Description
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1923. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy in a Very Good+ dust jacket. A tight, square copy with bright gilt to spine. Dust jacket with minor rubbing and wear at the spine ends and one small chip from the lower spine fold. Front flap fold splitting at the lower edge (about 2.5"), but generally an attractive example, and unrestored. Fitzgerald's only play, a satire on the American Presidency. "A resounding theatrical flop [that was] published by Scribeners on 27 April, 1923 in a print run of 7,650 copies retailing at $1.50, it opened for a week's trial on 19 November 1923 at Nixon's Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City...The first night was a debacle, with, as Zelda Fitzgerald put it in a letter, 'people so obviously bored' and some audience members walking out during the second act" (Tredell, Bruccoli). There is now conjecture that The Vegetable's problems stemmed from Fitzgerald's desire to focus on another project at hand: the development of The Great Gatsby. "He had begun to plan the novel in June, 1923, saying to Maxwell Perkins 'I want to write something new - something extraordinary and beautiful'...But that summer and fall was devoted to the production of The Vegetable" (Mizener). Rare on the market due to its limited print run, The Vegetable is a testament to the diversity of Fitzgerald's literary career; and though his only attempt on the stage was not the soaring success he'd hoped for, Fitzgerald would ultimately find fame in Hollywood with his works capturing the imagination of Golden Age directors and actors. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Description
London: Saunders and Otley, 1829. SECOND EDITION. Full contemporary calf, boards outlined in gilt, title and year in gilt on spine, paste-downs, fly-leaves and edges marbled. An absolutely exquisite, wide-margined copy. Second edition, apparently preceded by an 1825 printing from Calcutta, India. A fascinating, crazy story bordering science fiction and fact. Cranioscopy (literally skull observation) was coined by the German physician Franz Gall who pioneered the study of localized brain functions. It was replaced by the term phrenology coined in 1805 by an American physician to mean “science of the mind.” In this wonderful story, the narrator makes a fantastic balloon journey from London and awakes in an inverted country, where the citizens wear necklaces of skulls and have their own skulls mapped out with phrenological markings. The traveler learns that the country is called Phrenologasto, as a culture defined by phrenology, and that its capital (head) city is called Cranioscoposco, echoing Gall’s original title for his science. The inhabitants of Phrenologasto carry animated charts of their own faculties. As they are Italians long severed from their native land, Travels may be deemed a Lost Race tale. The end of the nineteenth century saw considerable discussion regarding connections between phrenological development and predisposition to criminal behavior. Books by Cesar Lombroso and others point out the anatomical and other evidence of prisoners to support their position that shape of the head and other facial features can lead first to tattoos and then to a life of crime. Balscopo is the pseudonym of John Trotter (1788-1852). Despite not being specifically identified, he is (ostensibly) the translator of the manuscript which was originally written in Italian. In the preface to Travels, he claims to have been given Balscopo’s manuscript in Bavaria.

Description
1920. No Shooting on These Premises," issued 1920 in Phoenix, Arizona documents local efforts to regulate firearm use during the early years of Arizona statehood as urban growth and shifting legal environments reshaped public space. Following Arizona's 1910 constitutional recognition of the right to bear arms, rapidly expanding cities such as Phoenix confronted the need to balance that right with emerging concerns over public safety, particularly as population density increased. The broadside provides evidence of localized, property-based restrictions on firearms in a period marked by tensions between frontier traditions and modern urban governance. It supports research into the history of gun regulation, municipal authority, and the transformation of the American West in the early twentieth century. "No Shooting on These Premises." G.G. Morgan Printing Co. Phoenix, Arizona, 1920. Original broadside printed on linen cloth, measuring approximately 12" x 8¾". The text presents a direct prohibition on firearm discharge within a defined property space, designed for public display. The format and material indicate durability for repeated or outdoor use, consistent with signage intended for enforcement or deterrence. The production reflects commercial printing practices in Phoenix during a period of rapid civic and infrastructural development. Issued at a time when Phoenix expanded significantly in geographic and population scale, the broadside aligns with broader national developments of the 1920s, including the introduction of Prohibition in the United States, which contributed to increased concerns about public order, illicit activity, and violence. As urban centers in the American West transitioned away from frontier conditions, signage such as this demonstrates how property owners and local authorities asserted control over behavior within increasingly regulated environments. Light soiling and minor fraying at edges; overall in very good condition.

