Description
Genève (Geneva): Cramer, 1759. First Edition. 3 vols. in one, 12mo (164 x 100mm), pp. [2], 291, [1]; 133, [1], 35, [1]. First printing of the great 18th century philosophical narrative, with all the points correct. Including, the 3 usual cancels, the right title page ornament repeated (pages 193 and 266), the misprints of “que ce ce fut” (page 103 line 4) and “précisément” (page 125 line 4), the correction removing a paragraph break (page 31), the rewritten lines about the Lisbon earthquake (page 41), etc. Contemporary full calf, red calf label, rebacked with the original spine saved and laid down, recornered, marbled endpapers, gilt rubbed, inner paper hinges strengthened, old ink signatures on the endpaper and front blank, tiny signature on the title page, one tissue strengthened tear at the bottom of A2 touching the last 3 lines of text without any loss, otherwise internally quite nice, clean, and very good. Bound without N7 (a blank) and N8 (a notice to the binder) as is usual, agreeing in all respects to what you would have received if you had purchased a copy in sheets, on publication day, then bought the sequels, and then handed them over to the most local Swiss bindery. Ref: PMM 204. There were 18 editions of Candide in 1759. It took 221 years for a clear and convincing bibliography to, first sort them out, and then got accepted, and once accepted our real 1st edition was confirmed as rare. In the last 15 years however, that bibliographical data has been more widely circulated and several 1st editions, that weren’t on the original 22–copy census, have come into market. It is still scarce, more so in a contemporary binding. Candide bides as the epitomic philosophical fable of the French Enlightenment and the genotype of irony without exaggeration, and though it’s laced with more salt than the postwar streets of Carthage, it repeatedly tolls a reminder that, light hearts live long. Most importantly, Candide remains remarkably relevant when examined through contemporary frameworks, functioning as an incisive proto-postcolonial text that anticipates modern discourse on global inequality, systems of oppression, and the limitations of Enlightenment rationality. The novel's scathing portrayal of slavery, conquest, and religious persecution resonates with intersectional analyses that recognize how power structures interlock across racial, gender, and economic dimensions. The savage irony throughout the text dismantles not just philosophical optimism but also European exceptionalism, exposing the hypocrisy of colonial enterprises and religious institutions alike. The narrative's episodic structure—with its global movements between Europe, South America, and the Ottoman Empire—invites discussions of transnationalism and diasporic experience, while Candide's concluding retreat to cultivate his garden has been reinterpreted by ecocritical scholars as both an acknowledgment of environmental interdependence and a potentially problematic withdrawal from systems-level political engagement. “Do you believe,” said Candide, “that men have always massacred each other as they do to-day, that they have always been liars, cheats, traitors, ingrates, brigands, idiots, thieves, scoundrels, gluttons, drunkards, misers, envious, ambitious, bloody–minded, calumniators, debauchees, fanatics, hypocrites, and fools?” “Do you believe,” said Martin, “that hawks have always eaten pigeons when they have found them?” –Voltaire, Candide.

Two volumes. 8vo., original illustrated wrappers and publisher's vellum-backed slipcases. Paris: Gonin, 1937. A unique copy of the most beloved of all Maillol's books. This is the publisher's copy accompanied by 6 autograph letters from Maillol to the publisher discussin varuious aspects of the making of the book. As with all his books, Maillol was closely involved in all aspects of production, and the result is an extremely pleasing work, "perhaps the most harmonious of Maillol's illustrated books" (Garvey). This is copy number 1 of 25 hors commerce copies on large paper containing a double suite of the plates, one in black and white and one in sanguine. It is also accompanied by a somewhat foxed example of the wedding invitation which Maillol printed for Gonin and a letter from Gonin to the original purchaser of this copy. Description
1907. London: Methuen & Co., (1907). 40 pp ads dated Sept 1907. Original deep red cloth with gilt-decorated spine. First Edition of this tale of espionage sited in Russia. The idea for the story came from an actual 1890s revolutionary attempt to blow up the Observatory at Greenwich. Conrad initially planned this to be a short story (titled "Verloc"); however, as he "got into" it, he lengthened it into a full-blown novel. He then strove to make it a popular novel, one that would provide him with the cash he needed to get out from under pressing debts; however, after an initial flourish, sales dropped off and the book was not reprinted until 1914, after the success of CHANCE reawakened interest in Conrad. The initial printing consisted of 2,500 copies, including 500 for Canada and 500 intended for the colonies; however, the good initial reception of the book prompted the publisher to use the colonial copies for the domestic market instead, replacing the colonial half-title and title with the standard domestic one -- "there is no visible evidence of cancellation and for all practical purposes we must regard these copies as indistinguishable from the regular domestic issue" [Cagle]. This is a very good-plus, perhaps near-fine copy: there is some light speckling of the cloth mainly near some edges, and there is an early ink signature and (personal library?) number at the top of the title page. The original endpapers show no cracking, there is scarcely any of the often-pervasive foxing, and atypically the spine is NOT faded. In our experience LORD JIM, YOUTH and THE SECRET AGENT are the toughest of Conrad's first published editions to find in collectible condition. Supino A12.1.0; Cagle A12a(1); a "Modern Library 100" selection and a "Connolly 100 Key Books of the Modern Movement" selection.

