Description
Various. No binding. Near Fine. Five vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) black-and-white photos, near fine. Jazz artist Billy Taylor appeared on hundreds of albums and composed more than 300 songs during his career, which spanned over six decades. His 1963 song "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" dealt with civil rights issues and became the unofficial anthem of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. It was selected as "one of the greatest songs of the sixties" by the New York Times. Engaging and educating more audiences and young people was a central part of Taylor's career. He was the Wilbur D. Barrett Chair of Music at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Duke Ellington Fellow at Yale. Besides publishing instructional books on jazz, he taught jazz courses at Howard University, Long Island University, the Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. (Wikipedia) Cook and Morton, Penguin Guide to Jazz, 2002, p. 1421: "While Taylor has become best known as one of the most experienced and respected forces in jazz education in America, his talents as a performer should be recognized more than they are. He played with everyone from Stuff Smith to Charlie Parker... and having worked with Machito stood him in good enough standing to make his Latin-flavoured outtings plausible. Taylor's affinities are essentially with bop, [but with] ...a cultivated, gentlemanly sound." Of the five photos, one is of him as a disc jockey surrounded by albums, with photographer stamp and 1961 date stamp on verso. The one of him at the piano has mimeographed text on verso referring to his television appearance on Black Journal in 1972. There are three other portraits of Taylor, all ca. 1970s, one of them with photographer stamp on verso.

Various. No binding. About Fine. New York, Los Angeles: Various, 1940s-1970s. Set of 3 vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) black-and-white glossy silver gelatin photos. About fine. Bernard "Buddy" Rich (1917-1987) was an American jazz drummer, songwriter, conductor and bandleader. He is considered one of the most influential drummers of all time. Brilliant and innovative, he was known to be volatile and difficult to work with and for. (Wikipedia) The earliest photo is from his 1941 appearance in the Paramount film Las Vegas Nights when he was part of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. The second is a ca. late-1940s talent agency photo. The last is likely from the early-1970s when he opened his own nightclub, "Buddy's Place", in Manhattan while incorporating rock elements into his repertoire to adapt to changing tastes.

Description
1945. Japanese American family photo archive documenting the intersection of Nisei military service and wartime incarceration through a postwar visit to the Gila River Relocation Center in Arizona, circa 1945-1948. Executive Order 9066, signed on February 19, 1942, authorized the forced removal of Japanese Americans from the West Coast, and Gila River opened on the Gila River Indian Reservation in July 1942, eventually confining more than 13,000 people. These photographs capture the striking contrast at the center of the Japanese American wartime experience: a U.S. Army serviceman in uniform returning to relatives whose lives had been shaped by incarceration under the same government he served. Photo archive of 9 silver gelatin photographs, each approximately 3" x 4", Gila River Relocation Center, Rivers, Arizona, circa 1945-1948. A Japanese American soldier wearing his U.S. Army uniform and peaked cap stands beside an older Japanese American woman, with an older couple and two younger women in family group portraits, and at a picnic where fruit, bottles, and papers rest on a blanket beneath desert trees. Three Japanese American women stand before the Gila River Servicemen's Monument, the memorial dedicated in 1944 to honor Japanese American men serving in the armed forces while many of their parents, siblings, and relatives remained confined within relocation centers. Other photographs show a young child seated on a wooden porch outside a plain building and a woman standing in the Arizona desert beside a towering saguaro cactus. Together, the photographs place military service, family reunion, and memory within the landscape of one of the largest Japanese American incarceration sites in the United States. This photo archive documents the family's visit to the Gila River center after the war. By the time these photographs were taken, the camp was closing or had recently closed, transforming a site of confinement into a place of remembrance and reunion. The Servicemen's Monument serves as the archive's symbolic centerpiece, linking the soldier's wartime service to the incarceration experience of his family. Rather than depicting combat or military life, the photographs show a serviceman returning to relatives and revisiting a landscape defined by wartime exclusion. The resulting images document one of the central paradoxes of Japanese American history during the Second World War: loyal military service performed alongside the mass confinement of family members whose constitutional rights had been suspended. Light edgewear and toning, with printed decorative "Elko" borders; overall in very good condition.

