Description
Lima, 1803. Good.. [6],24,[1]pp. Disbound; lacks folding plate. Light tanning and scattered staining, slightly heavier to outer leaves. Small area of loss at head of title page, not affecting text. First of two editions, both issued in 1803. The author, José Hipolito Unanue was the head of the main Franciscan monastery in Lima at this time. Here, he proffers a written description, including measurements and siting details, of the large mausoleum being erected there for the burial of members of the order and of local religious societies. The descriptions is evocative and informative, though this copy lacks the engraving of the structure by Marcello Cabello. Nevertheless, a very scarce work; OCLC locates three copies in U.S. institutions -- Yale, Duke, and the JCB. Medina, Lima 1944. Palau 344285. Sabin 97714. Vargas Ugarte 3186.

Description
[London]: [J.M'Creery], 1816. From the Bart Auerbach Collection. Front cover detached, loss at foot of spine, a few small holes at gutter of title-page. 8vo. 208 pages. Without the portrait, sonnet, and four leaves of "books omitted"; with a leaf at end advertising the auction sales of Roscoe's collection of pictures and prints. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards. Catalogue, mostly priced in ink, of the library of the great Liverpool historian (though best known for his children's classic, 'The Butterfly's Ball', 1807), prepared under his own supervision, after the failure of his family bank. The 1813 lot catalogue is rich in early printed books and Italian literature with many incunabula from the earliest Italian presses as well as the 1459 Psalter and 1460 Catholicon. On the front endpaper, in a later 19th-century hand, is a note regarding the sale ("The books were sold for £5150") and the text of Roscoe's "Sonnet" (on parting with his books). De Ricci, pp. 93-94. (BA).
