Description
: , 1840. A Unique and Complete Album of 121 Grotesque Watercolors An Extraordinary Satirical Cycle Concluding with "Finis" [CARICATURE]. Grotesque Sketches by Uncle Walpole. Taken down from the walls of his late dwelling The Hermitage. 1840. Veluti in Speculum [As in a mirror]. England, ca. 1840-1847. Large folio (21 1/8 x 13 inches; 536 x 330 mm.). Title and eighty-seven leaves, of which thirty-four carry colored images on both recto and verso, comprising in total 121 original watercolor caricatures. Album worn and defective; spine perished, covers detached, gatherings exposed; plates generally good but a few with marginal tears, occasional stains, creasing to lower blank corners, and title-page worn and torn at margins. A unique, complete, and unpublished satirical album, conceived from the outset as a self-contained cycle of grotesque invention and brought to a formal close with a final sheet boldly inscribed "Finis." The suite encompasses an extraordinary range of imagery - from miniature comic vignettes to fully realized grotesque tableaux - all executed with wit, invention, and a distinctively theatrical presence. The subjects are social caricature, grotesque physiognomy, phrenological satire, anthropomorphic beasts, drinking and domestic quarrels, hybrid demons, and burlesque "scientific" scenes. The title-leaf and fifty-four watercolors are painted directly on single sheets; many of the earlier examples are cut to shape and mounted (some on both recto and verso of the same support), while the later sequence (plates 40-121) consists largely of full single-sheet compositions. This mixture lends the album a dynamic, collage-like quality, while also underscoring the compiler's intention to preserve the entirety as a coherent anthology. Technically accomplished and often striking in palette - washes occasionally heightened with gum arabic - the drawings show affinities with the satirical traditions of Rowlandson, Woodward, Gillray, and Cruikshank, and with the anthropomorphic grotesqueries of Grandville, though always refracted through a more private, eccentric, and at times fantastical imagination. Rich in humor, fantasy, and biting caricature, this album is a rare survival of early nineteenth-century satirical art outside the published print trade. Its scale, completeness, and the emphatic "Finis" at its conclusion mark it as a deliberately conceived satirical masterpiece - a testament to the vigor of the grotesque tradition at the threshold of the Victorian age. Several sheets introduce demons, grotesques, and animals behaving as humans (e.g., a devil playing drums, a fantasy orchestra of beasts, hybrid figures on pedestals). This echoes the satirical tradition of Grandville's later anthropomorphic works, though here much earlier, aligning stylistically with ca. 1780-1820 English caricature practice. The repeated presence of figures handling skulls and engaged in speculative discussion suggests parody of early phrenological study, which began circulating in Britain in the late 18th century and became a fashionable topic by the 1810s-20s. The grotesque tradition in British and Continental art stretches from the Renaissance to the caricatures of Hogarth and his successors, but works of this scope and completeness in watercolor are exceptionally rare. This series appears to have been conceived as a private album, not intended for publication, though it shares affinities with satirical caricature suites circulating in London and Paris during the 1820s-1840s. The careful numbering of plates and the emphatic "Finis" suggest a deliberate, almost book-like conception - a private "volume" of grotesques. Such albums are seldom encountered in so complete and internally consistent a state. To our knowledge, no other record of this album exists in bibliographies, institutional catalogs, or auction histories. Its playful title-page ascribes authorship to "Uncle Walpole," tying it suggestively (if perhaps jokingly) to the Walpolean tradition of grotesque collecting and satire. A unique and complete visual manuscript, comprising title and 121 grotesque watercolors, forming a finished cycle of satirical invention. With its mixture of mounted cut-outs, recto/verso compositions, and full-sheet watercolors, culminating in the artist's explicit conclusion, this album stands as a rare survival of private grotesque satire, worthy of institutional acquisition or inclusion in a major private collection of caricature and illustration. List of Watercolors: Title: Illustrated title-leaf with grotesque framing figures, inscribed as above. Bathyllus in the Swan Dance 3. Bathyllus Posturing 4. Lucian's Strange Creatures 5 Birth from the Calf on the Leg "This issue contains five exceedingly brilliant Drawings by the late Aubrey Beardsley which have been regarded as too free in design for general circulation. Three of these illustrate THE SIXTH SATIRE OF JUVENAL (the satire against Woman), and the remaining two designs were intended for LUCIAN'S TRUE HISTORY issued about twelve years ago, but were never included in the volume. These Drawings are printed from the original blocks, and as only a few engraver's proofs have previously been pulled, the impressions are perfectly clear, and may be regarded (considering the few copies now printed) as Proofs. On hundred and twenty copies only have been printed (each numbered) on vellum paper, foolscap folio in size, and enclosed