Description
New York: Random House, 1939. First Edition. Fine, tight and square (endpapers toned as usual from the glue used for the pastedown endpapers) in a dustjacket with a 1/4" tear and a 1/8" tear at the top of the spine, and some small rubs, else near fine, particularly bright, and unusually fresh. West's biting satire of Hollywood arrived at the critical cultural moment a decade into the sound film era when cinema had fully consolidated its position as the dominant form of twentieth-century mass entertainment and artistic expression. Published, months before the outbreak of World War 2, as the nation still grappled with Depression-era economic devastation, the book systematically exposed the commodification of dreams and the spiritual bankruptcy underlying America's most powerful cultural industry. West employed Juvenalian satire and grotesque imagery to dismantle the hopeful narratives of modern American culture as frauds. Unlike modernist writers who positioned themselves in opposition to mass culture, West integrated popular entertainment directly into his literary fabric. He interrogated the unattainable fantasies nurtured by Hollywood while simultaneously examining the violent desperation of marginalized figures who came to California seeking redemption only to discover the American Dream's fundamental elusiveness. Drawing from his own experience as a screenwriter working on B-movies and observing the industry from a Hollywood Boulevard hotel, West crafted what many critics consider the most penetrating fictional analysis of how cinema's machinery of illusion warps human consciousness and social relations. The novel established a critical framework for understanding entertainment media's psychological and ideological power that remains deeply relevant to our contemporary media-saturated culture.

1797. First Edition. HUME, David. Commentaries on the Law of Scotland Respecting the Description and Punishment of Crimes. Two Volumes. WITH: Commentaries on the Laws of Scotland Respecting Trial For Crimes. Two volumes. WITH: Supplemental Notes to Mr. Hume's Commentaries on the Law of Scotland Respecting Crimes. Edinburgh: Printed for Bell and Bradfute [and for E. Balfour for first two works], 1797, 1800, 1814. Five volumes altogether. Large quarto, contemporary full brown calf, raised bands, red and black morocco spine labels. $6500.First edition of Baron Hume’s groundbreaking authoritative Commentaries on the Description and Punishment of Crimes, the “standard work on Scottish criminal law” (DNB), together with first edition of his two-volume Commentaries on Trial for Crimes, and exceedingly scarce first edition of his Supplemental Notes. Rarely found together, a seminal five-volume work by the nephew of philosopher David Hume, laying “the foundations of our modern criminal law,"" uniformly bound in contemporary calf.""A landmark event in Scottish legal history occurred in 1797 when Baron David Hume… published his Commentaries on the Law of Scotland Respecting the Description and Punishment of Crimes"" (Hewitt, Symbolic Interactions, 1). A revered Professor of Scots Law at University of Edinburgh, with achievements that include his appointment as Baron of the Scots Exchequer in 1822, Baron Hume was ""influenced by the views of his uncle, David Hume, the philosopher, with whom he had a close friendship. The elder had supervised his education"" (Criminal Law, 47n). Baron Hume ""laid the foundations of our modern criminal law"" (British Justice, Hamlyn Lectures). This rare complete five-volume set of Commentaries, including the rarely found Supplemental Notes, provides ""the classic statement of Scottish criminal law"" (Kilday, Women and Violent Crime, 32). With this groundbreaking ""standard work on Scottish criminal law"" (DNB), Baron Hume ""carried the torch into all the recesses of actual practice. He not only made himself familiar with all the scattered matter that had been published, though much of it lay hid in places not commonly explored; but he was the very first who went systematically to the records"" (Edinburgh Review 83:197). To Sir Walter Scott, Baron Hume was ""an architect … to the law of Scotland' (Scott on Himself, 42). Hume's lectures at the University of Edinburgh provided the basis of these works. To his contemporaries the Commentaries and Hume's authoritative research into ""the rise and progress of this law… will ever be held to communicate the most philosophical views of the criminal law in a popular and perspicuous manner"" (Edinburgh Law Journal, I:485). Hume importantly highlights, as well, ""the differences between Scottish and English laws, shaping the former into a symbol of cultural and national identity… for England's 'bloody code' of hundreds of offenses punishable by death did not extend to Scotland. The differences were celebrated in Hume's Commentaries"" (Hewitt, 52, 44). ""The first study of judicial decisions"" in Scottish criminal law, Commentaries has been officially ""afforded 'authoritative' status"" (Gibb & Duff,Criminal Justice