guided principle, that of rigid deduction from explicitly stated assumptions." Elements is one of the most influential books in human history, helping shape more than two decades of thought and progress. . Third Edition. Hard Cover. Fine.

Description
Puebla, 1870. Forty-one broadsides, most measuring approximately 12 x 8 inches, many larger. Stab holes at left margin where previously bound; larger broadsides folded to fit a folio volume. Some wear and chipping at edges, occasionally heavier. Scattered, occasionally crude, tape repairs. Light tanning and scattered foxing. Overall, good plus. A large and interesting group of Mexican broadsides published by the state of Puebla that promulgate numerous state and federal decrees, laws, and orders from 1830 to 1870. While topically somewhat disparate, many deal with the levying of taxes, particularly on alcohol and tobacco, imposing duties, regulating imports and exports, and other financial issues of national importance. A significant number also relate to foreign affairs and the domestic political situation during a fairly turbulent time for the country. The earliest four broadsides present in this collection date to 1830-1, and concern tax and customs matters, one of which is a decree that orders an additional state tax on pulque for the construction of a new jail and hospital. There are nine broadsides here from the 1840s, the most interesting of which promulgates a 1843 decree by Santa Anna that distributes financial responsibilities to the states for restitution payments to the United States on claims dating to the Texas Revolution. An 1849 decree addresses several issues regarding domestic prisoners and veterans from the Mexican-American War, and another from the same year announces the creation of the new state of Guerrero (on the southwest coast of the country). Five broadsides from the first half of the 1850s include a decree regarding taxes on aguardiente and orders for the observation of the funeral of Manuel de la Peña y Peña, long-serving Justice of the Mexican Supreme Court and the interim president of the country between following the fall of Mexico City in 1847 and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The largest subgroup, eleven broadsides, date to 1856, the year after the Liberal opposition deposed and exiled Santa Anna for the final time. The most significant of these announces the annulment of all orders made by Santa Anna during his last reign and fixes a date for the hearing of claims for restitution or damages from the burdens of the previous regime. Another establishes several categories of awards and medals, such as "Patriotica Condecoracion de la Paz" and "Restaurador de la Paz en 1856," for those who helped to defeat the Conservative factions in this instance. The final sizable group of broadsides date to 1868, the first full year the Benito Juarez was in power following the defeat of Loyalist forces and the arrest and execution of Maximilian. Among these are a large printing of the Ley Organica which supposedly protected the freedom of the press guaranteed under the new Constitution. Other interesting items include a decree that punishes highway robbery by death, two orders for the repair of railroads, and several decrees reestablishing the customs and duty system for imports and exports. The last item chronologically in the present collection is a large printing of the 1870 treaty of peace and commerce between Mexico and Prussia. A sizable assemblage of material, with many interesting broadsides on numerous topics of Mexican history.

Description
Big Spring, Tx: Jordan's Print, 1931. Very good.. Four small bifolia and one broadside, measuring 14.5 x 5.5 inches. Broadside folded; one short closed at lower edge of one pamphlet. One contemporary, pencil ownership inscription. Otherwise, minor dust soiling and light toning. An interesting assortment of protest and promotional literature promulgated by the employee's association of the Texas & Pacific and Abilene & Southern Railroads. Most of the material protests the perceived subsidies and other advantages given to trucking transportation and highway building by the state and federal governments. According the statements herein, the unequal competition fostered by the situation will lead to the destruction of the railroads and the loss of the livelihoods of its employees. Among the titles here are "Taxation Without Equity Is Tyranny," "Give Us Fair Competition," and "Are Motor Buses and Large Trucks Subsidized?" Also present is a statement unanimously adopted at the 1931 annual meeting of the association that lengthily protests, "This one-sided competitive content now exist[ing] between the railroads on the one hand and the trucks and busses on the other." One final pamphlet promotes the charity of the railroads in North and West Texas to the ranchers and farmers of these regions that in 1930 were beginning to feel the effects of the Dust Bowl.

