Description
Göttingen: Heinrich Dieterich, 1805. FIRST EDITION. Complete with half-title, engraved title depicting a bust of Democritus and 8 engraved plates; Original boards, an excellent copy with the large bookplate of H.A. and a contemporary signature on title. First edition of this monumental work in the history of comparative anatomy and human development. Blumenbach believed that an organism’s morphology was capable of being modified by the environment and that the resultant changes were inherited. He argued that zoological classification should be based on structures associated with an animal’s specific functions; it was in this way that he came to make such ground-breaking contributions to comparative primate anatomy. Of special note are the numerous bibliographical references given as footnotes to the text. Blumenbach (1752-1840), physiologist and anthropologist, is widely accepted as one of the founders of scientific anthropology. Probably the most far reaching of all his contributions were his classifications of the human race. He was one of the few during his time to stress the equality of the people that made up each of these variations, regardless of differences.

Description
Boston: Leonard C[rocker] Bowles, 1830 Apparent first edition. A companion volume (No. II) was published in the same year. Publisher's printed paper wrappers. . 5.5 x 3.5." . Engraved frontispiece. Rear wrapper is printed with publisher's ads. Covers lightly rubbed and soiled with a few small tears and creases. Slight foxing and intermittent minor soiling, short closed 1" tear to title-page, touching text on verso, but not affecting legibility. Contemporary presentation inscription to a young woman from her grandmother on front flyleaf, faint ink library stamp on inner front wrapper. A very good copy of a fragile book. We were unable to find any information about the author of the present work, including his or her name. Footsteps to Natural History is a intended for young readers, especially girls. It consists of a dialogue between the characters Mrs. Musgrave and her young daughter Ann. The former asks her child to define natural history, which Ann describes as "...an account of nature; that is, of the works of God, of the things which he has made, whether they are animals or plants or only stones and metals" (p. 10). They proceed to discuss insects and their habitats (the Coccus Ficus or the Coccus Lacca, aphids, Lion Ants, dragonflies, etc.).

Description
Philadelphia: M. Carey, 1815. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. This edition was published just two months after the first. Carey describes it as amplified, methodised and improved over the first edition. The book appeared during a "convulsed period of history" as an effort to create unity between the two American parties against the British during the War of 1812. Bound in original paper boards, badly browned and faded, with spine missing. Front and rear boards loose but holding. Some signatures are cracked but the text block is holding firm. Pages are browned and foxed throughout but legible and readable. Dampstaining to rear end pages. A decent copy of this important historical work. 336 pages. AMHIST/033010.
