Description
Orinda, California: Donna Day Westerman, N.D.. Limited and Signed Edition. Stiff wraps. Fine. Westerman, Donna Day. No. 13 of 20 (book edition; there are another 20 in a fine print edition), tall, thin quarto size, single wood engraving on four folded leaves, signed by the artist. Donna Day Westerman is a printmaker, painter and book artist in the Bay Area of California. [She is] "interested in traditional and historical media — particularly, woodcuts, wood-engravings and egg tempera — used in a contemporary manner. Working from close observation, and occasionally referring to [her] own photographs, [she] conceptually reduce[s] realistic nature to calligraphic or glyph-like notations. A kind of erasure takes place as the visual abundance... is distilled into the essence of the place. Other senses, such as sound and touch often inform the visual... A challenge... has been to capture the powerful ephemeral forms of fog and water in the hard-edged medium of wood... the medium itself determines much of the outcome." (n. b., "Artist's Statement" from the web site of the artist.) The present volume is inspired by a whale skeleton found on Lummi Island, Washington. ___DESCRIPTION: Original handmade paper covered boards heightened in foils, deckled edges, printed title strip laid onto upper board, printed label with author's name inlaid to lower board, backstrip opens so the accordion style format can be displayed in a connected elongated format, single-panel wood engraving printed in black 4" by 20", Optima type, Arches 88 paper, 12"by 4" when closed, five folded leaves including title page and colophon, limited edition, number 13 of 20, signed by Donna Day Westerman. ___CONDITION: A fine copy, no flaws to the paper covers, leaves are bright, rich impression, a fine copy signed and numbered by Donna Day Westerman; acquired by us directly from the Artist, new. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell. Paris: Librairie Honore Champion, 1908. Hardcover. Near fine. Quarto size, 390 pp., in French, with folding maps. This volume comprises a geographic study of the Sinai Peninsula, in Egypt, written by French archaeologist and Egyptologist Raymond Weill; it is a thorough examination of the topography and climate of the region, and their effects on the locality and development of civilisation there, aided by detailed maps throughout. Although it is part of a series, this book is a stand-alone; it is also in a lovely custom binding, as it was probably issued in the original wraps. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter red leather with marbled paper boards in red with flecks of gilt, the spine with five raised bands, five gilt illustrations of the Star of David, and gilt lettering, top edge gilt, red marbled endpapers, title page with publisher's device in black, various tables and maps in black throughout, three fold-out maps and one fold-out topographical chart, some in black and white and some in colour; quarto size (10" by 6.75"), pagination: [i-vii] viii-ix [x] 1-380. Please note the text is in French. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, and the interior is clean and bright; some rubbing to the corners and to the head, tail, and edges of the spine, some age-toning to the outer margins of the pages, and there is a stamp on the verso of the front free endpaper, likely a prior owner's, with the initials "A. J. O."; even with its few flaws, still a lovely work.    ___POSTAGE:  International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
ABC Television. No binding. Near Fine. [New York: ABC-TV, 1974-75]. Set of six vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) and 7 x 9" (18 x 23 cm) black-and-white photos. Most have affixed descriptive text, overall near fine. Set in a middle-class African American neighborhood in Washington, D.C., That's My Mama revolved around the character Clifton Curtis (played by Clifton Davis), a man in his mid-20s who worked as a barber at Oscar's Barber Shop, the family barber shop he inherited from his late father. While Clifton enjoyed being a bachelor, his loving but tart-tongued and opinionated mother Eloise "Mama" Curtis, played by Theresa Merritt, wanted him to settle down and find a nice wife. Additional characters such as Clifton's two best friends -- Earl, played by Teddy Wilson, an easy-going mailman and Junior, played by Ted Lange, a suave and good-humored ladies' man -- came and went over the course of a typical day at Oscar's Barber Shop.