in suitable coloured wraper. This copy is No........." (Limitation leaf). "120 numbered copies. Reade and Dickinson variously date this to 1897 and 1899 as well as 1905, the year given by Gallatin. The prospectus (printed on paper) includes the introductory material from the colophon leaf." (Lasner) The reason these drawings were described as "too free in design for general circulation" is closely tied to the moral panic surrounding the Decadent movement in the 1890s, particularly after the trial of Oscar Wilde in 1895. Understanding this context makes the portfolio far more interesting historically. Why the Drawings Were Suppressed: 1. The Post-Wilde Cultural Backlash. After Wilde's conviction for "gross indecency" in 1895, British authorities and publishers became extremely cautious about Decadent literature and art. Artists and writers associated with the movement - including Aubrey Beardsley and his publisher Leonard Smithers - suddenly found themselves under scrutiny. Beardsley had already been linked to Wilde through: his illustrations for Salome and his association with the magazine The Yellow Book. When Wilde was arrested, Beardsley was dismissed from The Yellow Book immediately, even though he had no involvement in the scandal. 2. The Juvenal Drawings Were Explicitly Misogynistic and Erotic. Three of the five designs illustrate Satire VI by the Roman satirist Juvenal. That satire is famous for its violent attack on women, including themes of: sexual excess, adultery, cruelty, moral corruption. Beardsley's images amplify those themes with: sadomasochistic imagery, grotesque exaggeration and decadent erotic symbolism. One drawing - "Juvenal Scourging Woman" - shows a stylized scene of punishment that Victorian publishers considered unprintable. 3. The Lucian Drawings Were Equally Strange. The remaining designs relate to True History by Lucian of Samosata. Lucian's narrative includes: bizarre hybrid creatures, surreal transformations and absurd erotic imagery. Beardsley illustrated these themes with grotesque fantasy forms, including the notorious drawing "Birth from the Calf on the Leg." Even in the 1890s this was considered extreme grotesquerie. 4. Why Smithers Published Them Anyway. Smithers specialized in Decadent and semi-clandestine publications. His catalogue included: works by Oscar Wilde, erotic or controversial literature and privately circulated art portfolios. Rather than issuing the drawings publicly, he solved the problem by: printing only 120 copies; selling them mainly to collectors and presenting them as "proof impressions". This allowed him to avoid the attention that a commercial edition might attract. Some scholars believe the drawings were originally intended for a full illustrated edition of Juvenal that never appeared - another project abandoned after the Wilde scandal made such work commercially risky. Among the five plates in An Issue of Five Drawings Illustrative of Juvenal and Lucian, the one that caused the greatest discomfort to early editors and museum curators was "Juvenal Scourging Woman." It is widely regarded by Beardsley scholars as the most controversial image in the portfolio, and for several decades it was either omitted or discreetly suppressed in exhibition catalogues. Why "Juvenal Scourging Woman" Was So Problematic: The drawing illustrates Satire VI by Juvenal - a notoriously misogynistic Roman satire attacking the morals of women in imperial Rome. Beardsley's treatment is deliberately extreme: a stylized female figure subjected to punishment; theatrical cruelty rendered with elegant line and erotic undertones typical of Decadent imagery The combination of violence, sexuality, and satire made Victorian publishers extremely nervous. For late-19th-century Britain - even in avant-garde circles - this imagery crossed a line. Why Museums Avoided Showing It: After the scandal involving Oscar Wilde in 1895, institutions tried to distance themselves from anything connected to the Decadent movement. As a result, exhibitions of Aubrey Beardsley's work often excluded this drawing and some catalogues reproduced only four of the five images. Early 20th-century Beardsley monographs occasionally described it but did not illustrate it. This pattern persisted well into the mid-20th century. The Other Drawing That Alarmed Editors and the second most controversial plate is: "Birth from the Calf on the Leg." This grotesque design depicts a bizarre mythological birth scene that borders on the surreal. Its imagery - combining: distorted anatomy, symbolic fertility, grotesque fantasy - made it one of Beardsley's strangest inventions. For decades it was regarded as too eccentric and unsettling for mainstream reproduction. Why the Portfolio Matters in Beardsley's Career The five drawings represent Beardsley's final stylistic phase (1896), when his line became: extremely thin, highly ornamental and almost abstract This same late period produced his famous illustrations for: Lysistrata and the magazine The Savoy. The style is more extreme than his earlier work for Salome. A Collector's Perspective Many Beardsley collectors consider this portfolio appealing because it contains: suppressed drawings, late-period Beardsley, printing from the original blocks and a tiny limitation (120 copies) It is therefore one of the closest things to a "private portfolio" of Beardsley erotica issued in the early 20th century. Gallatin 30; Lasner 149.

