Description
iv, 159 pp. 8vo (200 x 135 mm.), antique calf-backed paste-paper boards, red morocco lettering-piece on spine, spine gilt. Paris: Chariot, Boileau & Joullain, 1773. A scarce sale catalogue, priced throughout in a contemporary hand and with running totals, featuring a large number of drawings formerly in the Crozat collection. Lempereur (1701-79), a well-known jeweler and local politician, cultivated a close relationship with Mariette, and at Mariette’s sale, Lempereur advised the king on drawings worthy of the royal collection. Gersaint counted Lempereur among his most important clients. Lempereur’s son, Jean Baptiste Denis (1726-96), continued in his footsteps as a passionate collector and patron of the arts. This catalogue describes 1218 lots of paintings (by Guido Reni, An. Carracci, Albani, Mola, Rosa, Panini, Murillo, van Dyck, Rubens, Lairesse, Bril, both J. Brueghels, both D. Teniers, Wouwerman, N. Berghem, van Poelenburgh, Ruysdael, Rembrandt, Dow, Metsu, S. Bourdon, de la Fosse, Largillière, C. Vanloo, F. Boucher, Natoire, Lancret, Chardin, J. Vernet, H. Robert, etc.); drawings (by da Vinci, Raphael, L., Ag. & An. Carracci, Parmigianino, Guercino, Maratti, Tintoretto, Veronese, Giordano, Rubens, van Dyck, Goltzius, Jordaens, Rembrandt, etc., etc.), prints, and sculptures. A number of the paintings come from the Verrue, Hoym, Mignard, Rigaud, Coypel, and Vanloo collections. The bulk of the Italian and Dutch drawings were in the renowned Crozat collection. Nice copy, with useful price annotations. Engraved bookplate of G[eorges] P[annier] (1853-1944), the Parisian art dealer and collector of sale catalogues. ❧ Lugt 2171. Lugt Marques, 1740.

Description
2 p.l., 60 pp. 8vo (189 x 131 mm.), late 19th-cent. marbled boards, red sheep lettering-piece on spine. Paris: Laneuville, Henry & Bonnefons de la Vialle, 1821. A scarce sale catalogue of paintings and several drawings, with nearly all prices in a contemporary hand and several marginal notes, along with a curious letter bound-in at the end. The contents of this sale were probably drawn from the stock of Laneuville (1748-1826) and Bon Thomas Henry (1766-1836). One hand, in ink, has recorded all but a few prices, while another, possibly later and in pencil, has noted the provenance of one picture and several occasions when lots have been combined by the auctioneer. The added letter, addressed to a prince from “Gauthier,” mentions the sale and discusses Laneuville’s purchases. “Gauthier” apologizes for belatedly sending this catalogue to the addressee. This catalogue describes 165 lots, nearly all of which are paintings. It offers works by Murillo, Ant. Carracci, da Cortona, L. Bakhuizen, N. Berchem, Bol, Cuyp, Dou, den Eeckhout, Dujardin, Metsu, Moucheron, Rembrandt, Rubens, Weenix, Wouwerman, Wijnants, S. Bourdon, Drolling, Claude, Leprince, J. Vernet, etc. The entries are fairly extensive and provide notes on provenance, the rarity of an artist’s work, and measurements. An interesting copy of this rare catalogue; in North America, we find only the example at the University of Texas, Austin. Minor foxing in a few places. With the engraved bookplate of G[eorges] P[annier] (1853-1944), the Parisian art dealer and collector of early art auction catalogues, on the front paste-down, and the stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of title. ❧ Lugt 10134. Oxford Art Online (Henry)–“He studied under Charles Landon and Jean-Baptiste Regnault. In 1793 he began to deal in pictures and until 1812 spent part of his time travelling abroad (mainly in Italy) to increase his knowledge of art. In October 1816 he was appointed Commissaire-expert des Musées Royaux, a post he held until his death. Between 1810 and 1830 he assembled an eclectic collection, purchasing either privately or at sales, among them the posthumous sales (1826 and 1827) of Vivant Denon. His tastes in Italian art ranged from the work of Fra Angelico to that of the 17th-century Bolognese masters…In 1834 Henry offered a large part of his collection to the town of Cherbourg, and on 29 July 1835 a museum to house his works was opened on the second floor of the Hôtel de Ville; it was later named the Musée Thomas-Henry.”.

Description
London: Printed by H.C. [Henry Cruttenden] for H. Brome, at the West-end of St. Pauls, 1677. Duodecimo (15 x 10 cm.), [2], 251, [8] pages. Table of contents at rear. Printer's name from Wing. ~ Stated Third Edition corrected, first published in 1669. A classic of seventeenth-century English food writing that belies the author's youthful adventures as handsome courtier, ardent lover, swordsman, pirate, and possible double agent. Later, more serious pursuits include those of naval administrator, scientist, inventor, bibliophile, philosopher, literary executor of Ben Johnson's estate, and founding member of the Royal Society. Digby is also considered the father of the modern wine bottle following his revolutionary manufacturing process that produced a sturdier bottle with a tinted glass that protected the wine from natural light. His cookbook, published after his death and the achievement for which he is best remembered, was based on his manuscript notes and recipes recorded over several years when he devoted himself fully to the pleasures of the table. Today considered a valuable source of period recipes for both beverages (mead, wine, and ale of many types) (pages 1-128) and food and conserves (pages 129-312). This oft-cited work contains what may be the first printing of several modern day staples, including the combination of bacon and eggs for breakfast. Literate and entertaining, Digby's writing still enchants. Internally sound and clean. In later half-calf over marbled boards, with five raised bands and gilt-titled red morocco spine label. Bookplate of the Craig Collection. Scarce. [OCLC locates fifteen copies; Cagle 646; Une Affaire du Gout 70; ESTC R010652; Wing D1429].

Description
London: John Murray, 1896. Third edition. Octavo; publisher's green cloth, decoratively titled in gilt on spine and front cover; xx,[1]-409pp; frontispiece portrait and 17 inserted leaves of plates (halftones); three folding maps inserted in the text, a fourth ("Map of the North Western Frontier of India Showing the Pamir Region and Part of Afghanistan") in rear pocket. Old (and apparently unnecessary) celo-tape reinforcements to hinges; small tape repair to rear map-pocket, but still an attractive, well-preserved copy, straight and sound, with text clean and unmarked - Very Good or better. The folding maps are all present and in good condition; the large folding map of India with pin-point perforations at fold-lines, else quite fresh and clean, Near Fine. Printed bookplate on verso of front flyleaf of the Oregon journalist Gwladys Bowen (1893-1991), with brief pencil gift inscription dated 1974. The third of three London editions, all in the same year (1896). The book is actually a collection of five separate expeditions made by Younghusband over the course of a decade. The first, made in 1884 when he was barely twenty-one years old, was a two-month journey from Rawalpindi north to the Kulu Valley and the Rhotang Pass "in search of the memory of his uncle, Robert Barkley Shaw" who, some twenty years earlier, had become "the first European to enter the city of Kashgar and in so doing had become one of Younghusband's boyhood heroes" (see HOWGEGO III:1021ff).