Description
1939. Women in military press photograph archive, 1938-1950, documents the expansion of female participation in armed services across Britain and the United States in the years surrounding the Second World War. The images provide direct visual evidence of recruitment, training, and institutional integration of women into military structures prior to and during global conflict. A 1938 photograph of women drilling in England records early organization of the Women's Territorial Army, showing recruits in civilian dress arranged in formation under instruction, while accompanying caption text identifies participants as a cross section of society including mothers, titled women, and wage earning workers. A 1943 image captures seven uniformed women raising their hands to take an oath of service in the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve, reflecting rapid mobilization following the program's announcement and the subsequent enlistment of thousands of women. This archive documents the formalization of women's military roles and the institutional recognition of their service within wartime national defense efforts. Archive of 5 original silver gelatin press photographs, dating from 1938 to 1950, measuring approximately 7.5 x 5.75 inches to 10 x 8 inches. One image from 1943 shows 7 women in uniform with their hands raised to take their oath of service. A man reads to them from a paper, their eyes fixed on his face, some serious and others smiling. Article caption glued to verso reads, "Lady Leathernecks-On February 13, 1943, the Marine Corps Women's Reserve program was announced and women swarmed to recruiting offices until a peak of nearly 19,000 women Marines was reached during World War II." During World War II every major participating nation enlisted women for its armed services. Though the majority served in nursing or clerical support roles, over 500,000 women filled combat roles in anti-aircraft units in Britain and Germany, as well as front-line units in the Soviet Union. One image from 1938 shows women in tight rows wearing street clothes, backs straight and arms at their sides as an officer stands in front of them, instructing them. Inscription beneath image reads "Women drill in England." Article glued to verso reads in part "Training Britain's Blouse and Skirt Army...about 120 women are among the first recruits of the newly formed women's territorial army of England....Many of the members of this blouse and skirt army are mothers who leave their children at home, while others are titled women and working girls who have permission from their employers to take army training." Produced during a period when total war required the reorganization of labor and military participation, these photographs align with broader historical developments in which women entered roles previously reserved for men, including administrative, logistical, and in some nations direct combat support positions such as anti aircraft operations. The archive captures both the early stages of institutional acceptance and the normalization of women's presence within military systems, contributing visual evidence to the study of gender, labor, and wartime policy. Light wear consistent with press handling, including minor surface marks and attached caption remnants; images remain clear and legible. Overall very good.

1990. Richard Wright. Native Son. The First Edition Library - FEL. Shelton, CT. Hardcover Facsimile First Edition that looks just like the true first edition that cost about $3000 today. Native Son (1940) is a novel written by the American author Richard Wright. It tells the story of 20-year-old Bigger Thomas, a black youth living in utter poverty in a poor area on Chicago's South Side in the 1930s. While not apologizing for Bigger's crimes, Wright portrays a systemic causation behind them. Bigger's lawyer, Boris Max, makes the case that there is no escape from this destiny for his client or any other black American since they are the necessary product of the society that formed them and told them since birth who exactly they were supposed to be. Fine in a Fine dust jacket in a Very Good slipcase. These Facsimile Editions are becoming scarce and collectable in their own right.

Description
8vo, modern 1/2 morocco and marbled boards, gilt title on spine, 16 pp. Final text leaf neatly remaringed, no loss of text, minor foxing and normal aging; otherwise very good, a very nice copy. Anthony Benezet (1713-1784) was born into a French Huguenot family that moved to London when he was two years old. At seventeen, his family moved to Philadelphia, and he became a Quaker. He became a teacher and established the first public school for girls in America, and along the way he managed to teach slave children from his home. In 1770, with the help of the Quakers, he set up the Negro School at Philadelphia, which he taught at until his death. The current work has the distinction of being one of the earliest and most important anti-slavery efforts printed in America before the Revolutionary War. ANB. Evans 8542. Sabin 4676.