Christmas Music Supplement of The Examiner. Chicago & New York: The George M. Hill Company, 1900. First edition. Large folio newspaper supplement. Single sheet printed on both sides measuring 27 7/8 x 21 1/2 inches (708 x 546 mm), folded twice to make eight pages. Printed with musical notation for two songs with words by L. Frank Baum and illustrations by W. W. Denslow. The music composed by Alberta N. Hall. Original pictorial newspaper supplement as issued. As typical for ephemeral holiday newspaper inserts, surviving examples commonly show folds, short marginal tears, or light wear; well-preserved copies are uncommon. A charming and scarce piece of Baum ephemera issued during the remarkable year 1900, advertising Baum, et al's The Songs of Father Goose, published in book form by The George M. Hill Company in the same year which also saw the appearance of Baum and Denslow's celebrated The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The supplement presents two songs derived from Baum's musical nursery project Songs of Father Goose, "The Ostrich Dance" and "Baby Pulled the Pussy's Tail", illustrated in Denslow's bold and whimsical style. Produced as a Christmas newspaper supplement, it was intended for seasonal amusement rather than preservation; most copies were discarded shortly after publication. Because of its large-format newspaper production and fragile folding format, the survival rate appears to be very low. Consequently the piece is considerably scarcer than the bound Baum - Denslow publications issued by the George M. Hill Company during the same period. OCLC locates no copies in libraries and institutions wordwide.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1886. The Original Alice: Carroll's Manuscript Facsimile in First Edition CARROLL, Lewis [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]. Alice's Adventures Under Ground. Being a Facsimile of the Original MS. Book afterwards developed into "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." With Thirty-Seven Illustrations by the Author. London: Macmillan and Co., 1886. First edition. Octavo (7 3/8 x 4 7/8 inches; 187 x 124 mm.). viii, [8], 95, [2], [2, advertisements], [1, blank] pp. Publisher's original red cloth over boards, covers triple-ruled in gilt, upper cover and spine decoratively lettered in gilt, rear cover with central gilt medallion depicting the Mock Turtle, coated black endpapers, all edges gilt. A near fine copy, bright and unusually well preserved, housed in a fleece-lined quarter red morocco clamshell case, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in compartments. The Origin of Wonderland One of the most evocative and desirable of all Carroll publications, this volume presents the facsimile of the original handwritten manuscript - the very book that Lewis Carroll prepared in 1864 as a Christmas gift for Alice Liddell. That manuscript, later expanded and transformed into Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), represents the true genesis of one of the most enduring works of English literature. Unlike the familiar Tenniel-illustrated editions, Alice's Adventures Under Ground offers a uniquely intimate encounter with Carroll's imagination: his own calligraphy, page design, and illustrations, preserving the story in its earliest, most personal form. The facsimile edition of 1886 - issued to benefit Carroll's charities - is therefore not merely a reprint, but a direct visual and textual echo of the original manuscript itself. 40 double-page woodcuts. 50; 37 folding leaves. Woodblock-printed. Two vols. Large 8vo (276 x 190 mm.), orig. orange wrappers (rubbed), title-slips on upper covers, new stitching. From the final leaf in Vol. 2 (in loose trans.): “Printed in 1628 in Kyoto by Kakyu 嘉休 & distributed in Kumamoto by Nagayama Kisaburō 長山喜三郎.” SATSUMA BAN: A very rare and finely illustrated Satsuma ban 薩摩版; we find no copy in WorldCat. The printing and numerous double-page woodcuts of this luxurious work were sponsored by the Satsuma fiefdom to inculcate the Confucian philosophy of governance amongst the intelligentsia of Kyushu in order to maintain order and social cohesion. Not yet having the ability to print complex books, the Satsuma fiefdom commissioned works in Kyoto, which were then brought to Kumamoto for distribution throughout the domain on Kyushu Island. These books are known as Satsuma ban. The rich and powerful Satsuma fiefdom, led at this time by Shimazu Tadastune, or Iehisa 島津家久, (1576-1638, r. 1601-38), was well known for its high educational