Text in Koberger's gothic type in two columns, 51 to 53 lines. Ff. 1-231 [only, of 468], bound after: Interpretation of Hebrew Names, ff. 1926. First Edition. BLACK, Jack. You Can't Win. New York: Macmillan, 1926. Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $8500.First edition of this cult autobiography about life as a burglar before automatic guns and getaway cars, with a foreword by acclaimed realist author Robert Herrick, in scarce original dust jacket.""The America of career burglar Jack Black's 1926 novel You Can't Win is one of rampant crime, drug use, fugitivity, and punitive justice"" (Art in America). ""It is a good thing that many law-abiding people are reading this remarkable autobiography of an ex-criminal, 13 years removed from the criminal class, but in his time as complete a criminal as any seeker for authentic information could desire. The effort of organized society to protect itself from the outlaw element may reasonably gain power from understanding the enemy, and in this book the reader meets and mingles with criminals almost, one might say, as he meets and mingles with actual friends and acquaintances… Sincerity has perhaps created art; at any rate the law-abiding reader will never come nearer feeling like a burglar at work"" (The Atlantic). Contemporary owner signature.Book near-fine, with a few small spots of soiling to interior, tiny mark to front board, and small bump to top edge. Dust jacket very good, with only minor soiling, a couple tiny open tears just affecting ""W"" of cover title, light rubbing and toning to extremities, and a few tape repairs to verso and one to recto of spine head. A desirable copy.

Description
Culver City, CA: Self Published, 1975. First Edition. Near Fine. First printing, limited issue of 150 copies. 281, [3] pp. Bound in publisher's white wraps printed in black. Near Fine with light toning and soiling to covers, small chip at head of spine, and scattering of tiny stains to upper edge of textblock. Contents very lightly toned. A scarce self-published anarchist novel. The author could only afford to print 150 copies, which he distributed gratis. Enrico Arrigoni (1894-1986) was an individualist anarchist influenced by the German philosopher Max Stirner. Arrigoni was born in Italy and began working in a factory and taking part in anarchist actions as a teenager. He fled to Switzerland during the First World War to escape the draft, then spent the next few years moving from country to country to escape police attention. Arrigoni moved to the United States in the 1920s, and apart from a stint in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War remained there for the rest of his life. He wrote in the afterword to this novel: "This book is written especially for the working class, the masses which the totalitarians are so eager to claim for their own, to show them communism doesn't mean emancipation, but total exploitation and slavery for them, under the tyrannical rule of the commissars.

Description
Issues 1-8 (of 9?). Several black & white photographs. Eight vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, orig. stitching. Beijing: Beijing guxue yuan 北京古學院, 1939-40. A good run, apparently lacking only the final volume, of the serial publication of Beijing guxue yuan, the Beijing Academy for Ancient Studies, was founded in 1937 following the Japanese occupation of northern China, including Beijing. The Academy was a conservative institution dedicated to teaching and publishing in a traditional Confucian vein. Its history is described in the first issue of the series, and its bylaws are included in an appendix. Other content includes studies of the ancient lexicographical work Shuo wen jie zi 說文解字 [Explain the Graphs to Unravel the Written Words], historical geography, notes on the ancient philosophical works Laozi and Zhuangzi, a study on Confucius’s disciples, and epigraphy, as well as literature in various genres. The organization had close ties to the Japanese occupation authorities during the second Sino-Japanese War, the part of World War II that took place in China. The collection gives an insight into the intellectual life of collaborationist circles in Beijing wartime. Fine set.

[N.d., ca 1970s]. Original large-format color print in presentation mat with title card affixed to mat below image. View size 49cm x 38cm (ca 19" x 15"); overall dimensions 60cm x 51cm. Title card inscribed in black ink: "For Bob MacNeal, a fellow photographer, with best wishes / Arnold Newman," undated. Mat lightly soiled, with a few small chips and abrasions to extremities; image clean and unfaded, Near Fine. ca NOTE: the mat appears permanently fixed to the photograph, as presented by the photographer; we have not attempted to examine the print outside the mat. Impressive large-format portrait by Newman, here inscribed to one "Bob MacNeal," identified as a "fellow photographer," though we can find no photographers of the period who used this spelling. Possibly a misspelling of Bob MacNeil (still active), the prominent Canadian fashion photographer; possibly a misspelling of Bob McNeill (d.2007), the prominent African-American documentary photographer; or possibly the correct spelling of an acquaintance of no notable prominence at all. Undated, but ca. early 1970s, a superlative image of the Ethiopian Emperor, boldly inscribed and signed by Newman below image.

Description
Metz, 1801. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. Engraved frontispiece. Modern boards. Uncut and fresh. First separate edition, “the best work on the subject” (Caillet, tr). This book provides a comprehensive treatment of Vehmic (or Fehmic) courts, cruel and corrupt regional tribunals in Westphalia, Germany during the Middle Ages. These courts, which existed from the time of Charlemagne until their abolishment in 1811, were granted jurisdiction by the Holy Roman Emperor and had the power to sentence execution. Judges were members of a fraternal order initiated at underground ceremonies, and court proceedings were often held in secret; the only evidence that a trial had taken place would be the executed corpse hanging from a tree the next day. Common victims of the court were Jews, heretics, and witches. This nonfiction account derives from an earlier novel by the same author. Vehmic courts have been the subject of numerous fictitious stories, including Sherlock Holmes, Thackeray’s Vanity Fair, and stories about the Illuminati by many authors. Caillet 1262.