Description
London: Henry Clements, 1713. First Edition, Third Edition. First edition, first printing of George Berkeley's work of philosophy. [x], 166, [vi], 44 pp. Octavo, bound in full contemporary mottled calf, laced in boards. Blindstamped ruled borders, red morocco title label to spine, all edges speckled red. Bound together with the third edition of another work by Berkeley, also published by Henry Clements in 1713: Passive Obedience, Or, the Christian Doctrine Of Not Resisting the Supreme Power, Proved and Vindicated upon the Principles of the Law of Nature. In a Discourse Deliver'd at the College-Chapel. Very Good with moderate wear to boards, cracking to leather at extremities, minimal chipping at head and tail of spine, and rounded and bumped corners. Joints repaired, leather coated with preservative. Previous owner names have been torn from free endpapers, cut more carefully from upper margins of first two leaves. Several 18th century ink markings and inscription "Owner / 1720" remain on the endpapers. The two books are printed on different paper stock. Three Dialogues is slightly tanned with scattered foxing to margins; Passive Obedience is heavily toned. Both books collated complete. From the library of William A. Strutz with his small bookplate to the front pastedown. George Berkeley (1685 - 1753) was an Anglo-Irish philosopher and clergyman who advocated the view that objects cannot exist without being perceived. He wrote Three Dialogues in order to expand on the ideas expressed in his most notable work, A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge. Passive Obedience is a call to obey established authorities, God above all. That a third edition was published just one year after the first is testament to the intensity of Enlightenment debates about the relationships between individuals and church and state.

Description
Various: Various, 1900. Very good. A scrapbook of photographs, drawings, newspaper clippings, letters, telegrams, company documents, etc., 1890s - 1940s; 11 1/2 x 10 1/2; pp. [74], mostly recto only; sheets housed in a contemporary, tri-ring binder; many of the photographs subtitled in manuscript; some of the sheets with small cuts at perforations; occasional spotting and edge-wear; overall in very good condition. Assembled by a long-term employee and later, executive officer, in Kansas City, Missouri and San Francisco, of the Postal Telegraph - Cable Company, the scrapbook contained an interesting glimpse into the history of the only viable competitor to Western Union in the United States at the end of the 19th century. The company was founded in the 1880s by Irish-American industrialist John William Mackay (1831 - 1902), who had amassed a vast fortune in silver mining in the Comstock Lode. Bryant Fields, the compiler of the current scrapbook, had begun working for the Mackay venture in its early years at the age of just 14 (there is a studio photograph of him at the start of his employment). Some of the assembled images included storefronts of the Postal Telegraph Company aross several states, a 1926 hole-digger and pole-setter machinery and operators across the desolate Arizona desert on the Los Angeles - Texas line, a submarine cable repair outfit, employees inside the Salt Lake City station, and many more. There were also personal photographs of trips of the Fields Family. Other items included several manuscript- and typed company lists of authorized positions and salaries, telegrams, clipped newspaper articles and cartoons, and so on.

Description
Mexico City: April 17, 1837. Very good.. 10pp. Folio. Modern blue cloth, front board gilt. Contents clean. An extensive Mexican decree issued the year after the Texas Revolution dealing with the organization and operation of the national Treasury Department. Its main innovation was the installation of federal heads of each department's branch of the Ministeria de Hacienda to administer taxes to and distributions from the national treasury. They also assumed duties regarding the oversight of payments for military contracts, upkeep, and the like. This important order was a part of Santa Anna's drive to centralize power in Mexico under the federal government after he led the revision of the Mexican constitution in 1835. Its emphasis on military preparation also clearly seems a reaction to the loss of Texas a year prior. Scarce, we locate only one copy, at Berkeley.

[Columbus]: State of Ohio, 1861. Wraps. Good. Stitched wraps. Approx. 9" x 6". 11 pages, [2]. Title on page 1. Light foxing to the first page. Contents clean and in very good condition. Contents contain correspondence between the Speaker of the House and the Senate dated between April 12th - May 13th, 1861. Scarce. From Ohio History Central: With the outbreak of the American Civil War in April 1861, Ohio Governor William Dennison dispatched George McClellan and Jacob Cox to the state arsenal in Columbus to investigate the guns and other supplies that Ohio had on hand to help equip the state's militia units. The two men discovered a few crates of rusted smoothbore muskets, mildewed harnesses for horses, and some six-pound cannons that could not be fired. Despite the lack of equipment, Dennison encouraged Ohio communities to revive the militia system and form units that they would send to Columbus, the state capital. Dennison entrusted McClellan with command of these units, asking him to create a cohesive and professional force out of the volunteers. Most of these units formed the basis of Ohio Volunteer Infantry units, which the State of Ohio eventually provided to the United States government for the war against the South.