standards. The Satsunan school — a loosely organized group of Neo-Confucian scholars based in Satsuma province — created an intellectual base for the study of Confucian philosophy. Our edition has a Preface dated 1608 by the domain lord, Iehisa, in which he emphasizes the importance of Confucian virtues and teachings, using the major events of the philosopher’s life. Iehisa, like many Japanese military leaders, had become familiar with Neo-Confucianism during the Korean campaigns, from which Korean Neo-Confucian books were brought back and widely studied. There is also a Postscript of 1557. ILLUSTRATIONS & THEIR SOURCES: [A] “kind of collection of moral-didactic imagery that had considerable currency in late Ming visual culture was the illustration of events in the life of a single exemplar, above all the sage Confucius (Kongzi). Often called Shengji tu, or some variation of this title, illustrated narratives of the life of Confucius were made in the form of printed books and albums, incised stone tablets (from which rubbings could be made) and painted albums and handscrolls…Depending on its particular setting, the Shengji tu could serve as a vehicle of argument, instruction, pious affirmation, or even entertainment… “The earliest pictorial account of Confucius’s life was created by the censor Zhang Kai (1398-1460), who selected some thirty episodes from Confucius’s biography in Sima Qian’s Shiji (Records of the Grand Historian), composed poetic eulogies (zan) for them, and had an anonymous artist illustrate them [in 1444; no longer extant]. Zhang presented Confucius as a man of virtue and integrity who devoted his energies to writing and teaching when unable to serve a worthy ruler, and who lived the moral ideals professed by scholar-officials…Wanting to redress what he considered serious omissions in Zhang Kai’s account, He Tingrui [fl. late 15th century] chose the woodblock medium in order to promote a more hagiographic conception of Confucius’s life that included additional episodes involving supernatural phenomena and powers [which appeared in 1497 and, apparently, no long extant]. Over the course of the sixteenth and early seventeenth century, many reprints and new editions of this expanded Shengji tu appeared…By the late sixteenth century, some versions of the Shengji tu in circulation included many more illustrations, and competing editions differed considerably in the scenes they included.”–Julia K. Murray, “Didactic Illustrations in Printed Books” in Brokaw & Chow, Printing and Book Culture in Late Imperial China (Berkeley: 2005), pp. 433-41. Our Satsuma ban is a beautifully illustrated narrative of the life of Confucius and most likely follows the scholarly Kongsheng jiayu tu (Illustrated Family Sayings of the Sage Confucius), privately published in Hangzhou in 1589 by the aspiring scholar Wu Jiamo. Like ours, it had 40 woodcut scenes of high artistic quality. Commercial publishers quickly pirated the Chinese edition and made it widely available in several editions of varying quality. No doubt a copy of one of these editions found its way to Japan and served as the model for our book. This is an uncommonly early Japanese book to be so richly illustrated. The scenes begin with Confucius’s mother offering a sacrifice on Mount Ni to obtain a son, and go on to depict the major events in the life of Confucius: as a baby and young boy playing at performing rites, visiting Laozi, as the local administrator in service to a variety of local rulers, travelling between states in an ox-drawn cart, kneeling to acknowledge the rainbow from the Big Dipper (suggesting that the Heavens approved of Confucius’s compilation and editing of the wisdom of ancient sages), entertaining his parents at a feast, mourning the dead qilin, as a retired scholar surrounded by books and disciples, to his final days as an old and sick man with cane in hand telling his disciple Zigong that he had dreamed of his own funeral, to posthumous scenes with disciples mourning at his grave and the sacrifice by the Han emperor Gaozu (r. 206-195 BCE) at what had become a temple to Confucius. The expressive woodcuts are finely printed in excellent impressions. Fine set. Each volume has some expertly restored worming touching some images. Minor browning. Preserved in a chitsu. ❧ See also Prof. Murray’s “Varied Views of the Sage. Illustrated Narratives of the Life of Confucius” in On Sacred Grounds. Culture, Society, Politics, and the Formation of the Cult of Confucius (Thomas A. Wilson, ed., Harvard: 2002), Chap. 5.