Description
1946. University of Hawaiʻi; Iolani School. Ka Palapala; Prize Day Program. 1946-1948. These materials document postwar educational and social life in Hawaiʻi following the end of wartime martial law, with particular attention to Japanese American students navigating the transition from military governance to civilian institutional life. The items capture how public visibility, ceremony, and academic recognition operated in the immediate aftermath of World War II, when Japanese Americans in Hawaiʻi emerged from a period of surveillance, curfews, and restricted civil liberties distinct from mainland incarceration policies. The material provides primary-source evidence for the study of Japanese American reintegration, educational institutions, and the reestablishment of civilian social structures in a territory where Asian-descended populations formed a demographic majority but remained within stratified colonial and racial hierarchies. University of Hawaiʻi. Ka Palapala. Honolulu: Associated Students of the University of Hawaiʻi, 1948. Quarto. Iolani School. Prize Day Program. Honolulu, 1946. Two items. [1] University of Hawaiʻi. Ka Palapala. Presents campus life through formal portraits, student organizations, and ceremonial events in the years immediately following the lifting of martial law. Full-page studio portraits identify individuals as "Queen Jessie Honnen," "Queen Ruth Awai," "Queen Pearl Luning," "Queen Mildred Tolentino," "Queen Helen Oshima," and "Queen Helen Noh," many bearing Japanese and other Asian surnames. These images depict women in formal gowns with styled hair, jewelry, and controlled studio lighting, emphasizing ideals of presentation, achievement, and social prominence within the university setting. Additional pages include group photographs, campus scenes, and student activities that document a restored civilian academic environment. [2] Iolani School. Prize Day Program. Single folded sheet announcing a June 5, 1946 ceremony. Printed text outlines order of exercises, awards, and institutional participants, reflecting formal educational rituals and Anglican school traditions. The program records a public academic ceremony held less than one year after the conclusion of the war, indicating the resumption of structured recognition and school governance following wartime disruption. These items were produced during the early postwar period in Hawaiʻi, when martial law-imposed after the attack on Pearl Harbor-had only recently been lifted in 1944, and civilian institutions were reasserting authority by the late 1940s. The prominence of Japanese and other Asian American students in formal roles within the university yearbook indicates a shift in public representation following wartime suspicion, while the Iolani program demonstrates continuity in elite educational ceremony despite recent military control. Together, the materials document how schools functioned as sites of normalization and public recognition during a period of political transition preceding Hawaiʻi's eventual statehood in 1959. Yearbook shows moderate handling wear including scuffing, toning, and edge rubbing with intact spine; interior pages clean and fully legible. Program exhibits minor light staining. Overall very good condition. This grouping provides direct visual and textual evidence of postwar Japanese American student life and institutional continuity in Hawaiʻi.

Publisher's paper-covered boards over green cloth, with gilt illustration to front board, and spine lettered in gilt; lacking dust jacket. Very good book, with spine ends and corners rubbed to boards, and light toning to spine. Overall, a clean copy of Frost's enduring collection of poetry. Crane A10. West-Running Brook is a collection of 39 poems, including "Spring Pools," "A Peck of Gold," "Once the Pacific," "Acquainted with the Night," "Canis Major," "A Passing Glimpse," "The Peaceful Shepherd," "The Flower," and "On Looking Up by Chance at the Constellations," among others. The poems are thematically divided into six sections: "I: Spring Pools," "II: Fiat Nox," "III: West-Running Brook," "IV: Sand Dunes," "V: Over Back," and "VI: My Native Simile." Throughout the text, Frost uses nature as allegory for human interactions and political themes. For example, the titular "West-Running Brook" involves a husband and wife conversing about a brook that runs west instead of east, which Frost uses as a symbol for the importance of contrast to achieve harmony in personal relationships. The text is illustrated with woodcuts by Lankes, and their rough beauty is perfectly paired with Frost's verse.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Robert Carlton Brown (1886 - 1959) was a world traveler, author, editor, bookseller, and publisher. In the early 1900s, he contributed poetry and prose to various periodicals in New York and published two novels. After, he traveled extensively through South America, Europe, and Asia with his wife Rose Brown, also an author, and lived in Rio de Janeiro, where he published a magazine, and in Paris, in the 1930s, where he issued several poetry collections. The family also toured the Soviet Union. On their return to the US, the two wrote various international cookbooks. He ran a bookstore, called Bob Brown's Books, in Greenwich Village in the 1950s. His current book contained various recipes for wines, beers, and cocktails, which in his own words were "high spots in homemade hilarity - the kind that made Great Aunt Agatha dance on the table and kick the lamp over - about the time of the Chicago fire."