Systems, 7). Hume particularly focused on common law. Like ""Blackstone and Bentham in England, Kames and Hume in Scotland were intensely engaged by the question of whether and how the common-law system of maintaining continuity through precedent, and of accommodating change through reinterpretation, could meet the demands of 18th- and early 19th-century Britain… As Farmer explains, 'The belief that the law matured in the late 18th century, taking the form of liberal and flexible principles [was] set out clearly for the first time by Hume. Hume affirms the sense that the past had been leading more progressively to a more enlightened present… A lasting result of Hume's book and its outlook…. strongly implies the autonomy of criminal law from the rest of culture"" (Bardsley, Belief and Beyond, 235-239). ""Indeed Hume still has high status in Scottish legal history. According to Walker…. 'his examination, based on primary sources [is] invaluable"" (Bardsley, Yale Journal of Law & the Humanities, V14 (2002):238-9, 20-21n). Commentaries (1797) with title page imprints, ""Edinburgh: Printed for Bell & Bradfute, Booksellers to the Faculty of Advocates; And for E. Balfour."" ""Another issue of this work appeared in 1797 with the imprint: Edinburgh: printed for Bell & Bradfute; and E. Balfour"" (ESTC T98602): no priority established. Harvard Law Catalogue I:967. Marvin, 405. Edinburgh Review 139:267. ESTC T98600; T98602; T98601. See NYU Catalogue, 251. Interior fresh and clean, only light edge-wear, minor rubbing to spine labels of boards. A near-fine set, rarely found complete and uniformly bound in contemporary calf.

Description
1889. Ford, H. J.. [the first Fairy Book] With Numerous Illustrations by H.J. Ford and G.P. Jacomb Hood. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1889. 16 pp ads dated August 1889. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in gilt, all page edges gilt. First Edition of the first of the twelve "fairy books" put together by Andrew Lang (and in no small part by his wife Leonora). After BLUE came RED, GREEN, YELLOW, PINK, GREY, VIOLET, CRIMSON, BROWN, ORANGE, OLIVE and (in 1910) LILAC -- each volume in cloth of its own color. Lang had long been interested in fantasy in general and in folk and fairy tales in particular -- the result of his upbringing in the Scottish border area. When he began this series, he was going against educators' opinions, who felt that the escapism and violence in such tales would be harmful to young readers; there were very few earlier English collections of fairy tales, but many others followed this series. It is important to note that many fairy tales came from foreign languages, and had to be translated for the FAIRY BOOKs -- constituting the first appearance in the English language for many of them, and exposing many British children to foreign writing for the first time. Since this was the first fairy book, and it was unknown how many there would be (in the Preface to GREEN, Lang predicted that that would be the third and last), a rather tentative edition of 5,000 copies was produced -- vs. as many as 15,000 for some of the others. Also, for the first book Lang selected the most popular fairy tales -- with the result that of the twelve volumes, THE BLUE FAIRY BOOK has the cream of the fairy tale crop -- including "Little Red Riding-Hood," "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood," "Cinderella, or the Little Glass Slipper," "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp," "Rumpelstiltzkin," "Beauty and the Beast," "The Story of Pretty Goldilocks," "Hansel and Grettel," "Snow-White and Rose-Red," and "The History of Jack the Giant-Killer." Included are eight plates plus numerous illustrations within the text. This copy is in very good-plus condition (minor soil on the rear cover, two gatherings standing slightly proud, a few leaves with minor soil); the cover gilt, while less than brilliant, remains rather bright. In all, a highly-collectible copy of the most sought-after (and most elusive) Fairy Book. Provenance: armorial bookplate of Cecil George Assheton Drummond (1839-1903) of Enderby Hall, Leicester.

12 mo, publishers cloth back lettered boards, 108 pp. Lacking frontispiece and endpapers, and somewhat worn at extremities. Hinges starting, and a couple of chips to paper on back cover. Normal aging, very good overall. This narrative was preceded by another version dictated by Williams in 1837. This edition was written by John Greenleaf Whittier from conversations he had with Williams, whom he met through John W. Hill, a noted abolitionist, whose home was a haven for runaway slaves. Williams, a cotton driver on a plantation in Alabama, was born in 1805 on the plantation of George Larrimore in Virginia. He appears to be a grandson of a slave that was taken from Africa. A good portion of the narrative gives details of his spur of the moment escape to avoid a whipping. He arrived in New York on January 1, 1838, but because two white men were hunting him, he ended up on a ship to England.