Description
43 folding leaves. 8vo (240 x 170 mm.), orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers with orig. title-slip, old stitching. [Japan]: [1791] (date of Preface). A rare manuscript of Japanese natural studies, or the “learning of roots and herbs” (honzōgaku 本草學) by Zō, doctor and botanist (1758-1834). It was one of the major intellectual trends of the Tokugawa period, with a large portion of the educated classes taking an interest in the topic. Initially inspired by the Chinese encyclopedic work Bencao gangmu 本草綱目 [Systematic Materia Medica], Japanese natural studies came with time to focus on the natural environment of Japan in contradistinction to China. Our manuscript, explicitly concerned with the mushrooms of “Our August Japan,” is a case in point. It contains descriptions of 129 mushrooms, divided into categories: wood mushrooms, ground mushrooms, bamboo mushrooms, wood-ear mushrooms, and poisonous mushrooms. Our author lists alternative names for a mushroom in question, notes where it grows, and describes its appearance. Literary references are given in many of the entries. Curiously, despite the manuscript’s title, Zō Han quotes from Chinese local gazetteers, which often contained lists of local products. There is an appendix, which contains four essays. discusses, in turn, different names of the mushroom in various parts of Japan; the etymology of the character kinoko 蕈, meaning mushroom; the method of ascertaining the poisonous character of a mushroom; and a prescription for breaking down the poison. Zō was the author of Seikei zusetsu [An Illustrated Book of Agricultural Things], the great agricultural and botanical work issued in the early years of the 19th century. It is an encyclopedic survey of all the agricultural products and practices of Japan. He served the Satsuma fiefdom under the lord Shimazu Shigehide Our text was never printed, circulating only in manuscript form. ❧ Ueno Masuzō 上野益三, Nihon hakubutsugakushi 日本博物学史 (Tokyo: Heibonsha, 1973), p. 416.

Description
13/04/1820. Here Monroe returns the original to its recipientThe first great crisis over slavery occurred when Missouri requested to be admitted to the Union as a slave state in 1819. The number of slave and free states was then balanced at 11 each, and admission would upset that balance. Both north and south staked out positions based on sectionalism, rather than nationalism, the first time this had occurred. The debates in Congress were intense. With so many territories in the west still thinly settled or not settled at all (and the certainty that additional requests for admission would be presented as these territories were populated and qualified for statehood), it was clear that this divisive issue could recur again and again. Congress thus sought to settle the question once and for all by admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free one, and more importantly, by drawing a line below which slavery would be permitted in the territories and above which it would be forbidden. The Missouri Compromise appeared to most to be a perfect solution, but some were troubled by the implications of drawing a physical line between north and south, and thereby creating defined sections where once there was a union. In March, 1820, Jefferson received word of the details of the Compromise essentially agreed upon in Congress. He was appalled by the very idea of reducing a political disagreement to geographical terms. On April 5, 1820, he wrote to Mark Hill, a Maine congressman, that “The idea of a geographical line, once suggested, will brood in the minds of all those who prefer the gratification of their ungovernable passions to the peace and union of their country.” We offer a letter that proves that Pres. Monroe was shown this exact letter to Hill (and was thus aware of Jefferson’s opposition to the Missouri Compromise); in fact it is the very cover letter with which Monroe returned the Jefferson letter to Hill.Autograph Letter Signed as President to Mark Hill, April 13, 1820. “Mr. Monroe has perused Mr. Jefferson’s letter with pleasure, which he now returns to Mr. Hill, with thanks for his attention.” Just days later, Jefferson wrote the famous letter saying that the Missouri question was a “firebell in the night,” and promised to be the knell of the Union. Despite Jefferson’s opposition, Monroe felt that he had no choice but to sign the Missouri Compromise. Ultimately Jefferson proved to be correct; dividing the nation geographically seemed to freeze attitudes and actions along sectional lines, and was the first step to Civil War. See Jefferson and His Time by Malone for a full discussion.