Description
N.P., 1943. Near fine. 7" x 11¾". Flexible faux leather post-bound album. 98 pages, the first 38 with 109 adhesive mounted photographs and rest of the pages are blank. Photos measure 3" x 4" and approximately three quarters are captioned. Album and contents near fine or better, a few photos a bit loose from adhesive. This is a photo album containing 109 images from 31 well-known movies of the 1930s and early 1940s. Each photo was taken from the screen while the photographer was viewing the film inside a theater. About three-quarters of the images have handwritten captions, mostly the year of the film or the name of the actor(s) seen in the shot, though a few have a brief synopsis of the scene. We see Ronald Reagan and Errol Flynn in Santa Fe Trail, and several photographs show scenes from the 1935 film Mutiny On The Bounty. There are a few shots from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Dr. Kildare's Strange Case. Several of the films starred Wallace Beery; we see him with Lionel Barrymore and Ronald Reagan in The Bad Man, and with Leo Carrillo (best known as Pancho on The Cisco Kid) in the 1940 Western, 20 Mule Team. There is also a photo of a scene from Boom Town showing Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. A fantastic group of images depicting scenes from some of the major films of the 1930s and '40s.

London: Eyre and Spottiswoode,. One of Only Fifty Signed - Cecil Aldin at His Most Characteristic Handsomely Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe ALDIN, Cecil Aldin, illustrator. HARE, Kenneth. Roads and Vagabonds. [London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1930]. Signed Limited Edition. One of only 50 numbered copies, this being no. 42, signed by both Cecil Aldin and Kenneth Hare. Large quarto (10 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches; 273 x 187 mm.). viii, 189, [1, blank] pp. Two inserted full-color plates and numerous color-tinted illustrations throughout the text. Handsomely bound ca. 1960 by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in full maroon crushed morocco, covers ruled in gilt, spine with five raised bands, elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt-ruled board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. A fine, elegant copy. A particularly charming example of Cecil Aldin's mature work, Roads and Vagabonds captures the artist's enduring fascination with the English countryside - its inns, lanes, sporting life, and gently comic rural characters. Aldin's illustrations, at once affectionate and keenly observed, helped define the visual language of early 20th-century British sporting and travel books. The limitation of just fifty signed copies places this among the scarcest of Aldin's illustrated books, seldom encountered on the market, and almost always in lesser bindings. The present example is significantly enhanced by its later binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, the great London firm associated with some of the finest decorative bindings of the modern era, here executed in a restrained but luxurious style that complements the work beautifully.

New York: Harper & Bros, 1921. 315p., very good very early reprint (at least by August of 1921) in tan cloth boards. Personal inscription signed by the author and dated August 24, 1921, the year of publication. According to Zempel, 1920s books from Harper & Bros must state first edition. This does not. However, the date of the inscription makes it very early, likely a second. San Francisco novel, a serious piece of fiction concerning the city's underclass. The inscription is a curious one, reading "To Mary Isobel / in some trepidation and / craving her in[g]ulgence / from" [signed in full]. Sounds as if Mary Isobel provided material for the book, which Dobie has manipulated.

Maroon textured paper covered cards. Good
Description
PHILMONT, NY: SENTINEL PRINTING HOUSE, 1891. Heavy cards. Maroon textured paper covered cards. Good. 74 pages. 22 x 15 cm. Recipes attributed to members of the community with local advertisements giving the reader a genuine feel for the community. This cookbook was part of an effort to raise money for improvements to the church - building a rectory and erecting an iron fence around all the Church property which was celebrated by a plaque inside the building in 1893. This particular copy was owned by Nancy (Hankins) Bowman (1850-1924) - she signed her name on the front free end paper: "Mrs. Garry Bowman, Philmont, Col. Co. (Columbia County). Nancy used this cookbook as a storing place for her treasured recipes. Here we find a "Sallad Dressing" recipe pinned to the interior of the front cover. We also find other recipes written on to the blank pages and empty spaces. Pages are soiled and toned. Covers rubbed.

New York/London/Toronto: Samuel French, Inc.. Good. (c.1967). Early printing. Stapled wraps. NOISBN . [an "actor-used" copy with extensive underlining and annotation (see notes), worn along spine, some dog-earing to covers and early pages, some discoloration and light soiling to covers, slight splitting at both ends of spine]. (stage diagram) Allen's early theatrical success, filmed in 1969 under the unsubtle direction of Howard Morris, with Jackie Gleason taking over the role played by Lou Jacobi on the stage, as head of an American family trapped in an unnamed "Middle-European" country behind the Iron Curtain; filmed again for TV in 1994, with Allen himself directing and starring. This particular copy of the play belonged to actress Fritzi Burr (whose name and address appear on the title page), and has her lines as "Marian" extensively underlined in red and black ink throughout, along with occasional stage directions and reminders-to-herself in the margins (usually in pencil). In addition, she has written in the names of some of the other actors in this production on the page listing the play's characters; these include F. Murray Abraham, Dick Van Patten, and Hans Conried (in the Jacobi role). My research has not definitively dated this particular production; one of Abraham's biographies states that he appeared in the play in "various cities" in 1966-67, which suggests it might have been the first national touring company, but I've also found specific reference to this ensemble appearing in a production that played a week in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in late December 1967 and early January 1968; Conried was also still appearing in the play as late as 1974. None of the numerous other plays advertised within this volume was published any later than 1967, which again suggests this is a fairly early printing, as does the lack of an ISBN. .

A provocative study that builds on the tradition of the secret ballot. Ackerman and Ayres propose a system of "secret donation booths" in which the government would provide each citizen with a special credit-card account containing fifty "patriot dollars." To use this money, citizens would go to their local ATMs and send it anonymously to their favorite candidate or cause. This would result in the democratization of the political clout that comes from campaign contributions.
