Liverpool and London: F. D. Richards; L. D. Saints' Book Depot, 1856. Eleventh Edition, Revised & Enlarged. Leather bound. 415pp. Twenty-fourmo [11.5 cm] Brown leather with decorative gilt tooling. All edges gilt. Gilt turn-ins. The name "Miss Ellen T. Wikoff" is stamped in gilt on the front board. The joints and spine ends have been professionally restored. Tissue repairs to the hinges and the inside margin of p. 415. Pp. 236-37 are darkened from a newspaper clipping having been laid in. Complete. All pages are present. Flake 1769. Chism 72. Crawley: III, 1079. The third major revision of the British hymnal of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A lovely example of this hymnal. In his bibliography, "A Selection of Early Mormon Hymnbooks. 1832-1872. Hymnbooks and Broadsides from the First 40 Years of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," Shane Chism points out that Franklin D. Richards states in the preface to this edition, that the main alteration is the addition of "thirty-six pages of the most appropriate pieces available." This additional hymns occupy pp. 363-98, and include hymns by Eliza R. Snow, Mary Ann Morton, John Jacques, and William Clayton, among others. Also new to this edition, is the names of many of the hymns' authors has been added to the index to first lines. A very attractive early hymnal.