Description
27/08/1823. Col. John P. Decatur, brother of Commodore Stephen Decatur, was a man unlike his famous brother. In 1820, New York Governor DeWitt Clinton was challenged for reelection by Daniel Tompkins, who was the sitting vice president. Some active-serving U.S. military officers used their positions to try to prevent his reelection and install Tompkins, an effort that failed. In 1821 Clinton laid proofs of that interference before his state legislature. Col. Decatur, at that time the naval storekeeper at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, was heavily implicated in this highly improper conduct. Information about the scandal was sent to the Navy Department by Decatur’s superior, Samuel Evans, the Captain Commandant of the Navy Yard. The Monroe administration was not content with inaction, lest that be taken as approval that interference in an election, particularly one in which Monroe’s vice president was the candidate/beneficiary, was acceptable conduct. So as a form of discipline, Decatur was removed from New York and ordered transferred to the smaller posting of Portsmouth, NH by Secretary of the Navy Smith Thompson. Without notice, Decatur then showed up at the White House and confronted President Monroe about the injustice done him, thus backing the President into a corner and causing him to state that the move was ordered by him personally.""It was painful to me to enter into this subject with him, but I had no alternative, & in consequence told him explicitly, that I had disapproved his conduct""Autograph Letter Signed as President, Oak Hill, August 27, 1823, to Navy Secretary Thompson, reporting that he had personally chastised Decatur for improper conduct. “On Monday late in the evening Col. Decatur came here, in consequence of the receipt of your letter, transferring him to Portsmouth, to complain and remonstrate against it. It was painful to me to enter into this subject with him, but I had no alternative, & in consequence told him explicitly, that I had disapproved his conduct in the affair with Capt. Evans, & had directed his removal to Portsmouth. He complained of the manner, showing me the letter. I observed that the letter was not a dismissal, although it indicated dissatisfaction, which was felt & meant to be expressed; that if he went to Portsmouth, he would hold the ground there which he had held at New York, to remain in service as long as his conduct should be satisfactory to the government. That although dissatisfaction was felt at his conduct, no dishonorable motive was imputed to him, and acting prudently hereafter, he might acquire any consideration to which he might have just claims. Under these circumstances we parted. I mention the occurrence for your information. I write this on the presumption that you will have left the city before it reaches there & to be forwarded after you in that event.”This scolding from the President seems to have little positive effect on Decatur’s conduct. In 1824 he was implicated in influencing a member of the New York Senate to vote for the incorporation of the controversial Chemical Bank, so as to gain some personal benefit from that bank in return. Decatur was dubbed “worthless” by the compiler of the Martin Van Buren papers. He was, however, well liked by Andrew Jackson, who appointed him Collector of Portsmouth, NH in 1829.

Description
16/06/1898. Cornelius N. Bliss was a partner in one of the largest wholesale dry-goods firms in the country. He was also chairman of the Republican committee in New York in 1887 and 1888, and contributed much to the success of the Benjamin Harrison ticket in his state in the 1888 election. He served as treasurer of the Republican National Committee from 1892 to 1904. He turned down the offer of becoming Secretary of the Treasury under President McKinley, but accepted the post of Secretary of the Interior, maintaining that position until February 1899. While in office, Bliss focused on forestry and Indian affairs. Offered by McKinley the vice presidential slot in his 1900 reelection campaign, he declined, so the nod went instead to Theodore Roosevelt. In 1904, Bliss was Roosevelt’s campaign manager.Autograph note signed, on an Executive Mansion card, Washington, June 16, 1898, addressed to Bliss as “Secy. Interior”. He writes, “The Solicitor General informs me that you are disposed to appoint Henry Steele an Inspector of Timber. It will be extremely satisfactory if you can make such an appointment.” It is signed “W. McK.”An uncommon note of McKinley as president, obtained by us from the Bliss descendants.

Chicago: Triumph Books, 2001 First edition, first printing. Foreword by Yogi Berra. Signed by Ford and Pepe in blue marker on title page. Publisher's black paper covered boards, spine lettered in gilt, black and white photos throughout; in its original white dust jacket lettered in blue and tan, photo to rear panel attributed by Lou Requena. Fine; about fine unclipped dust jacket, with light wear to top edges of panels and head of spine. Overall, a handsome copy. In this book Yankees legend Whitey Ford assembles his dream Yankees team, listing five players at each position (for example, his list of Right Fielders is 1. Babe Ruth 2. Reggie Jackson 3. Roger Maris 4. Paul O'Neill 5. Tommy Henrich). For each player, he includes a profile with personal anecdotes, insights, and career statistics. Few people are more qualified than Whitey Ford to make an all-time list of Yankees - Ford played all sixteen years of his career with the Yankees (1950, 1953-67), and helped them win six World Series. He was a ten-time All-Star and holds numerous Yankees records, including career wins, shutouts, and games started. Ford was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, along with his close friend and teammate, Mickey Mantle. Few and Chosen is written with Phil Pepe, a longtime Yankees beat writer and sports biographer. . Signed by Author(s). First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Description
Height 23 cms (9"); weight 3.3 kg. (7.2 lbs.). Brown patina. The composer is represented half-length turned slightly left. He wears a wig and is dressed in a jacket, vest, and cravat. "J. S. Bach" incised to front. Provenance Sotheby's Amsterdam, "An Important Private Collection from Hanover," 29 March 2007, lot 1185. Seffner is best remembered for his statue of Johann Sebastian Bach which stands in front of the south wall of St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig. See Neumann: Bilddokumente zur Lebensgeschichte Johann Sebastian Bachs, plate 623 and p. 438. "On Oct. 22, 1894, a skeleton was uncovered here in the cemetery of St. John Church. No stone or sign marked the grave site, but the excavators, guided by archival documents to look for an oaken coffin and by an oral tradition to seek a spot six paces from the south door of the church, believed they had found the earthly remains of Johann Sebastian Bach, laid to rest on July 30, 1750. The bones were examined by a team of medical experts from Leipzig, nearby Halle, and Vienna, declared authentic and studied for abnormalities. (There were none.) Then, in a moment of inspiration, the director of the group, the eminent Leipzig anatomist Wilhelm His, summoned the local sculptor Carl Ludwig Seffner to reconstruct Bach's countenance from the skull. The Seffner Bach Bust served in turn as the basis for Seffner's well-known 1908 statue of Bach, which stands alongside St. Thomas Church here. The New Bach Monument, as it is known (having succeeded a smaller memorial of 1843, sponsored by Mendelssohn), has become an object of veneration by Bach pilgrims the world over." George B. Stauffer in The New York Times, 2 April 2000.