Their itinerary took them across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, China, and Japan. When they returned to the United States, the Grants stopped in Yosemite Valley, Utah Territory, and Nebraska before arriving in Chicago. John Russell Young, the book's author, was a journalist and writer invited to accompany the Grants on their journey. While in China, Young formed a friendship with the Qing statesman Li Hongzhang, a relationship that impressed Grant and later led him to recommend Young to President Chester A. Arthur for a diplomatic post in China.

Description
Large, die-cut brochure; 8 x 17 1/2; pp. 2-18; brick-red wraps, decorated with a vignette in black and gold; illustrated with numerous gilded and tinted drawings and photographs, including a fold-out diagram at the end; a few small punctures to edges from removed staples (minor loss of paper to top edge of first leaf); tissue guard at the beginning detached, but present; very-thin, silk strip between pages 2 and 3; in good to very good condition. A stunning piece, it was created by noted artist and graphic designer Lewis Rothe (1874 - 1951) as an advertisement for Asama Maru - a Japanese ocean liner, built in 1927 - 1929 by Mitsubishi for the Nippon Yusen Kaisha shipping company's luxury high-speed trans-Pacific Orient-California (Los Angeles and San Francisco) service. It could provide accomodations for 222 first-class passengers, 96 second-class passengers, and 504 third-class passengers. Leading quite the interesting life, the liner would transport the Japanese Olympic team to Los Angeles for the 1932 Summer Olympics, would carry Hellen Keller in 1937 with a message of good will from President Roosevelt, would be grounded by the Great Hong Kong Typhoon that same year, and would be intercepted and boarded by an armed party from the Royal Navy Light Cruiser HMS Liverpool in 1940. The current brochure was composed of a series of overlaping deck outlines, from Rothe's rendering of the vessel, revealing a progressive cutaway view of the ship. As each die-cut leaf was lifted, showing that particular deck, a description of the area, the accomodations, the amenities, etc. was revealed (the pool, the Great Smoking Room, the Library, the first-class cabins). The large, fold-out diagram at the end showcased a plan of the entire passenger accomodation. The last page contained an exhaustive list of agents and correspondents at principal ports of call and shipping centers.

Description
Merida: Imprenta de Castillo y Compania, 1845. Good plus.. 40pp. Original printed wrappers. Spine chipped, some wear and minor loss at corners. Light dampstaining at fore-edge; scattered, light foxing. Small, faint ink stamp on title page. A scarce appeal by the pro-Mexican faction in the Yucatan for the full reincorporation of the province into Mexico. The region had declared itself an independent republic in 1841 and rebuffed military attempts at reoccupation in 1842 and 1843. In exchange for the restoration of trade, the Yucatan accepted a Mexican provincial governor but retained autonomy until after the Mexican-American War. This pamphlet prints the appeal of the governor, José Tiburcio Lopez, who rather dubiously asserts that the return of the Yucatan to Mexico is the unanimous wish of its inhabitants, and that certain political dalliances, such as those with Texas and the United States, were in fact unwanted foreign interventions. The appendix at the rear prints pro-Mexican declarations from leading Yucatan political figures as well as some information on the contemporary agricultural and manufacturing production of the region. An unusual "Republic of Yucatan" imprint; OCLC locates only a small handful of copies.

Description
Coral Gables, Fla: Wake-Brook House, 1964. Large octavo (22 x 15 cm.), 224 pages. Index. FIRST EDITION, regular issue. There was also a "Sponsor's Edition" limited to 225 signed and numbered copies, with a list of sponsors, but otherwise similar. An interesting collection of recipes from South Florida, which contains an amalgam of dishes focused on the cuisines of the West Indies, especially those that use fruits and vegetables of the Caribbean, with dishes familiar to any American seeking recipes for "entertaining" in that era. The author, Alex Drum Hawkes (1927-1977), was a noted botanist and the author of numerous books on orchids and other tropical plants, as well quite a few cookbooks, usually with a focus on the foods of the West Indies and the Caribbean basin. Several dozen orchids have been named after him. The publishers describe this as "a handmade book" on the copyright page, and its simple design includes boards covered with a bright, decorative, green and white cloth, with a printed paper title label running the length of the spine. The paper of the label is somewhat browned from age, and the cloth is very lightly soiled, but overall the book remains very good or better. Inscribed by the author on the free front endpaper, "For Nika Hazelton – Fond regards of the author, Alex D. Hawkes, December 1968". Nika Hazelton was a renowned cookbook author and food journalist. [OCLC locates thirty-two copies].
