Description
[Vancouver, B.C.]: HM [Heavenly Monkey], 2022. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Bachinski, Walter. One of 30 copies, octavo size, the two stories with 26 total pp., signed by Walter Bachinski, with a printed version of the HM prospectus. Heavenly Monkey includes the tag line on their web site of "Publisher of elusive books". Truer words were never spoken, for the exceptionally high quality of the Heavenly Monkey publications, in every aspect, has gained for Rollin Milroy an enthusiastic and devoted following, with his books extremely difficult to obtain if one is not fortunate enough to be on the subscriber list. This recent publication includes two short stories by Frank L. Stockton (1834-1902), who went against the wishes of his father (to study medicine) and instead became a wood engraver, working for "Hearth and Home" and subsequently for "St. Nicholas Magazine" as assistant editor. One of these two stores, "The Lady, or the Tiger" (originally published in 1882), is his most famous, and met with resounding success. "[A] fantasy story that resembles a fairy tale...it is considered more whimsical and open-ended than most fairy tales" (n.b., info from the online Encyclopedia Britannica, quote from web site Encyclopedia). Per the Heavenly Monkey prospectus, "The Lady, or the Tiger?", with its ambiguous ending, "left readers pestering [Stockton] to know what happened..." resulting in "The Discourager of Hesitancy". This publication has, as crowning jewels, artwork by Walter Bachinski (Shanty Bay Press): a six-colour frontispiece for both stories in pochoir and an additional twelve illustrations printed in a variety of colours throughout. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter gold cloth with black printed paper over boards, painted endpapers of lime and gold, the two frontispieces coloured via pochoir by Bachinsky, the additional illustrations in various colours on each page; Weiss and American Uncial types, printed with a handpress on dampened Barcham Green Canterbury paper, octavo size, pagination: "Lady", [i-ii] [1-2] 3-10 [1, colophon]; "Discourager", [i-ii] [1-2] 3-9 (note: pp. 5 and 7 were mis-bound, so the reader shall need to flip back and forth at this point) [1, blank] [1, colophon, signed here by Walter Bachinski], this no. 10 of only 30 copies. Housed in the publisher's slipcase of stury cardboard covered with matching black paper, gold paper spine label with both titles printed in black. ___CONDITION: Fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; we acquired this directly from the publisher, it is as new, as is the slipcase. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Paris: Chez Le Fuel (Firmin Didot), 1816. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. 12mo. 19th century full green calf gilt (corners bumped), spine lovely in five compartments, with gilt rose design in one of the compartments. A.E.G. An early 19th-century play-book of the French vaudeville theatre, illustrated with an additional engraved hand-colored title page and 12 hand-colored aquatints. The Théâtre du Vaudeville opened in Paris in 1792 on rue de Chartres-Saint-Honoré. “Before Napoleon came to power, vaudevilles were frequently based on social issues, class questions and political concerns, causing not a few disputes with the various parties in power since the founding of the theatre. After about 1804, however, the genre turned away from political and social concerns” (Marvin Carlson, 48). Napoleon was at first “discontented with his theatre due to anti-Republican allusions which he made every evening” (de Lanzac de Laborie, 152), but later embraced it, famously commanding a performance in 1805 for officers who were assembling an invasion force against England. The book contains 18, exceptionally brief, one and two-act vaudevilles, adorned with with 12 delightful plates, each delicately hand-colored. Engraved calendar bound in at the rear. Corners bumped, but a truly lovely copy overall.

Description
Np. No binding. Near Fine. Np, [ca. 1964-1985]. Set of five (5) vintage original 10 x 8" (25 x 20 cm.) black-and-white photos. One with ink printing notations in blank margin and Brian Blauser photographer stamp and 1985 date on verso; one with David Gahr photo credit printed in lower right blank margin; one with holograph printing notations on verso along with note "Ornette Coleman at Five Spot"; two with photo agency sticker on verso. Overall near fine or better. Ornette Coleman (March 9, 1930 – June 11, 2015) was an American jazz saxophonist, trumpeter, violinist, and composer. He was best known as a principal founder of the free jazz genre, a term derived from his 1960 album Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. His pioneering works often abandoned the harmony-based composition, tonality, chord changes, and fixed rhythm found in earlier jazz idioms. Instead, Coleman emphasized an experimental approach to improvisation, rooted in ensemble playing and blues phrasing. AllMusic called him "one of the most beloved and polarizing figures in jazz history," noting that while "now celebrated as a fearless innovator and a genius, he was initially regarded by peers and critics as rebellious, disruptive, and even a fraud." Description
Minneapolis, MN: United States Gypsum Company, 1930. First Edition. Near fine. Stationary, n. d. (ca 1930); 11 x 8 1/2; single sheet, unused; large illustration and diagram to upper half of recto; slight age-toning to margins, else very minor wear; in very good to near fine condition. An unusual advertising piece, it highlighted one of the United States Gypsum Company's proprietary services and modes of distribution. At the end of the 19th century, with gypsum (soft sulfate mineral, widely used as the main constituent in many forms of plaster, drywall, etc.) plentiful, cheap, and easy to employ - many companies jumped on the bandwagon of manufacturing it, resulting in consistently plummeting prices. In 1901, as a result, 30 gypsum and plaster businesses joined together to form the United States Gypsum Company (USG). Through calculated product diversification and diffusion of manufacturing facilities it would be one of few businesses to operate profitably every year during the Great Depression. The current stationary advertised the USG mixed car service - a method of delivering a variety of products with minimum freight charges by using a specific order of loading them in a single railroad car. The detailed diagram illustrated the sequence of arranging sheetrock, rocklath, Red Top Patching Plaster, cement, Plastint Colored Finish, etc.to be transported in a safe and efficient way.