[Paris]: L'Atelier d'Art, 1904. Image size 220 x 181 mm, sheet size 360 x 278. On laid paper. A man holds music and sings while a woman in the background covers her ears. Signed "Vierge" in the plate, with "Daniel Vierge del. et sc." and "Imprimé par L'Atelier d'Art" beneath image along with titling. Plate 40 in the series L'Eau-forte, published in Paris between 1903 and 1904. From the collection of the distinguished American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne (b. 1934). Slightly worn and browned at edges; remnants of tape to upper margin; hinge mount to verso. Spanish printmaker and painter Daniel Vierge is often referred to as "the father of modern illustration" for his contributions to the technique of image reproduction. He came to Paris in 1869 from Madrid and began working for major periodicals such as Le Monde Illustre and La Vie Moderne. During the 1870s, Vierge provided hundreds of illustrations to editions of Victor Hugo and histories of France. The masterpiece of Vierge's artistic genius is his set of 257 images to Don Quixote, published posthumously in a limited four-volume edition (Scribners, 1906). "Horne had a voice of extraordinary range, rich and tangy in timbre, with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top... In concert she once achieved the feat of singing in a single programme Rossini arias and Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene, proof of her exceptional versatility. Throughout her lengthy career she was an admired recitalist, singing lieder, mélodies, Spanish and American songs with equal aplomb." Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online.

Description
Madrid: Zaj / Artes Graficas Luis Perez, 1967. A near fine copy, with minimal toning to loose leaves; housed in a remarkably well-preserved copy of the printed cardboard box. Uncommon, especially signed, with 8 OCLC records located in North America.. Limited Edition. Quarto. Printed cardboard box housing 88 leaves of concrete poetry (10.5 x 8.25 in.); this copy SIGNED by Castillejo to the interior of the box's lid (dated Köln, 1969). Translating its title from a passage in John Cage's Silence—"beware of that which is breathtakingly beautiful, for at any moment the telephone may ring or the airplane come down in a vacant lot"— this is one of the more literary instances of the cartón genre developed by the Spanish artist's collective Zaj; a form of concrete poetry closely aligned with minimalism, performance, and mail art. Critic, poet, and diplomat for the Spanish government, José Luis Castillejo here mobilizes wordplay, suggestion, and visual composition to create a flexible sequence of 88 physical poems, with key references to a number of contemporary artists and writers, including William S. Burroughs, John Cage, Yves Klein, R. D. Laing, Susan Sontag, and Andy Warhol.

Description
London: G. Ingram, 1860. Good to very good. Toned with some dust soiling, edge wear. Three large open tears to "Hot Water", with approx. 2-3 square inches of loss, but not affecting overall image conveyance.. Two (2) large Vinegar Valentines produced by G. Ingram of London. These particular Vinegar Valentines are quite large compared to others produced at the time; one here measures 25.5" by 9.25", while the other measures 21" by 8.25". Most would generally be about a third or a half as tall. Each of the two items depict harried husbands struggling with childcare. The two items here include: [Hot Water]. London: G Ingram, [1860s]. Broadside (21" by 8.25"), verso blank. Depicts an unhappily married man juggling several children in a tub marked "Hot Water" with the following rhyme: "For a pure domestic bliss, / You will with me agree that this is not amiss! / And when a happy married man you be, / 'Tis very certain that this your lot will see." The number "9" is printed in the lower right-hand corner. [Unhappy Wretch]. London: G Ingram, [1860s]. Broadside (25.5" by 9.25"), verso blank. Depicts a harried father juggling several children, with the following rhyme: "Unhappy wretch who is left to keep / The children quiet and get 'em to sleep, / Who has to nurse them on his lap, / Wash them all and make the pap; / It's quite enough to turn your noddle, / You poor forlorn old Molly Coddle." The number "7" is printed in the lower right-hand corner. Ingram was primarily a maker of fine Valentines with lace paper, Victorian scrap, and the occasional poem printed on silk. To see him producing Vinegar Valentines, which are markedly more satirical and less finely produced, is unusual.