Second Story Books, ABAA (United States)
Description
[n.p.], [c. 1700]. Hardcover. Octavo, [2], [620 pages] (unpaginated; 310 leaves). In Good condition. Manuscript in ink, appearing to date to the late 17th- or early 18th century. Italian Language. Bound in 19th-century brown-paper boards. Boards show significant wear to edges, especially along joints. Text block nearly disbound from boards, but all pages apparently present. Text in a consistent cursive hand, legible with occasional dialectal features. Light age toning and minor wear to text block edges. The manuscript preserves a full-scale vernacular biography of Pope Sixtus V (Felice Peretti, 1521–1590) in four parts (parte) further subdivided into chapters (capitolo). This comprises the bulk of the codex (pp. 1–594). This vita belongs to the long-form narrative tradition also represented in Vatican Barberini Lat. 4971 and related codices, marked by its opening formula (“Nacque Sisto V nella Marca, cioè nel Castello delle Grotte…”) and by the inclusion of contemporary anecdotes, satirical pasquinate, and popular commentary. The copyist has added a distinctive opening homage (“Non si vidde né tempi passati né si vedrà in futuro Istoria che l’eguagli…”) not found in other witnesses. Two appended sections follow the biography: Sentenze di Sisto V dette in varie occasioni, raccolte da certi messeri (pp. 595–599). A collection of 27 aphoristic sayings attributed to the pontiff, paralleled in Vat. lat. 9721 and the Sentenze tradition.(1982). Relazione della morte di Francesco Peretti, nipote di Sisto V (pp. 600–619). An account of the murder of Sixtus’ nephew Francesco (Franco) Peretti, a common appendix in this branch of the tradition. Shelved Room A. This is an Italian vernacular manuscript copy of the Life of Pope Sixtus V, Pope from 1585 to 1590. The text records the life and deeds of Felice Peretti, the friar who rose from humble beginnings to become a Pope celebrated for his administrative reforms, infrastructural projects in Rome, and fierce defense of ecclesiastical authority. The handwriting style is suggestive late 17th-century or early 18th-century chancery script. Characteristic features include long, sinuous ascenders, looped descenders, and the fluid ligaturing of common letter pairs, all of which reflect the formal administrative hands then employed in legal and notarial contexts. While in the cancelleresca cursive tradition (with elongated ascenders, a consistent long ſ, and looped h and p) which originated in the late 16th-century, the execution here is looser and more provinicial point to a vernacular or monastic copyist in the early 18th-century. A contemporary note on the front free end page attributes the work to Cicciarelli (likely a reference to Antonio Ciccarelli, d. 1599, continuator of Platina’s Vitae Pontificum). No surviving catalogued manuscript of this branch, including Barberini 4971 and its siblings, explicitly names Ciccarelli, and modern inventories treat the authorship of these manuscripts as anonymous. The present attribution may reflect a scribal or local tradition recognizing Ciccarelli’s authority as an early biographer of Sixtus V. . 1402628. Special Collections.

Victor, Colorado: By the author, 1916. Very good. Three issues, n. d. (ca 1916); 6 1/2 x 5 1/4; pp. 14, 12, 12 respectively; loose leaves, folded unto each other; manuscript entries and drawings and newspaper clippings; generally mild wear, with occasional spotting and a bit of wear to edges; overall in very good condition. A truly-delightful, WWI-era, teenager's periodical from the gold-mining town of Victor, Colorado - it was replete with important news of the day, delivered in both manuscript and in the form of newspaper clippings, including the bust of a moonshiners' outfit, the big success of a ladies' minstrel show at the VIctor Opera House, the formation of the Victor Library Association, and the arrival of new 2c-stamps - "almost white, showing plainly the effect of the European War in causing a shortage of dye stuffs." Severe weather and snowstorms were often mentioned, including the headline: "Weather Fierce!" in one of the journals. The author, calling herself Shakespearibus, Editor in Chief, also penned a manuscript editorial in each issue, in the form of a letter to her older sister, in which she shared gossip and in one instance exclaimed: "Enuff is enuff. I have done myself quite proud in getting up this edition of the gazette. I don't care if you show it to your friends."