Description
Quarto, approximately 694 pages, bound in half black leather, and cloth covered boards, spine badly chipped, portions of back-strip missing, corners and tips worn, covers rubbed and scuffed, letters dated 4 February 1878 to 5 March 1884.The volume is a letter copy book, the copies are on thin tissue like paper, and according to the index contains copies of at least 213 letters, and written to at least 112 individuals, businesses, or local and state government officials. The letters deal primarily with the lumber business and the real estate investments of Wilcox. The earliest lumbering in Michigan was done by the French in order to build forts, fur-trading, posts and missions. The British, and later the Americans, used Michigan's hardwoods to build merchant and war ships. Beginning about 1855, white pine became the most desired tree species by the lumber industry of the Great Lakes states. Navigable rivers and extensive pine forests formed the basis of a flourishing pine lumber industry in Michigan's Lower Peninsula until 1895, and about 10 years longer in the Upper Peninsula. Pine logging in the Lake States was essentially completed by 1900, following which the lumbering of hemlock and hardwood species began to gain in importance. At the time of this Letter Copy Book (1878-1884), Michigan was producing more lumber then the next three states combined. However, between 1870 and 1890, most of the useable pine timber in Lower Michigan had been cut. Wilcox corresponds with various individuals concerning offers of land contracts, on the amount of merchantable saw timber standing on the lands, offers lumber contracts, etc., to various lumbermen, lumber jobbers, etc. He writes to the various appropriate government agents such as deed recorders, cashiers for taxes, the county and local auditors, etc. The largest recipients of the letters are: S.S. See, West Branch, MI (25), who was in the lumber business; Register of Deeds, Lexington, Michigan (17), helping to get deeds recorded and released; George Williams (14); Auditor General of Michigan (13); R. J. Briscoe, Flint, Michigan (11), partner in Briscoe & Lockwood; Pipa & Thompson (9); Briscoe & Lockwood (8), a lumber concern in Flint; and Charles Holman (8). Overall, an interesting look at the lumber lands real estate business in Michigan. Most of the individuals that Wilcox corresponds with are located in Michigan, in the towns of Detroit, Flint, Lapeer, Lansing, Lexington, and West Branch. Wilcox also writes to family and other individuals back home in Connecticut, or Massachusetts, Georgia, and elsewhere. There is one letter laid in, 1 page, dated 24 January 1882, written by R. J. Briscoe, a lumber and salt merchant, to Geo. A. Wilcox. The letter is written on Briscoe's letterhead. George A. Wilcox (1830-1928) George A. Wilcox was a very wealthy and prominent business and real estate investor from Madison, Connecticut who owned several businesses and properties across the United States. He was born on 20 September 1830, at Madison, the son of Col. Jonathan Samuel Wilcox (1791-1875) and Chloe Hand (1791-1875) of Madison. George was the next to the last of nine children born to Chloe between the years 1816 and 1833. He prepared for college at Lee's Academy in Madison, Connecticut, and graduated Yale College, Class of 1852, with Phi Beta Kappa honors. There were at least 17 members of the extended Wilcox family who graduated from Yale going back to Jonathan Todd in 1732 and up to Edward A. Fellowes in 1918. The Wilcox family traces their lineage back to John Wilcox and Christopher Todd, founders of Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut. Following a year of travel in Europe after he graduated Yale, he studied law in Detroit, Michigan, and after completion was admitted to the bar. He practiced law in Georgia for 2 years, presumably going there because his brother Daniel Hand Wilcox, a merchant, was located there. Georgia was the home of Daniel's wife, Frances Louisa Ansley. After 2 years in Georgia, he gave up the South and went to Detroit, Michigan for the rest of his career. Wilcox was very involved in real estate and had a great deal of holdings. He was also involved in the lumber industry selling lumber off of his properties. Mr. Wilcox also wrote poetry which he referred to as "Law Office Lyrics." In 1880, he is shown living with his sister Catherine and her husband John W. Nash, at Madison, Connecticut. He was listed as single and his occupation as "broker." Wilcox married in 1894, marrying a woman named Mary Grenelle, who was 38 years younger than he was. He was 64, his wife about 26. They had at least one child together, Constance, born in 1895. His daughter, Constance was an accomplished author and Princess by marriage to Prince Guido Pignatelli di Montecalva in 1925. Wilcox died at Madison, Connecticut, on 22 September 1928 and was buried in his parents' family plot at West Cemetery in Madison. When he was 90 years old, he took a trip to Cuba with his second wife, who was 38 years younger than he. Three months before he died, when he was 98 years old, he took a trip to Europe with his daughter.

