Description
London: Henry Lintot and John Osborn, 1745. Hardcover. Fine. Folio. An extract of pp. 743-755 of Vol. IV of the third edition of Churchill's Voyages. Also included are pp. 756-776: 'A Journey of John Baptist Merin To the Mines of Hungary' and 'An Account of the Cape of Good Hope' by Wiliam Ten Rhyme. For Pelham, see Cox, 1631. The eight Englishmen were left by mistake in Greenland in 1630; by careful preparation, they pulled through. This was the first time an Artic winter was successfully braved on the shores of the Spitzbergen. Pelham's account of the feat attracted great attention. It was also reprinted in the Hakluyt Society volume for 1902. Bound to style in quarter leather, red leather lettering piece, gilt; marbled paper boards. Light marginal damp stain not affecting the text, else a fine copy; without the map mentioned on the title page.

Description
Iowa City: The Stone Wall Press, 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. One of 220 copies, large octavo size, 63 pp., with postcard announcement from the Press. Philip Levine (1928-2015), poet, and teacher, born in working-class Detroit, would go on to be the Poet Laureate of the United States for 2011-2012, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1995 and the National Book Award for Poetry in 1980 - among many other awards. While his poetry was often gritty and full of despair, the critics have also found echoes of joy. From the web site of the Poetry Foundation: "Though Levine’s poems are full of loss, regret and inadequacy...they also embody the triumphant potential of language and song." This work, "On The Edge", was his first published book, the printing done by Kim Merker under the imprint of The Stone Wall Press, at the University of Iowa, where Levine was briefly a student. Included are the poems "May Day in March", "Night Thoughts over a Sick Child", "The Drunkard", "Green Thumb", "Lights I Have Seen Before", "For Fran", "In a Vacant House", "Passing Out", "An Abandoned Factory, Detroit", "Premonition at Twilight", "Berenda Slough", "The Turning", "Sierra Kid", "Small Game", "My Poets", "L'Homme et la Bête", "The Negatives", "On the Edge", "Gangrene", "The Horse", and "The Distant Winter". ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in brown Fabriano paper over boards, cream paper spine label with black lettering; Romanee type on Golden Hind paper, large octavo size (9 5/8" by 5 1/2"), pagination: [1-8] 9-62 [1, colophon], limited edition of 220 copies, this no. 62. Postcard announcement with hand-written address on the front (presumably the original owner), information on the book on the back, measures 5 1/2" wide by 3 14" tall. ___CONDITION: Volume a bit better than very good: the binding very good and the interior fine; straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the binding with sunning and a few spots of soil, the fore-edge of the back board with wear, one light spot of soil on the front pastedown. The postcard announcement near fine, free of noticeable wear, lightly toned and with some soil on the back, note that it was been postmarked. ___CITATION: Berger, "Printing & the Mind of Merker", no. 12. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