Cambridge:: Cambridge University Press, 1995., 1995. Large 8vo. xiv, 429, [1] pp. Illustrations, index. Black cloth, dust-jacket. Near fine. ISBN: 0521444896 First edition. "This, the first full-length biography of E.E. Barnard, tells the remarkable tale of endurance and achievement of one of the leading astronomers of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Barnard scoured the heavens endlessly, leaving an astonishing legacy of observations -- of planets, satellites, comets, double stars, bright and dark nebulae, and globular clusters -- that make him one of the greatest observers of all time. / This book traces Barnard's life from impoverished origins to status as an internationally recognized astronomer. His success as a professional astronomer unfolds in 1842 as he discovers the fifth satellite of Jupiter (the first since Galileo) and pioneers wide-angle photography of the Milky Way, which leads to the recognition of dark nebulae--clouds of dust on the galactic plane. / Beautifully illustrated throughout, this book provides a complete history of Barnard's fascinating life and work, based largely on previously unpublished archival material, that will be of interest to astronomers and historians of science." [CUP] Also issued in paperback in 2007; this is the hardcover original issue. REVIEW: [1] ". . . Barnard's achievements are remarkable, and with this biography William Sheehan has given us the first detailed account of Barnard's step-by-step journey toward scientific prominence . . . .a well-written and meticulously researched biography that makes judicious use of voluminous archives. With its numerous photographs (including many of Barnard's own) it is a handsome and well-produced volume . . . .this biography recounts an inspiring example of what one individual can accomplish with hard work and dedication, against all odds. It is a lesson that should not go unheeded by students or professionals, even in the era of big science." Steven J. Dick, Science. [2] ". . . chock full of footnotes and contains an extensive bibliography. Sheehan's prose is eloquent and easily understandable to Astronomy readers. Barnard's photographs appear throughout, and Sheehan quotes frequently from Barnard's own papers. The Immortal Fire Within not only gives the reader a comprehensive overview of Barnard's life, but it also conveys a real feeling for what it was like to be an astronomer at the turn of the century, when the science was undergoing profound transformations." Description
New York: Random House. Near Fine. (c.1942). First Edition. Hardcover. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [nice clean copy with minimal shelfwear, spine slightly turned, minor bumping to lower front corner]. Novel about the young widow of an up-and-coming politician who's killed in a solo car accident, and her subsequent affair with the war correspondent who's been assigned by his newspaper to write the dead man's biography -- and the tension that arises from the writer's gradual discovery that the truth about his subject doesn't quite line up with his public image. Basis for the 1942 film of the same name, directed by George Cukor, which was already in pre-production when the novel was published in April 1942, and was the second teaming of stars Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. The Grosset & Dunlap edition of the book, issued as a tie-in with the movie, is quite common, but the first edition is remarkably scarce. Although not marked as such, this copy comes from the library of noted M-G-M producer/writer Carey Wilson (who was not involved in the making of the film, although it was made at M-G-M, with Victor Saville as producer and screenplayed by Donald Ogden Stewart.) NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. .

Description
New York: William Morrow and Company. Good+. 1936. First Edition. Hardcover. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [shelfworn book, with some external soiling, bumping and fraying at several corners, one-time owner's inked initials plus date & place of purchase along edge of rear pastedown (concealed beneath jacket flap)]. The author's first mystery novel published under his own name (following a handful of earlier collaborative efforts with Charles Hunt Marshall as "Peter Hunt"), and the introduction of his amateur detective character, "the ancient and august Lord Broghville." While visiting friends in America, Lord B. gets involved in solving a baffling murder, as one does. (The jacket blurb declares that the creation of this character "will endear him to mystery-story fans" and that "you will meet him again in other mysteries by Mr. Yates," but the character apparently turned out to be a one-off. Yates himself turned out just a few more mystery novels before devoting himself primarily to screenwriting.) NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. .