Description
1958. [LGBTQ][Pulp] Highsmith, Patricia. Pen name "Claire Morgan." The Price of Salt. New York: Bantam Books, Bantam New Edition 1958. 7th Printing. Groundbreaking lesbian pulp novel The Price of Salt, originally published in hardcover by Coward-McCann in 1952. This edition is among the earliest mass-market disseminations of an overtly lesbian love story with a hopeful ending, an anomaly in midcentury queer fiction. The novel follows the emotionally charged relationship between two women, Therese Belivet, a young aspiring set designer, and Carol Aird, a sophisticated suburban housewife, set against the backdrop of 1950s America. Their romance challenges both social convention and internalized repression, with Carol ultimately choosing love over custody of her child. Highsmith's refusal to conclude the novel with tragedy or moral punishment marked a radical departure from contemporary lesbian fiction, which typically ended in death, madness, or heterosexual conformity. The present copy retains the original mass-market cover featuring a sepia-toned photographic design of two silhouetted women in a domestic interior, reinforcing the novel's central theme of quiet yet transformative intimacy. Binding fragile and cocked, front and rear wraps worn, creases, abrasions, and separation starting along joints; spine flaked with some text loss. Front cover holding with tape. Some pages coming loose from textblock. Moderately toned and brittle throughout. Scarce.

Description
Dallas: Stamps-Baxter Music & Printing Co, 1939. 198 x 135 mm. [1], 2-48 = 48 pp. Bound in stapled paper wrappers, soiled on front and back covers. Pages slightly yellowed, some foxing and staining throughout, pp. 23-26 loose. An advertisement for a new Stamps-Baxter publication, "Favorite Radio Songs No. 2" on pp. 46-48. With some condition problems, and priced accordingly. A fascinating piece of Dallas radio history, being program notes of an All-Night broadcast of early Southern Gospel Music on KRLD Radio Station (July 1-2, 1939). The pamphlet contains information and photographs of 30 obscure, now forgotten Gospel singing groups from all over the American South, and thus remains a valuable source of information not obtainable elsewhere. According to the introductory article by Harvey A. Armstrong, the purpose of the All-Night Bradcast was "to help promote and encourage nation-wide and better gospel singing." Many famous songwriters and Southern gospel music composers were in attendance that night as well, including Luther G. Presley, Albert E. Brumley, Wilbur Wilson, and V.O. Fossett, all of whom worked exlusively for Stamps-Baxter Books at the time. Their portraits can be found herein as well. Stamps-Baxter Music & Printing Co. is responsible for the publication of many country, gospel, and bluegrass "standards," including "Precious Moments" and "Farther Along." As a way of promoting their music, the company sponsored gospel quartets to sing their music in churches throughout the United States, many of which performed in the present All-Night program.

Stockholm: Wahlström & Widstrand. Very Good+. 1958. 1st Edition (softcover issue). Softcover. [modest wear to extremities, short diagonal creasing to bottom right corner of front cover and the front endpaper]. Trade PB (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED (in English) and SIGNED by Gustaf Unger: "To ____ / with sincere thanks for / your constant interest and aid / in my efforts, from your friend / (1/2) the author / Gustaf." The Unger twins first came to Hollywood around the early 1950s, and as members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association were fixtures on the local scene for decades thereafter. They were regular patrons of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences research library as late as the late 1980s; I remember them as dapper elderly gentlemen who were unfailingly polite -- and that one was never seen without the other. (Bertil died in 1990, Gustaf in 1995.) Their book is entirely in Swedish, and was obviously intended to burnish their Hollywood credentials for their back-home readers, but can be enjoyed by the non-Swedish reader for the photographs alone, which feature (as does the cover design) a rather high proportion of buxom blonde actresses. For translation of the captions, Google is your friend. (Example: "Joan Crawford, Hollywoods snyggaste av de stjärnor som hållit sig genom åren." = "Joan Crawford, Hollywood's prettiest of the stars who have endured through the years.") A highlight of the photographs is a distinctly different view of the famous Jayne Mansfield-Sophia Loren breast-off -- a much friendlier depiction of this encounter than the Loren-side-eye version you've probably seen -- that I've never seen published anywhere else. .
