Its charter was granted in 1638 - to serve as a volunteer institution for training officers enrolled in militia companies across the state. The current invitation was issued on the occasion of the centennial of the birth of Daniel Webster, to be celebrated at the Commander's Quarters in Marshfield, and addressed to Hon. Charles Francis Choate (1828 - 1911), one of the best-known and most-successful Boston lawyers of the time, President of the Old Colony Railroad Company, President of the Massachusetts Hospital Life Insurance Company, and Vice-President of the New England Trust Company.

No publishing date, but the Sunday School Statistics are dated June 1869 from the Sabbath School Teachers' Convention and the Statistics of Maine are from the year 1860. Statistics and advertisements by county and town give a glimpse of the state's business climate post-Civil War.