Description
No Binding. Very Good. folio, two pages, in very good, clean and legible condition, accompanied by original mailing envelope. Dear Friend Shaw, Here I am, rusticating a short distance from Baltimore, enjoying myself lustily, and intending to do so while I may remain. I find the cause progressing finely here, although it is in the very hot bed of Catholicism (Roman) as you can scarcely turn without overturning a Jesuit, or setting your foot upon their property. The Irish here are as "green" as you find them everywhere else. I heard a tale the other day about one, whether it be true or not, is left for you and me to determine. An Irishman having started on a gunning excursion came to a tree, and seeing what he imagined to be a bird, fired, afterward on going to look for his game, found a little tree frog at the root, and picking it up said "och, fother - el - dol! What a beautiful bird ye were, before I shot the fithers off ye entirely." But for a fact an Irishman just over coming to my Uncle to get work, in conversation said they raised corn in Ireland to a very great extent, and that he understood how to cultivate it, on turning round and seeing a field of fine corn growing near the house enquired in good faith, and seriously asked "sure Misther is thim beans ye are growing there" . On Monday I start for Washington, where if I should stay more than a day you may hear from me from there, if not then not. . Write me if possible so that I may get it before Monday. Mail me if you please a copy of the Aug. number of the "Friend" & I will try and oblige you some time in the way of papers &c. if you have anything that you think will interest the cause here, and I can be the means of forwarding the interest I shall be pleased to receive & make such use of. If I can attend to anything for you I am willing ." The "cause" to which Mitchell refers was apparently that of the newly-renamed American Party, formerly called the "Know Nothings," an anti-Catholic (as well as anti-slavery) movement which sometimes led to violent confrontation; just days after this letter was written, in Louisville, Kentucky, 22 people died in an anti-Catholic riot during a hotly contested race for Governor.

Description
(OCCUPIED JAPAN). ALS. 4 pages. 8 x 10 . Osaka, Japan, October 8, 1945. An autograph letter signed Van to Jane describing the misery on the ground in Japan right after the end of the Second World War. Van is writing Amidst a large crowd of Jap. civilians who have been begging me for some food, candy or cigarettes. He later writes that Japan so far has been nothing but misery and disease to me, along with big towns or small villages in complete ruins. So the people are living in the streets, under buildings, bridges, sleep under wrecked cars, busses, trolleys, etc. Every day thousands of small kids approach you their little hands stretched out in the hope that youll give them a piece of candy. Women unable to feed their babies, come up to you, with the little child sucking away on their breast, but not getting any milk at all. They beg for milk on their knees. Other women offer their gold wedding rings for a couple of C ration crackers. Disease is all over. Children with sores as big as a silver dollar all over their skinny bodies by the dozens. How the heck can you possibly refuse to give them a negative answer. This afternoon I actually couldnt walk, because I was surrounded by women who kneeled down in front of me begging for food. I finally had to show them that they had no reason to be afraid of me, so I bent over, and put my hand underneath the chin of a young women, who was quite pretty. I lifted up her head and lookedThe people here have no food at all, except for a few potatoes that they manage to grow in the streets or among the ruined buildings. They all carry huge sums of money, in the hope that some G.I. will sell them a can of C-rations or a K-ration, which they will pay for with as much as 500 yen ($30.00) of course it is strictly {sic} forbidden. But some guys get away with it and are making a fortune at the present. After a few concluding thoughts and sending Loads of Love, Van writes a postscript saying he expects to be home by Easter. Pages are numbered at the top. The collection is missing the third and fourth pages and contains a noticeable horizontal crease across the middle of the pages but is in otherwise very good condition.
