Description
London, 1754. Three titles bound together in a full calf binding. The front hinge cracked but is still attached. Front free endpaper lacking. Foxed throughout. Three pamphlets describing the abduction and imprisonment of Elizabeth Canning (1734-73), a young resident of London. The case still is argued by scholars today. Canning escaped her captors and arrived home after nearly a month and was emaciated. Eventually, several people were tried, but cracks appeared in the case, and Canning was ultimately convicted of fabricating her kidnaping and was transported to Wethersfield, Connecticut to serve a term of indenture. She married and had several children and died in 1773.

Description
1888. Rowan County Board of Education, teacher pay vouchers, 1888 and 1892, documenting African American education within the segregated public school system of post-Reconstruction North Carolina. The vouchers record segregated public education and its funding mechanisms through payments to Black teachers approved at the county level. These documents show how African American educators were paid through formally structured systems requiring countersignature by the county superintendent and approval by district committee members. Two manuscript teacher salary vouchers, each approximately 8.5 x 7 inches and written on both sides. The first, dated March 26, 1888, authorizes payment of $30.00 to Maggie Locke for teaching in "School District No. 4, Rowan County, for Colored Race," covering the period from January 3 to March 2, 1888, in Atwell Township. The printed form specifies that payment is contingent upon countersignature by the county superintendent and approval by at least two district committee members, establishing formal oversight procedures. The verso bears Locke's signed receipt dated March 27, 1888, acknowledging payment from county treasurer J. M. McCubbins. The second voucher, dated January 16, 1892, records payment of $25.00 to Isaac Kerns for teaching in "School District No. 2, Salisbury & No. 2 Prov., Rowan County, for Col[ored] Race," with similar requirements for administrative approval prior to disbursement. The verso includes Kerns's signed acknowledgment of payment. Both documents explicitly designate the schools as serving the "Colored Race," indicating the formalized racial segregation embedded within the educational system. These vouchers document the operation of segregated schooling in the decades following the Civil War, when African American education expanded under conditions of systemic underfunding and institutional control. The requirement for multiple authorizations before payment records the bureaucratic regulation of Black teachers' labor, while the recorded wages provide quantitative evidence for comparative study of compensation disparities. Produced during a period when access to education for African Americans remained contested, these documents contribute to research on Reconstruction-era legacies, Jim Crow governance, and the role of Black educators in sustaining community institutions. Light wear, minor creasing, and typical manuscript handling marks; overall very good condition. Documentary record of the administrative structure and lived realities of segregated education in the late nineteenth-century South.

Description
1972. [Chicano Poetry] [Chicano Literature] El Grito: A Journal of Contemporary Mexican-American Thought, Vol. V, No. 3. Eds., Octavio Romano-V and Hermino Rios. Berkeley, CA: Quinto Sol Publications, 1972. Softcover journal volume with illustrated cover. Text in English and Spanish. 84 pages. El Grito: A Journal of Contemporary Mexican-American Thought was published to highlight scholarship and creative work by Mexican Americans from the United States between 1967 and 1974. It was published by Quinto Sol, the first fully independent publishing house to surface from the Chicano movement in the 1960s. The name "Quinto Sol" is Spanish for "Fifth Sun" and it refers to the Aztec myth of creation and destruction. El Grito first began in 1967 and was the first national academic Chicano literary journal ever published in the U.S. The journal, whose name is Spanish for "the Shout," was "intended to raise awareness at what we could call a pan-Chicano/a nationalistic level". Considered an intellectual and independent critical space, it became a place where Chicano(a) scholars, authors and artists could work to debunk the "culture of poverty" and other negative stereotypes attributed to Mexican Americans by scientists, other literature works and the media. As the editorial developed, the journal was used to expand Chicano expression and self-definition. Volume in very good condition.

Description
Chicago: Oscar Leistner, 1904. Original paper covered box and label; as issued.. Very good; a stain to the cover title of the pamphlet (does NOT penetrate beyond the cover).. Small rectangular paper covered box (5.5 x 4.25 x 1.75 inches) with paper label that contains 3 cylindrical rubber graining rolls (meas. appx. 5 inches x 1.5 inches in diameter); a publication - intended for inclusion - The Up-To-Date Grainer (providing instructions in the use of the rolls); a laid-in printed slip advertising the product. Davis began manufacturing graining tools some time around 1895. Leistner took over the firm at the turn of the century. The "improvements" introduced by Leistner consisted of providing a third graining pattern tool in the kit. When issued the rubber cylinders were flexible, providing the opportunity for the skilled practitioner to produce a variety of effects with one pattern. The quarter round "rocker" was also produced by the Davis Company but was not offered as a part of the set - it was a separate purchase. At one point the kits were marketed by Sears Roebuck. An uncommon survival.
